In the episode where Mrs. Roper showed up at the door 'cause she left Mr. Roper, they were excited to see her. She and Jack gave each other a big hug. Then when Janet suggested she sleep on their couch, did you notice how funny Jack was acting?
He looked upset and said she couldn't stay there. WHY NOT?
He let everyone else sleep over, including that old man pest, who kept starting fires! The old man was a total stranger and Jack wanted him to stay. Yet, he wanted Mrs. Roper, who they knew for years and was always nice to them, to leave. Didn't that seem odd?

He probably thought that Mr. Roper would be coming after her.

maybe he thought that janet would say "no don't sleep on the couch, you can sleep in jack's bed." or something and jack never likes sleeping on the couch so...ah, i doubt. who knows? but it was a funny episode.

Couch or no couch, he always let other people stay. He knew Mrs. Roper for years. She was crying and needed a place to stay and he wants to get rid of her?? That doesn't seem like Jack.
Besides that, it was very funny. I loved Furley's expression when he noticed her in bed with him and heard Mr. Roper calling.

Yeah, The Night of the Ropers was a great episode.
But to answer the question, it may have had something to do with a previous bad experience the trio had when they let Mrs. Roper sleep over. I remember very well that in a previous episode when they had let Mrs. Roper sleep over late one evening, she decided to take a bath before sleeping. She started singing in the bath, disrupting the trio's ability to sleep.
