View Full Version : Mrs. Garrett one of "the worst characters on TV"??
ABlairican Pie 10-16-2003, 11:03 PM I had the grave displeasure of reading the latest FHM issue, one of those guy-type mags like Stuff and Maxim with scantily-clad women and all, and they listed a whole 50 "bad sitcom characters"--and Mrs. G was one of them!!!   They had the lowbrow tast to compare her to a "walrus" and other stupid crap, so, now this magazine will be honored with being the 2-ply liner for my catbox. Now I have to go out and buy a cat.:cat:
Mrs. G "one of the worst"?? Is there no justice in this world??
james_baby87 10-17-2003, 01:59 PM Thats just ..... I dont know but its wrong!
DetectiveGriffin 10-17-2003, 02:25 PM I spose everyone's entitled to their opinion. Outside the scope of sitcoms, but i always thought the worst tv characters in history were Wendy, Marvin, and Wonderdog from the superfriends.
Czas na Zywiec 10-17-2003, 03:16 PM I just read that magazine a few days ago. I found it funny.
And the number one spot, for the worst characters in television history are....
The Tanners!

What was it about Superfriends?? They were never going around pounding the crap out of the Joker or Penguin or Lex Luthor or any one big and evil. They just sat around and were being "Super-friendly."

agreed.
DetectiveGriffin 10-17-2003, 08:28 PM Superfriends rock - well, except for batman, whose only power was bat hopping and bat running and bat-everything else - and poor Robin, who was great at gymnastics. Wendy, marvin and Wonderdog must have been like, vocational students with the high school - doing that part-time work study - I dont know.
Obviously, I will have to address the entire situation with an 800
page fan fiction story. Hmm ... maybe a drama. <GGG>

Of course I loved Superfriends, but they needed better villains. But that Wendy, Marvin and Wonderdog were...baggage??
DetectiveGriffin 10-17-2003, 08:53 PM Oh, i dont know. I really though "pudgy" Lex Luthor, a scarecrow!, an ape, and a robot-clone whatever the heck BIZARRO was, were pretty cool supervillains. Oh the memories.
I liked the first show, the hour long one, that Ted Knight? narrated. "Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice ....."
I was trying to record it on boomerang when my friend lost her dish tv. Could beat her to death, I tell ya!
We probably shouldn't reminisce here, the FOL folks may have no interest.

I think Bizarro was a sort "parallel-universe" kind of Superman, or some thing that Luthor created that changed everything into some twisted opposite of itself. Like the real Superman was lean and rugged, but Bizarro was more like a cubist sculptor's nightmare--and he talked always in opposites of what he meant.
I actually only saw clips of it in comics.
I thought the voice of the narrator sounded familiar!!
DetectiveGriffin 10-17-2003, 09:28 PM i just dont remember if bizarro was a robot or a clone - eh, one or the other man. one or the other.
ive got a message board for superfriends on my website, but none of my friends like the show. come over there and gab with me any time.

hey, do you watch smallville and stuff? heh heh heh
Rebel Queen 1980 10-17-2003, 11:39 PM Was Alice from The Brady Bunch not mentioned?,I never did like
Alice for some reason,I watch the reruns and she annoys me,
Mrs.Garrett on the other was cool,I liked in Diff'rent Strokes
and The Facts of Life
DetectiveGriffin 10-18-2003, 12:08 PM Poor Ann B Davis. Never fully appreciated in this life. :(
:)
douglasjc 10-19-2003, 12:23 AM What about Allison Sugerbaker from Designing women, Belle Dupree from ALice, or Beverly Ann from the facts of Life. Surely these characters desire some mention.
MrsGarrettRocksMySocks 10-19-2003, 05:01 PM I think that people need to do RESEARCH before they publish things. For instance, if you search for "Charlotte Rae" (and perhaps "Mrs. Garrett") on Yahoo, you find none other than the I Hate Edna Garrett site, which, obviously THEY would agree with, but, looking at the guest book there, there are obviously TONS of Mrs. Garrett fans. But, some people are just odd that way.
Hershey 10-21-2003, 03:44 PM She wasnt one of the worst characters....she wasnt my fav though. The whole Brady Bunch cast was one of the worst!!! Mrs. G's character was much better than all of those characters.
You're really pointing your finger at the wrong person when to comes to bad characters on TV. Hello? Mrs. Garrett was the moral glue of "The Facts of Life". Without her, the girls would have just done whatever the hell they wanted without thinking of the consequences. Mrs. Garrett was there to lend some advice and how they can solve their problems on their own. Mrs. Garrett was the serious asset to FOL. When she left, the girls were all grown and doing things for themselves. And this is where the worst character on Tv came on: BEVERLY ANN STICKLE! They really did not need her, she was what you call an unnecessary addition. And that's what really killed the show. Not even a Natalie losing her virginity story could save the show and it died a merciful death.
I'm not ragging on Cloris Leachman, she is a great actress and all. She won awards for "Mary Tyler Moore" and everything else, but she was definitely not needed in "The Facts of Life".
antamo 03-15-2005, 10:10 PM  That makes me mad. I grew up and learned the facts of life from mrs. g and the girls. how dare they say that about poor mrs. garrett. how horrible.
FHM should stick to what they do best.
What is that again?
NancyEiE 03-16-2005, 09:10 PM How dare they say that about Mrs. Garrett, may they never have chocolate again.

Bravo to everything you said: at least someone who agrees with me that BEVERLY ANN ruined the show! MRS. G was the heart & soul of the show + after she left it lost its potential....
DJM77 11-19-2012, 10:40 PM It isn't suprising at all. Facts of Life is the most popular sitcom on this site, but outside of sitcoms online it wouldn't be anywhere near most people's top 20 list. Like it or not!
SneakerBoom 11-19-2012, 11:14 PM The character of Mrs. G was fine it was Charlotte Rae who was awful. She regularly recited her lines like she was going to bring the house down.

It's called "Free Speech." Get over it.
candycandy 11-20-2012, 07:44 AM THE FACTS OF LIFE is definitely the best Sitcom i v ever watched (WONDER YEARS + FAMILY TIES used to be my favourite ones when i was younger). I know it s a classic but i v only recently discovered: I grew up watching DIFFERENT STROKES (for some reasons FACTS OF LIFE wasn t showing in the country i was, at the time). I am a bit surprised some "crappy" shows like CHEERS or TWO & AN A HALF MEN seemed to be so popular on the planet when it s obvious FACTS OF LIFE has so much more depth + potential.... Oh well, i guess i don t do the rules but if i had a saying to this some shows would definitely be banned!
Johnny be good! 11-20-2012, 09:57 AM Something is just not right.
