Which character do you find funnier?

Oh God, this is such a hard one!! It's like asking a parent to pick a favorite kid. I love them both, and I could never choose one. They're each very funny in their own way (Admittedly, though, Mary Richards never got a lot of big laughs).

Both shows are classic.

I'd have to vote 'Laura' since 'Mary Richards' was more of the straight woman while the crazy supporting characters like Ted, Rhoda, and Sue Ann got the big laughs.

I too voted for Laura. I like Mary, and she did have some funny moments (from the episodes I've seen---I haven't seen a lot of MTM shows)...but yeah, all the other stars got the really big laughs, while Laura wasn't as "straight", and therefore got to be funnier.

WHAT?! :eek2: Um . . . okay. You could have kept that to yourself, you know? ;)

lol

I don't find either one to be that funny. They were more of a serious type to me.

Laura Petrie was much funnier. Originally the character of Laura Petrie was suppose to be a small part only to be somewhat of a sounding board for Rob when he came home from the office. Mary Tyler Moore never had any sitcom and/or comedy experience before Dick Van Dyke. Carl Reiner saw her potential after the episode during the first season, "My Blonde Haired Brunette." That episode Mary was very funny and from that point on she became more of the second banana on the show. Originally Rose Marie was suppose to be the leading lady of the show which was why there was a bit of friction between those two. Laura was great in her scenes with Millie. Too bad there weren't more episodes featuring those two. They were an underrated funny female friendship pair.

Mary Richards, on the other hand, was great. She was the voice for working females. The issues she contended with, i.e. the episode The Good Times News, that working women had to deal with.

If I had a choice between which character that MTM played that I would date would be Laura Petrie.

Laura Petrie.

The Dick Van Dyke Show is one of my favorites, but I never could get into The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
