Things have gotten way out of control over the past few months, I've reached the point where I don't want to deal with it anymore. It's especially bad on the random posts board, why can't everyone get along? I've been ''forced'' to ban several long time members or I am portrayed as the bad guy always or looked as I'm doing nothing about it. Everyone here has probably done something that could get you banned, admit it. Put yourself in my shoes for a minute.

Maybe I should just shut down the Chit Chat and Random Posts board because there is just no way to control things anymore. It's gotten too big, too fast. I have no interest in any of the chit chat boards, I rarely read anything on them. Maybe I should just stick to the sitcom and tv related boards and stuff I have an interest in...

I want this to be a fun place for people to visit, but I can't break up every single little fight and argument. I can't ban somebody just because you disagree or don't get along with them or were emotionally hurt by them. There is not enough time in the day for that.

We were always able to get through the problems before, but things have gotten so bad now I don't know if they are repairable. It might be time to say "goodbye" to everyone and close this area of SO.

I really am sorry that these "long time members" that were stalking some of us were just petty little arguments to you, but believe it or not, they are a real danger to us.


Perhaps if you have no interest in this anymore, it's time to turn those boards over to someone who does have interest in it. I'm not trying to be snotty, but that sounds like maybe it should happen.

TJ, I really do understand your position. We have all done something wrong, i'm not going to lie. But i sure do hope that you keep Chit Chat. I sure will be alot more nice to people after this. If Chit Chat gets shut down i will miss it alot. But i do understand :(

TJ, I suggest you just close down Random Posts. Every message board is never without a General board (in this case, Chit Chat), and I'd really hate to see this board go... This is where everybody comes to check on other stuff not related to sitcoms...I'm with you for closing Random but please don't shut down Chit Chat together. It gives everybody a chance to unite.

You should enforce some kind of "TAKE YOUR ARGUMENTS TO PM" rule and REALLY enforce it. That way, you wouldn't be having this problem...You enforced the signature rule and made us all follow it and you didn't have a problem after. Please think this through before you make your final decision.

Did I ever say you were responsible for that? No. Most of what happened to me was on this board. I just didn't think it was fair to have him running all over the boards fooling every girl here.

I can understand closing the random board. It really is just a big waste of space. I don't see why chit chat needs to be closed. Maybe some more mods will help. All well lifes a bitch.

I come here a couple times a day, dont always read the threads, I only read ones that sound appealing, but what is going on? besides some arugment in the hilary duff thread?

I totally understand why TJ is closing the Chit Chat post..I have encountered only a few people that gave me and my friends a hard time..I came to SO to make friends and discuss topics of classic TV shows, etc.

I have been on SO since April and so far I have met a lot of wonderful people that I enjoy and look forward to chatting with...and had a lot of laughs and good times since then....I mean I have not been perfect myself and rubbed a few people the wrong way..and I was at fault..I made it a point to apologize...and since then these individuals and myself are friends and are at good terms..I understand that there are certain people out there that enjoy making people upset and angry and what is their point?

There is enough problems in the world...and Sitcoms On-line should be a place where we are allowed to have fun, laugh and make new friends

Can I just ask, what happened? Is the random post board closed for good. How sad, I used to talk to my friends, whom I've never met, here online when I had no one else to talk to. I hope I can find them again on other posts. If not, it's gonna get real lonely for some people. Sorry for my ignorance as to what happened, I'm a little new here and don't know much about these boards yet. Unfortunatly, just as I was getting comfortable, it was taken away. The Random Posts board seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's probably time to move on.

As far as the post counts, are they really that important? Let's be honest, the post totals of many are inflated by the random thread type posts. It was too much of a contest for some people. It's quality over quanity. No one member here is as important as anyone else, we are a community.. well we used to be atleast. :(

TJ I hope you don't close the Chit Chat board, that's one place I like to post besides the Wings, and Boy Meets World Board(which has gotten really bad these days)

I never saw a point in the random posts board, it just seemed a waste of space to me

well I dont know what to say :( I'm sad that you're thinking of closing the chitchat boards TJ but its not really my decision to make I agree with everyone when they say things have been bad lately so maybe it IS a good idea BUT I just have to say I go to ALOT of message boards and MOST of them have the same problem you cant really get rid of the trolls they'll always come My Message board (My CSI one) is still sort of new so I dont have Trolls YET but i'm sure they'll come soon

its a donation, of course u dont get your money back, its not a membership fee TJ is charging for you to come here...I dont think closing chit chat is the way to go about it, some of the posts made are useless and a waste a bandwidth, but for the most part everyone seems to be getting along. i thiink what u might need are some more active mods to sorta police and enforce the rules.

I know that it is a lot of work, and a lot of hassle. I, too, dislike the fighting. But I think that assigning some moderators to help out should be your first step.

As others have stated, a general off-topic forum is common on most of the boards that I have visited. Off-topic posts are a natural occurrence. If you do not have Chit Chat, then these posts will begin to resurface on all of the other forums, perhaps inundating them (especially the General forum).

Frankly, speaking only for myself, lately Chit Chat is the only forum that I visit on this site. I have been much too busy at work to have any energy to peruse more than one forum. I don't watch any of the current sitcoms, and there is only so much that can be said about the Golden Oldies. How many times can a person talk about which season of I Love Lucy is their favorite?

Why don't you delete any topics that are older than a year or whatever. That will make the board smaller. We don't need topics from like years ago still on the board there are hundreds of pages of stuff that noone really even reads any more....:confused:

What I dont get is this.. you people that posted on the random thread board are saying 'It was bad from the start' and 'Its a waste of space', etc.... meangya, if you had that big of a problem with it.. you wouldnt have posted/made threads there in the first place. That doesnt make sense.

Anyways, its really no big deal to me. It was fun and I can see from TJ's POV. It was good to have random threads, but there were like.. 4328432 made everyday.. half of which only lasted 5-20 replies.

Yeah TJ. I recall back in.. January was it? That fights were all over the place, and people were getting banned left and right. You made a topic looking for moderators, yet, I still havent seen any. I volunteered, but said I had a bigger interest in moderating the Happy Days board.. so you made me a mod. First off, let me say I applaud the post total removal. As I stated in another thread, people were posting stupid, pointless bull**** for the sole purpose of adding another post under their belt. In a lot of peoples' minds, post total=seniority.

Secondly, I think that, as stated above, the chit chat boards - all of them - need a new moderator or two or six. If you really have no interest in the chit chat section of your site, I think assigning a few chit chat-specific moderators might help ease the load a little bit.

Things get out of hand here at the drop of the hat, but this is usually the only place I post at Sitcoms Online. I find myself actually discussing sitcoms less and less, and politics and music more and more. I think a lot of people can say the same as their tenure here marches on. Sometimes a guy just runs out of things to say on the Cheers board, you know?

Just my $0.02.

I post on Chit Chat, Mama's Family, General Board, Music and Movie boards. But mainly this one! How I would miss it!:(

I like this board because there are nice people here who I get along with and talk to, you not being one of them. And I called you a Nazi after you banned me for no apparent reason, just because we didn't get along and you were immature and wanted to play games. So, yes after you banned me I DID call you a Nazi. I don't think this site is anywhere near as bad as as some other message board communities that I've been to. Yes, there are some trolls here and people who like to fight and cause trouble, but that could happen anywhere, not just in Chit Chat sections. I've posted here for almost three years now and I have always felt that I am welcomed here.

It really stinks when a few jerks have to ruin it for everyone else. I really hope you don't close the Chit Chat section, but if you decide to do it anyway, I'll understand.

Can't you just have some of us members moderate this section? I'd do it, only I don't have as much time to come here as I used to.

Yep. People just don't say anything new anymore. Or if they do, it turns into a fight (look at the ILL board).

Getting rid of the random board won't really bother me...but I don't think you need to delete the chit chat board. I think people have already made a lot of good suggestions about it. And I've also met some really cool people on this board I wouldn't have met otherwise if there wasn't a chit chat...I'd hate to see it go. :(

Why get rid of the Chit Chat board? There are a few smart asses and trouble makers GET RID of them instead and the problem is solved. 90% of the people that post here are great people, what a shame it would be to lose Chit-Chat over a few bad apples.

I respect you and I know you're in a tough position, but please. Dont let 3 or 4 losers make the rest of the board suffer. I enjoy posting at Chit Chat, and it's a great way to make friends on these boards. it will be a shame to get rid of it.

I don't get how you jump from the two extremes so quickly...originally it was like...swear/get in a fight...your banned. now it's just like..do whatever...I dont know, but I don't understand it to be honest. Not complaining, just an observation.

I don't know if what I'm going to say has been talked about here yet, but I didn't really feel like trudging through eight pages to see if it has. ;) I don't come by here all too often, but a lot of the times I do, I'm amazed by how unregulated this board is compared to others I go to. Instead of shutting down Chit Chat, why don't you (TJ) just add more mods to help take care of these "problems" around here (which I admittedly know nothing about)? I think the key word here is delegate. The verb, not the noun. ;)

I think the Random Board was a bad idea to begin with. It was just going to get out of hand.

TJ, plase don't close the Chit Chat board. This, and the TD boards are all that I read anymore.

I talked to Todd about this. He told me that he doesn't like to pick one moderator over another. He also said that he keeps an eye on Chit Chat but now I'm confused by this (he said in this thread that he doesn't come here often).

All of the problems were basically on the Random Posts board, Chit Chat will remain open.

I don't see how having a moderator or two for the random posts board would have prevented anything though. Nobody could have read all 260,000+ posts on there - it was basically an unmoderated chat room. Moderators can't ban people, that is up only to the admins.

I think we need to have some criteria of what will get you banned. I don't like being in the position of the sole person responsible for deciding if someone should be banned or not. It's a no win situation for me.

You've listed the rules for posting. Perhaps any violation of these rules could fall under a three strikes and you're out policy....or implementing a suspension policy....

i thought it'd be a bad idea when it was first put up but i liked posting there so i did... it was fun posting there even though it was kind of a waste of space so i aint too upset about it.

i'm guessing i lost a bunch of my posts from all the little topics i made on the random board.

TJ, I think you should have given at least a 3 days notice that you were closing done the random board. I had a HECK OF A LOT of stuff stored over there, things that I can't get back or find again, and now it's all gone. I'm not trying to rant all over the place or anything, but in the future you should do that, give a few days notice so that people don't lose things, or either make it a rule not to store things in posts.

I miss the way the boards used to be. Ahhh the good ol' days...*stares into space*

There weren't nearly as many fights before. (Well there was the whole TD board thing but thats another story.) Then along came all these new people who were just here to piss everyone off. 95% of the fights here are because people can't handle other people's opinions. I know I've been yelled at because I don't like a certain type of music or whatever. Why can't people be normal anymore?

Now about the random board thing....I do have to admit I had a minor breakdown when Jeff first told me, but I suppose it is for the best. I didn't read any of the other threads but if there were problems then I guess it deserved to be closed. And now that I think about it, it would be hard to moderate. Woop.

Don't close the Chit Chat board...keep it here for us veterans. And throw out the ones who screw things up.

Then make a list. And if a member comes to you with evidence against this person, don't "think about it" or take your time. Just ban them. All my friends have left because of this. I'm amazed I'm even here, considering I have very few people to talk to.

And, I dont feel like getting the page again (laziness!!!) but what Chris (GOMM) said about going from one extreme to another. It was listed in the rules that swearing of any kind would result in banning. You know how many times Ive seen people totally ignore that rule? TJ my props to you because you truly have a difficult job and I really appreciate all that you do. I know I don't post much but I lurk around here quite often so here's my 2 cents:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting rid of the post totals. I have never understood people's obsession with their post totals. Quality over quantity - it cannot be stated enough! Everyone repeat: Quality over quantity. What's so special about having alot of posts if they are meaningless posts that contain one word in them? I could rack up a ton of pointless posts if I wanted to but what would be the point. Seriously, I don't get it. Someone please explain.

The random posts are no loss to me. If people want to talk with their friends they should take it to a chat room instead of wasting precious bandwidth here.

I think that would be a good idea. Post a permanent set of rules. Any posts violating these rules should be immediatly deleted and the poster warned. If that poster then violates another rule, they should be banned. It sounds kinda harsh but how else are you going to keep things under control. I know my first rule would be this:

Rule #1: No arguing with TJ, what he says, goes.

I'm sure you have other rules as you're the one dealing with the problems. And you could get member suggestions too. But that way TJ, you don't have to feel like you are soley responsible because the rules have been set up beforehand. You shouldn't feel bad about banning someone for not following the rules. It's your board! They know the rule, you have the final say, end of discussion. :D

Also, assign mods you trust and who you know are level-headed and reasonable to help moderate the chit-chat board. (Edited to say that I see that Janice is the new mod. Didn't see that before I posted this. Congrats to Janice.)

Well those are just a few of my thoughts. Feel free to completely ignore them as I have no idea what goes on behind the scenes or what it actually takes to run a message board.

Closing the random boards is no tragedy to me. I never posted there. It wasn't worth going through hundred's of pages of posts only saying things like ":lol:" and ":)" and ":barf:" to try to find one interesting comment.
