Been going on kind of a Rik Mayall bender lately.
Ever since I watched the full three seasons of 'Bottom' recently.
Anyone recommend any Rik Mayall comedy to check out?
I'm curious to know what people may think of 'The New Statesman' or perhaps 'Believe Nothing'.

I haven't seen it lately, but I remember 'The New Statesman' as being fantastic when it was aired during the Thatcher years. It was frequently disgusting but very funny, and, so we hear, not too far removed from the reality of some of the awful young Tory MP's of the time !!

hi dude!

I'm a massive rik mayall fan in Adelaide, Australia! I own all of the Bottom episodes and all of the live shows as well. Hoping that the 5th Bottom tour gets released onto DVD or video.

Don't forget about Rik's movie Drop Dead Fred - although catered more towards light family comedy, its still very Rik Mayall!!!!:)

The New Statesman was one of the best comedies of the last 20 years.

Mayall was brilliant in it.

The New Statesman is good,eh?
Cool, they just released a new box-set DVD of every single episode of it and I was considering picking it up. Rik Mayall is the best. However he's even better when teamed up with his perfect comedic partner Ade Edmonson.

If anybody ever gets a chance be sure to check out 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' and 'Dirty Movie'. A couple of short films Rik and Ade did for 'Comic Strip Presents...' back in the early eighties for Channel Four.

Rik Mayall was brilliantly funny in a guest starring role as a WW1 flying ace in Blackadder IV, Blackadder Goes Forth.:happyface

Well, I found "Bottom" kind of depressing, but I still think he was hilarious in "The Young Ones." Is Rick really the "People's Poet," as he proclaims himself to be? Perhaps it's time for the people to decide.

Rick is a genius, I was watching a few episodes of Bottom last night myself, watching it critically too since I'm trying my hand at writing a bit. Paying closer attention than usual makes it even more impressive to me, they're both 'busy' all the time with their characters, always doing something, even if it's just pulling a beer from Eddie's overcoat. I want to pick up Filthy, Rich, and Flapcat, but it doesn't seem to be available in US video format, at least that I've seen. I'm hoping for The Young Ones Every Stoopid Episode for Xmas :)

I want to get that soon as i can, Every Stoopid Episode, I don't think I've seen every episode. I remember years ago when it was first being aired, or thereabouts, over here in the US (land of shame and embarrasment...sorry, couldn't resist) being amazed by The Young Ones, really forgot about it for some years until I became Internetty, such a great show.
I'm amazed by Bottom, though, I think it's as essential as Fawlty to a BritCom collection, maybe underrated a bit.

Well, just another reason for me to get it, Xmas present for myself. The Complete Bottom has an extra of Rick and Ade performing live as the Dangerous Brothers, Rick is almost unrecognizable, I thought it was someone else at first, and Ade's got a full head of hair. They get much, much better as time goes by, it didn't really do much for me. The outakes are funny, though, lots of 'Oh ****' remarks, and Rick wipes a boogie on a director or someone.
