View Full Version : Post-Nick Colasanto Coach references
How many times was Coach referenced on the series after he passed away (not counting the 200th episode special)? I can only think of three - "Birth, Death, Love and Rice" and "The Last Picture Show" immediately come to mind, but there's also the end of "One For The Road," where Sam straightens out the picture of Geronimo, then heads into the dark hall.
Are there any others?
MaydayMalonesGirl 10-20-2003, 04:08 PM In the episode "Fools and Their Money" Sam says that he was just trying to look out for Woody like Coach had looked out for him, and that was why he didn't place the football bet.
There was one other time when someone had come into the bar and thought that Woody was Coach's son or something  I don't remember which episode that was from, though.
DianeChambers87 10-20-2003, 05:19 PM Sam: I was just trying to look out for you like coach looked out for me...it worked just as well which scares the hell out of me.
in "Thanksgiving Orphans" they toast to Coach
Brian Damage 10-20-2003, 05:25 PM Thanksgiving Orphans was the only one I could think of.

That's "The Last Picture Show" from season eleven.
cheers freak 10-20-2003, 05:54 PM He is mentioned by Sam in "PITCH IT AGAIN, SAM" from Season 9.
barwars 10-20-2003, 08:38 PM One of my only complaints about Cheers is that they just blew off the character of Coach, and Nicholas Calosanto.
Maxamillion 10-21-2003, 03:33 PM Well it is interesting about Coach. I remember reading an article in the back of the New York Times following his death. The article dealt with the fact that Coach was homosexual and the true cause of his death was aids. The report mentioned that he used to run around with Rock Hudson. I couldnt believe this and I could never find anything else on this article. I smelled a coverup. So I investigated further by talking to people at NBC but it seemed that everybody was pretty hush about the true cause of his death. NBC would never really discuss it. They would neither "deny or confrim" the information.
MaydayMalonesGirl 10-21-2003, 03:56 PM Nick Colasanto? Aids? Whoa, I never heard anything like that. I always heard he had died of some kind of heart problem. Wow. But who knows if that's true. I guess we'll never know....
DianeChambers87 10-21-2003, 04:26 PM was he married?
Well you know what..now that I think about it, NONE of the cast members ever say how he died they always say "Nicki was very sick"
Maxamillion 10-21-2003, 04:31 PM Yes there was definately more to his death than meets the eye. Details are pretty shadey. It was the early 80's and this type of stuff was kinda swept under the rug at the time. Nowadays the freaking media would have discovered everything.
DianeChambers87 10-21-2003, 04:51 PM That's true, the first real public celebrity death from aids was that of Queen's front man Freddie Mercury in 1991. He had kept his sickness a secret for several years, and announced it at a press conference in that year. He died a couple of days later, and it was still a shock to the entire world.

Actually, that would probably be Rock Hudson in 1985.

oh yea, that's true
theTHRILL 10-22-2003, 07:55 AM Maxamillion, I thought I remembered reading the same thing about Coach, but since I wasn't sure I was afraid to post it for fear of a backlash. I don't really blame the cast and producers from covering it up though because of people's prejudices back then. It was virtually unheard of for something like that to happen.
Yeah. I've heard the cast talk about how in interviews he was really sick toward the end. Ted even talked about how he wasn't getting much oxygen to the brain those last few months. He didn't look like himself in the last few episodes, so just a heart attack doesn't seem like the whole story. But it doesn't seem like AIDS, either.
OU812 10-23-2003, 10:41 AM If anyone can clarify this about Coach I would really like to know. I tried to find out if he was married but couldn't find anything. His weight loss was pretty drastic from season 2 to season 3. He was round and robust at the start of season 1 and by the end of 3 he was just skin and bones. Which does happen with Aides if not taken care of properly and of course in the 80's there was nothing to slow it down like there is now. Long Live Coach!!!
DianeChambers87 10-23-2003, 04:06 PM Yea! LONG LIVE COACH!!!
Maxamillion 10-30-2003, 11:12 AM Yes I agree------LONG LIVE COACH!!! It is a shame that such a cloud surrounds his death. He was definately a hard one to replace on the cast.
Brian Damage 10-30-2003, 12:03 PM Welcome Maxamillion :welcome:
