In that game between the Cardinals and the Royals, 1st base umpire Don Denkinger blew a call with three outs to go. The Cardinals could have won that game and many blame Denkinger for their loss and their 11-0 poleaxing in the next game. Little does anybody know that the Cardinals helped him become a legend. They had one opportunity to record a key out when one of the Royals players popped up and the Cardinals' catcher and the first baseman Jack Clark got confused and failed to make a catch. After an intentional walk to Hal McRae, pinch hitter Dane Iorg singled to right with one out and there was a play at the plate where they could have recorded a second out but the winning run scored. You can't really blame an umpire or a fan for what happened yesterday. Another thing that was mentioned during tonight's game: the fan wasn't the only one reaching for the ball. Several other fans were attempting to catch the ball, too. The fans around him had their gloves in the air and reaching for it so they pretty much would have done the same thing.
