I watched Bullitt last night and I just really loved the car chase scene. It reminds me of another excellent car scen in The French Connection. Enter this thread. Which of the two had a better car chase scene? It's close but I think the one in The French Connection was better. It was thrilling like the one in Bullitt but it was more full of action.
Both were great chase scenes, but I would have to vote for French Connection. The sheer danger of a car speeding down that street (I've driven there) is frightenting. Plus, the shot of the car crashing wasn't supposed to happen, but they left it in anyway.
It's just a more suspenseful sequence.

The car chase sequence in The French Connection is regarded by many as the most exciting, even to this day. Who can forget the woman with the baby carriage who narrowly escapes.

I love that movie Marlene! Dennis Weaver was great. It was scary and suspenseful.
That was Spielberg's first film or major film. An early sign of his genius.

John Frankenheimer directed Ronin and French Connection.
Yes, Ronin did have some great chase sequences.
I read that Frankenneimer used race car drivers who drove the cars from the passenger seats while the actors sat in the "drivers" seat so he could film them driving at breakneck speeds.
I said in my previous post that speeding through the streets of Brooklyn was scary, but that was nothing compared to the tight one lane streets of France!
No doubt about it, Frankenheimer knows how to direct a car chase!
I love that avatar Lucas Beatty!
