View Full Version : ABC Family shows different versions of Family Matters
Urkel_2003 10-14-2003, 09:06 PM Did you notice how ABC Family doesn't make the same cuts that other stations do? Iv'e noticed in tonights episodes there was some scenes that I don't remember seeing before. It's been so long since the first season of Family Matters aired on ABC I don't remember these parts.
For instance in the Garage Sale episode when Laura sells the quilt, there is a scene when Eddie sits down and reads a Comic book, and says "Boy that Jughead sure is funny" or something like that, also Laura tells Eddie that if he doesn't help out more, she won't let him use the VCR they buy with the money they get from the Garage Sale.
In the second episode shown tonight, which was the very first episode with Steve Urkel, the entire scene is cut when Eddie comes into Leroys and tells Laura that he just saw Steve Urkel outside, and he's planning on asking her to the dance, and Penny tells Laura her brother is good looking and smart, and Laura says, "my brother? you are a sick person." Then there is an added part, after Steve comes to the table and says "Did I mention my Dad knows Wayne Newton" After Penny throws the Onion Ring at Steve's head, Penny says "Get Lost you Weasel" Steve turns around and bumps into the wall and says "excuse me". Another part shown that is cut from Syndication, is after Laura runs off to the porch and says "that's how we know there's a dance coming up, the phone will go dead!" Harriette says to Carl "You see Carl, I knew this would happen, she's too young to be going through this" after this Laura is out on the porch and after Eddie says "I know you like Mark Millhouse, so call him up and ask him" An added scene where Laura says "What if Mark says no? and Eddie says "that's just a risk you have to take" Another Added scene is after Steve goes into the kitchen, and Carl calls up to Laura and says your date is here, Rachel comes running out with the dress saying "He's her'e?! oh no Iv'e gotta get this dress done!"
Is there any other added scenes that any of you have noticed, or any cut scenes that are in the other syndicated epsisodes?
Brent88 10-14-2003, 09:30 PM I have noticed that... I have also noticed some of the scenes that come before the theme song I have never seen before. I don't remember the 1st season having this many scenes before the theme song before. It's been a couple of years since I saw these episodes though.
What confused me even more was the second episode tonight... don't Laura and Steve go to a restaurant and he orders frog legs. They are on a date in that episode and it's one of the first episodes, I thought that was tonight's episode. I was very confused by that.
Either way, I am just glad to see Family Matters on at a decent hour on weekdays.
I hope to god ABC Family doesn't cut out tags at the end in the later seasons which run during the closing credits. They could at least show them and then show the closing credits like they are doing now.
Urkel_2003 10-14-2003, 11:04 PM Yes there are added scenes before the Theme song. On TBS and WGN, they always cut certain beginning scenes out. Like the one from the first Steve Urkel episode that was on tonight showed an opening never seen in Syndication before when Eddie has a dress on, and Rachel is making it for Harriete. Carl, Laura, and Judy come in the room, and Carl says Son, I think we need to have, a little talk.
Brent88 10-15-2003, 10:54 AM Yeah, that's what I thought. Also the one from the Rachel's First Date(4th episode) where Carl has made this Pie type thing and Steve comes in and says "Your not gonna eat that are you" That's before Steve ever came into the TBS and WGN episodes.
Urkel_2003 10-15-2003, 02:13 PM No that opening from Rachel's first date was in the other syndicated versions of the show. Even though that episode was made before Steve Urkel premired on the shown, they later added an opening tag with Steve Urkel in it. They did this with 4 other episodes that were made before Steve Urkel was introduced. That way it would make it seem like Urkel was there from day one.
Brent88 10-15-2003, 02:44 PM It's funny though how in Laura's First Date(Episode 12) Harriette asks Steve: "Who Are You?"
Urkel_2003 10-15-2003, 07:35 PM Two new added openings that were not in the other syndicated episodes.
In "Man's Best Friend" the episode where the kids bring home a dog the opening has Eddie working on some kind of project for school, Steve Urkel walks in and Eddie says "Urkel don't you ever knock" and Steve says "If I did that, nobody would ever let me in" Steve tells Eddie he's gonna ask Laura if she wants to go out on Saturday night, Eddie says your'e wasting your time, Laura is never gonna go out with you, Laura comes downstairs and Steve asks Laura if she wants to go out on Saturday night, and Laura says I'm busy, then Steve asks "How bout Sunday night?" Laura says "let me put it to you as nice as I can "I will never ever go out with you. Laura leaves the room, and Steve accidently trips over Eddie's project and ruins it. Eddie looks mad at Steve and Steve says "Did I do that?" This is the second appearance of Steve Urkel, and that was the first time he ever used that catch phrase.
In the second episode, the one where they bake 12,000 tarts, the opening tag has Rachel with a robe on and carrying a towel, Eddie, Laura and Judy ask Rachel if she wants to go to the Mall, and Rachel says I ain't exactly dressed for the mall, I think I'm gonna take a shower instead. Steve Urkel enters the livingroom and says Hey everybody, since your'e all about to go somewhere is it allright if I tag along. Laura says, wer'e not going anywhere, wer'e playing Hide and Seek. Steve says I love that game, my parents used to play it with me, once I found them in Milwake with their names changed. Laura tells Steve to go in the closet, and count to 25, while Steve is in the closet, they all run out the door. Steve comes out of the closet, and overhears the shower running in the bathroom where Rachel is taking a shower. Steve says "That shower running doesn't fool me Laura!" he goes into the bathroom and Rachel screams. Steve comes out embarassed, and says "Sorry Rachel...." Then Steve stops for a minute and looks stunned, then he shout "Wow..............!" and runs out the door.
I remember this one from when it was on ABC Prime time about 14 years ago. I don't understand why TBS, and other syndicated versions of this series left these opening tags out.
Brent88 10-15-2003, 08:48 PM I don't understand either. I noticed both and was like what the heck. I don't think TBS/WGN ever showed any scenes before the theme song in any of the episodes from the 1st season.
BTW: The one with Rachel in the shower was hilarous...:rotflmao:
musicradio77 11-14-2003, 10:29 PM Brent88, does WB11 uses the "Family Matters" theme song that had been used in syndication on weekends?
Brent88 11-14-2003, 10:44 PM I don't live in NYC so I don't get WB11 and where I live no local station has Family Matters in reruns. Only channel I can watch it on is ABC Family.

That's strange. I live in New York and I still have my local WB11.
Brent88 11-14-2003, 11:04 PM BrooklynGuy,
I DO NOT live in New York. I live in Alabama...
make sense?
My WB station is different than yours.
James 11-16-2003, 03:20 AM I've noticed the following cuts:
In "Bowl Me Over", where the Winslows go bowling (in a grudge-match competition, not a friendly family get-together), ABC Family cuts out Mother Estelle's quote about the blackout being a message from God telling them to stop fighting.
In "Life of the Party," where Laura and some friends have a rooftop party (where Steve does the Urkel dance), where Willie and Waldo spike the punch, after they're arrested, ABC Family deletes "Can it be a 976 number?" after the policeman tells Willie and Waldo they can make one phone call while escorting them down from the party.
Brent88 11-16-2003, 10:00 AM I noticed two scenes on ABC Family that I never saw on TBS/WGN.
In the episode where Eddie crashes the car into the living room, after Carl says "Harriette there is a car in the living room" 3 times, Rachel then says "Well at least we know where it is" I don't remember that from other channels and also when Judy and Richie are in the Living room eating a sandwich and Judy leaves, a dog comes through the curtain and takes Judy's sandwich. I have never seen that scene either.
Superbatboy 11-16-2003, 05:50 PM I guess I have to start watching ABC Family, I didn't even know Family Matters was airing on that station. Boy am I late.
