Just when you think you've ran the gamut on bad luck for yourself, somethign else happens. Don't EVER think that bad luck runs out. It does not.

Last night I was driving home from a work trip and was heading up over a hill, a very large hill. My car wouldn't change gears and I was trying to just drive at a reasonable safe speed (I was beside a Walmart truck climing this mountainous hill going 30 MPH) so I put my blinkers on. I managed, somehow to get to the top of that hill. I *thought* I was in the clear and I looked in my rearview mirror. The lady that had been following me (she went to work with me that day) was flashing her high beams and blinking her blinkers like mad. I put on my flashers and pulled off the side of the road. She jumped out of the car and screamed 'There are flames coming from your car, get out!". My daughter was asleep in the backseat so I grabbed her out of the car and we went running. I stood there then and watched my car, a Dodge Neon, become completely, and I mean totally, engulfed in flames. If I had stayed in that car for another 30 seconds I would have been killed. :eek: The fire company was there, state police, everything. the fire was HUGE, I couldn't belive it was my car because all you could see was flames and smoke.

They got the fire out, we were safe but I lost a lot of stuff. I spend a lot of time traveling for work and at work so I keep a lot of things in myc ar. My purse with my checkbook, bank cards, Drivers Liscense, etc. My cell phone...I had my video camera in there because I had it at work for the day with me so I lost that as well as my regular still camera. :( Both my daughter and I lost our coat, she lost her school clothes (She wears a uniform to school) and I lost shoes. She had 2 American Girl dolls that weren't salvageable among so many other things. :(

We realize we can replace all of that stuff ( I have to call the Insurance Claims place at 11 a.m.) and that we can't be replaced but it's hard to lose everything like that and that was just my car stuff.

Now I have to find a new car. I just went through this 5 months ago after we were in a car accident. Car shopping is no fun!

WOW! I'm so glad you and your daughter are ok! That really sucks about all the stuff you lost! But agian at least both of you are ok!

Oh my gosh. I am so glad that you and your daughter are safe. That must be terrible to lose all your things, but the important thing is that the person warned you, and your ok. I hope you get everthing settled with the insurance company and everything's back to normal, as quickly as possible. Just wondering, but was the car brand new?

Oh my God, that is seriously FREAKY. I'm just glad you're OK. That's all that really matters.

That is just freaky you should mention this- almost two weeks ago, my mom got into a car accident (it was an one-car accident) where her car rolled over and she was, THANK GOD, wearing her seatbelt. And I am VERY thankful I was not with my mom when the car accident occurred, because she showed me pics of her car and the passenger side was totally mauled. :eek:

I tried to scan in my pictures, but somethign is wrong with my scanner. My computer is all messed up :(

I did manage to get 2 pictures scanned in though before it wigged out on me.

There are a lot more.

The one is of the fire just as it started, this is just about 25 seconds after I got out of the car, my friend snapped it. The car battery exploded right after that.

The other is what I took today at the salvage yard where I went to see what it looked like in the daytime. :( This picture no where near shows the damage inside. I tried to scan in the others to no avail. Will try tomorrow though.

The car is a 1996 and I've had it for 5 months. I have been told by several people to talk to a lawyer because no matter what year the car is THAT is not supposed to happen. :(

No they didn't say and I dont know how they can find out because there is nothing left of the front of the car. When you lift the hood it's all soot inside. The lady behind me said the flames were under the front of the car first and then they shot up over the hood so I dont know what that means.

No more Neons for me. My cousin took me out tonight to look for a car and I found a Jeep Cherokee that I liked. He's going to test drive it tomorrow and take it to his brothers (who owns a shop) and have him check it out.

I also found out that the insurance will cover NOTHING IN THE CAR THAT I LOST. Nothing. Not one thing. I'm very upset about that because between my daughter and I we had a LOT of stuff with us that needs replaced including coats, a video camera and a brand new Cannon camera :(

The place I bought the car basically sold me a lemon so I'm told to take a look into the Lemon Law and see what i can do about it. I dont know. I dont want a big deal, I want a new car and I want my stuff replaced. That's all I want.

I'm so glad we are okay. It could have been very, very bad. Your welcome. I just hope everything works out for you, and that you can get a new car soon, and be able to move on with you life. Maybe you will have enough money to pay the burnt car off, and get something else. Those pictures look awful. That must have been really scarey for you and your little girl.:(

OMG. I would definitly talk to your lawyer!!! You should not be responsible for buying a car that almost killed you and your daughter. If you don't have a lawyer, go to a district attorney at your town court and present the case to them. They don't cost anything and I'm sure they'd be happy to help seeing you and your daughter were almost killed.
Thank God your friend was driving behind you, and that you and your daughter are okay. Someone upstairs must be watching over you honey. I hope everything works out for you in the long run. ;)

Wow...that is so weird. I'd think to blow like that, something had to have sparked a gas line, but who knows.

I don't know if Lemon Laws cover used cars (my aunt just bought a crappy used car too), but it's worth a try. And maybe if lots of Neons have done this, a class action suit could get going.

I hope it wasn't a place called Dan Nelson Finance SuperCenter. My aunt bought a car from them (she has no credit either), and the transmission broke a month later.

I dont know if I'll have time this morning because I have to go to do the insurance stuff, but I am going to talk to a laywer. I dont care about money (well I do but that's nto what I want). I just want my stuff replaced. It's not my fault that happened and I shouldn't have to lose my personal belongings just because.


That one picture, the one with the fire, doesn't even show how bad it was because that was right before it exploded, right after we got out of the car. Before the fire department put it out it was burning, full force, back to the back window.

I'll try and scan more pictures tonight when I come home from work.

Well Nanny at least everyone was ok, which is the most important.

Do you have any home owner's or renter's insurance, as they will sometimes cover items in a car that are stolen/destroyed, which your actual car insurance does not insure against. The last car fire I was involved with was a result of the dealership that did an oil change not replacing the filter on a mercedes which caused a $40,000 care to be burnt completely.

You should very definitely talk to an attorney about your case, and you may have to look around as many attorneys would not be qualified to deal with your problem. Many times a local or state bar association has a referral program if you are not familiar with any attorneys. Lemon laws are usually designed for new cars, but your state may have some coverage.

Also, if this is a known defect in the car, the manufacturer may be willing to cover costs.

As far as I know and could find, there is no known defect in the car. My dad, a 30 year fire fighting veteran, said based on the pictures and how the dashboard was basically melted that the fire looked electrical.

I turned it into the insurance. They WILL NOT COVER my personal belongings in the car (my camcorder, my phone, my camera, my daughters American Girl doll) and I think that SUCKS. As a single parent who barely makes it anyhow that just adds to the stress of all of this.

The insurance company called me at work and I had to make a recorded statment of what happened over the phone.

I got the payoff total of the car and I pray I will get enough to pay it off. Will they base what they give me as a settlement (the insurance company) on what I owe? Like can they say we'll give you 4 grand and they find out I dont owe that...will they only give me what I owe?

Tonight at work was hard because all the people who were there Saturday were finding out what happened adn some of them didn't realize how serious this really was. I'm still having a hard time with it. :(

And I'm stll trying to accept that I have to just lump the personal stuff and take the loss. I don't think I shoudl have to take it as a loss - it's not my fault the car burned :( So I will probably be talking to a lawyer sometime this week to see if I have any recourse with the stupid place that sold the car to me.

I still can't get my scanner working. I swear I will get the rest f these pictures scanned in!

I wanna say they'll give you what the car was worth (book value) before the fire, but don't quote me.

My mom was stunned that the insurance company won't replace the belongings. It's not like it was stolen and it was your fault cos you didn't lock the doors. :rolleyes:

Electrical huh? I wanna say the problem we had with our Neon was electrical...maybe not. I can't remember.

I know :( Nothing about this is my fault and I can't believe the car did this and *I* have to take the loss when it's nothing I could control :(

I dont care about all the other stuff but I need my camcorder replaced because I use it for work and for my daughter and I have to replace my daughters American Girl doll. She's just a little girl, she doesn't understand :(

Geez, as if you didn't have enough to worry about, now this? It does suck, but the important thing (and I know you realize this) is that you and your girls are safe and sound. I'm really sorry all of that happened.. still, I'm happy that all of you made it out of there.

It is sinking in more and more the whole scope of this incident. I'm having a hard time sleeping, I'm not eating much at all. I'm realizing how lucky we are to have made it out alive and how thankful I am for the lady that was behind me.

Her name is Angela.

Take off the "a" and that's what she was that night. I"m here, my daughter is here.

Becuase of her.

I just spoke to the insurance company.

I wont even get enough money to pay off the car from them. They say they are continuing the investigation. What the heck does that mean?

I had hoped to get enough to pay off the car and just enough extra to replace my video camera.

Now I can't do either. I don't know what I'm going to do. :(

I was able to scan in 2 more pictures. I tried to scan in more but again my scanner would not work.

Will try again tomorrow. IN the meantime...

I'm telling you honey, you can go to your district attorney, or they always have lawyers that give first couseltation free. I'm studying right now to be a paralegal for a criminal firm, but I have to learn every law to some extent. How long did you have the car? Also, you said your dad said it was electrical because of how the dash looks. Is there any chance he could be wrong, not that I really think it would matter in your case, but you said that Angela saw from behind the fire started under your car, that could make a big difference.
Get your facts together and make an appointment to meet with a lawyer, I wouldn't wait any longer though. Otherwise they're gonna wonder what you were doing and why you didn't consult with them sooner. Time to get your chin up, kiss your daughter, and TAKE CARE OF BUSINESS!!!!

I planned on contacting a lawyer, I was waiting to hear back from the insurance company first so I will call someone when I get to work tonight.

I have had the car since April. I bought it from a business, a loan business, that had repo'd it from someone else. I have bad credit and they were willing to finance me becaue they wanted the car off their hands. I needed a car and they were the only place willing to give me a chance. They would not even LET ME test drive the car. They said I had to just look at it in the lot beause they did not have a dealer plate for it. Yes I know it was stupid and hindsight is 20/20 so I would not do that again.

Someone has to be repsonsible for this happening. I dont think I'd have much luck against Dodge.

I had nothing but trouble with the car from the day I drove it off their parking lot. The check engine light came on immediately and when I called them he said it was my problem now.

I had it serviced several times trying to get it fixed. I had just hoped ot have it get me through the winter.

Would it be the financial place I'd be seeing the lawyer about?

The flames were coming from right underneath the engine in the front but Angela saw them behind me because I was driving 45 miles an hour and the flames were going out backwards under the car. I never even smelled smoke because until the car stopped it didn't burn upwards. When I stopped the battery exploded and the whole front of the car went up. But while driving the air was pushing the flames out the back.

First off, everything you just told me, write it down and tell them everything you told me, EVERYTHING!!!
All the facts are right there. "They wanted to get the car off their hands". They wouldn't let you test drive it, any lot that has a license to sell cars has to have dealer plates for the specific reason of TEST DRIVING. They told you "the car is your problem now", knowing there was most definitly a problem. Put it this way, they knew exactly what they were doing!!!
Do you have reciepts from the garage you took it to to get it fixed? What were they telling you about it? Was it always the same place? All these questions the lawyer will ask you. The mechanics might have to testify on your behalf. Also Angela would have to testify as a witness to what she saw. Talk to the lawyer first and get the facts. Not a problem, don't get nervous, GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.

Don't call yourself stupid honey. You were doing what you thought you had no choice about at the time. You live and learn from these situations. Now you're just that much smarter. Any used car that you're going to buy from now on, make sure you take it to a mechanic to check it out first. All you have to do is call them to let them know you're buying a car and they usually, at very little or no cost at all, will make sure it's in safe driving condition. By the way, who inspected this car? I'm sure it was the people who sold it to you right? You have to have all this info for the lawyer.
I'm gonna go and look up the lemon law, you have to tell me what State you're in first though. I'm in New York, just so you feel a little more comfortable. You can do this, you just have to get your mean streak out for a little while. Trust me, these bastards that did this to you deserve it. Just think about your daughter and what might have been and get MAD ABOUT IT.

Any used car that you're going to buy from now on, make sure you take it to a mechanic to check it out first. All you have to do is call them to let them know you're buying a car and they usually, at very little or no cost at all, will make sure it's in safe driving condition. By the way, who inspected this car? I'm sure it was the people who sold it to you right? You have to have all this info for the lawyer.
I'm gonna go and look up the lemon law, you have to tell me what State you're in first though. I'm in New York, just so you feel a little more comfortable. You can do this, you just have to get your mean streak out for a little while. Trust me, these bastards that did this to you deserve it. Just think about your daughter and what might have been and get MAD ABOUT IT.

The car wasn't brand new, it was a repo from someone else.

I thought of calling the person who owned the car before me to ask if they had had problems with the car but didn't know if I should.

I dont know who inspected the car, it was inspected when I got it.

The only receipt I ever had from having anything done to it was from September 25th when I went to the Walmart TLE to have the oil changed and all that stuff done. The receipt for that was in the car. My mom workjs for Walmart so she is calling them right now to see i she can get a receipt for it from their computer. My cousins brother in law owns a garage and he always took care of my car for me so there weren't any receipts for any of it.

Find New York in the chart.
Click on "lemon law info used cars".
Go to General Information
Click on "lemon law for used cars" Question and Answers.

Read on, you'll be surprised at what they were supposed to do and didn't. This will tell you that they were responsible for repair with a warrenty that they were, by law, supposed to issue for you. If you can copy this whole page for your records and for the attorney.

That's great that your mom is getting info. As for your cousins brother, I'm sure he would testify for you. As long as he remembers the car, he can testify. Can you call him and tell him the situation and possibly ask him what problems he came across? Write them down or have him do it to take to the attorney. If he can't do it right away that's fine, go to the attorney regardless asap!!!

I just can't stand seeing people like that get taken for a ride. She did not deserve that what happened to her at all. And from what she's said, those jerks that sold her the car knew what they were doing. That's why I'm studying to be a paralegal, so i can legally defend the innocent and get the guilty to pay for what they've done. Maybe after that, I'll go all the way and become a lawyer. One step at a time. We'll see what the future holds. Wish me luck, I need it. The courses are very hard and sometimes I feel like just giving up. But then I read what happens to people and I get mad all over again and realize why I'm doing this.
