Which of Andy's girlfriends do you prefer??? I like Ellie.

In reruns, all of a sudden Ellie and Barney are gone and they change the show to color! Did Ellie move or break up with Andy?
I always wondered what happened! And Barney, I've never seem an episode of AGS that explains where Barney went!

I like Ellie's personality (and looks) better (a matter of personal taste, they are both attractive), BUT I think Helen is a better match for Andy, and was actually more believable in her role. Somehow she seemed to fit into Mayberry better.

I didnt like either one. He should have stayed with Peggy!

When I see the Peggy episodes I think of poor Ryan O'neal exwife. I think her name was Joanna Moore. The character was so sweet and innocent and Joanna got into drugs and booze. A total opposite. Sometimes it's hard to believe she was so different in real life.

I agree with vedastone. I like both helen & ellie, but like i said i agree with vedastone. :)

I don't think they ever had an episode of "TAGS" that explained about either of them.

I like both as well but I had a crush when I was a kid on Helen. I loved her blue eyes and thought she had a cool smile. I liked her overall character just a tad better then Ellie.

I liked Ellie better, but I thought she seemed to young for Andy. Helen seemed more the mature and a match for Andy.

I preferred Ellie. Helen was pretty one-note in my opinion.

I read somewhere that Elinor didn't get along well with either a director, producer or maybe Andy and decided to leave the show.

Didn't really care for either one that much,but would have to pick Ellie over Crump who was mostly just a b**ch!

Agreed...there were a few episodes where Helen was OK...like the "Andy and Helen lost in the Cave" episode...but more often than not she was a bit of a pain IMO. Plus - the writers didn't do her any favors ("Crump?"). While I realize it was the 1960s, she never seemed in the slightest bit "sexy". Even when Andy and her occasionally talked about marriage ("sometime..when the time is right"), it always seemed like a boring negotiation more than a hope for the future.

Ellie was fun and cute - but she did seem a bit young for Andy...I liked Peg best of Andy's girlfriends.

To be honest, I wish they had made Thelma Lou Andy's girlfriend. I think she was funnier - more real - and more on par with Eleanor Donahue as an actress. I think she would have interacted much better with Aunt Bea.

One of my favorite episodes is when Alan Hale jr tries to get Thelma Lou to be his girl. Andy so delicate tells Alan all the things Thelma wants. She gets the little finger foods out and there is big Alan who wants men food. I just thought it was clever with out really vocally saying to Alan "You aren't my type"

I liked Ellie much better than Helen. Helen seemed to be a bit of a grouch & didn't have much of a sense of humor. She would have made great spinster.

Elinor Donahue left the show because Andy Griffith didn't like her for reasons she claimed she never knew. A shame, because she had the potential of being a great character.

Andy likely never got over the fact that she wanted to run for town council ;)

I prefer Ellie, and I wish they had kept her on the show longer. I'm sorry, but I never liked Helen. She always came off as jealous and shrewish, and she was always mad or heckling Andy over something. They just didn't seem to have much chemistry. I actually would have preferred to see Andy end up with Peggy! She seemed very down to earth. After season 5, when the show went to color, Helen REALLY started getting annoying and even more shrewish. I disliked her even more then!

I wonder why Joanna (peggy) did make more appearances. Oh yes Barney gave Andy the impression that she was way above Andy in society's class.

Count me in on the Peggy bandwagon. She was sweet, but oh, so sexy. Definitely Andys best choice. Second would be that woman who was a sharpshooter, but pretended not to know how to shoot a gun. She may have only appeared on one episode, but she had potential. Third would be Ellie, who had spunk and lit up some scenes. Last place would go to Helen, who just seemed like she was in serious need of Midol.

I remember the episode where Opie is jealous of Andy being with Peggy. I think at the end Opie and Peggy became some what blood brothers. She and Opie got over their differences and she seemed to want to be a friend to Opie.

What is the most interesting in all this is the fact that Helen was the least popular of any of Andy's lady friends. I think Andy admitted at one point he had difficulty with romantic scenes, which may account for the more standoffish Helen character enduring as Andy's love inerest.

Here's a thought? Which girlfriend would you think Aunt Bea liked.
She was around Helen more . Did Peggy or Ellie get into the Bea's house?
Or who did Opie prefer. Having my school teacher for my dad's girlfriend might have made me cringe.
