in some articles online that she is 1/2 Italian b/c of her mom's side. And in the Larry King Show, she said she is Italian.

well in the first few seasons, her hair was dark brown, then i think in season four, she died it jet black.

I thought her hair was always black. But now that you've mentioned it, I do remember her hair looking a little brown. It really showed when her hair was curly.

It always looked like her natural color was jet black to me.

Yeah drummergirl. That's what I always thought too and was alittle surprised to find out she's not at all Spanish!!

She definitely looks Italian and/or possibly part Hispanic/Mexican.

That said, in the episode where Terri was having the doctor over and Janet and Larry pretended to be her foreign married houseguests, why didn't they pretend to be Spanish, Italian, or Greek??

Larry was Greek and has black hair. Janet also has black hair, and I think she once said in another episode something about her Italian being rusty...

I'm glad that I tried to sort things out. Sorry, but I don't think Joyce DeWitt is at all spanish... maybe if someone goes to ancestory.com or some place like that and puts in Joyce DeWitt, that will probably be the only way to find out. Extra credit, anyone?

I found out that the last name DeWitt is French. Joyce does look Italian but I would say she looks more Spanish then Italian. IMO!!
And you were right Vegas Girl, why didn't they choose Spanish or Greek or Italian. It would've been better!!:lol:

The problem with calling a person "white" is that the Irish and Scottish for example, are in the same category with Italians and Greeks, when in reality, their ancestral origins couldn't be any more different. While trying not to group people by race, we often group them by skin color instead, which is not really a good thing to do, since it is not a reflection of a person's backround. In short, refer to people by their area of origin, not by their skin color. Italian, or even Medittereanean instead of just white. The same would go for the Irish, or perhaps calling them Celtic. And the English too, refer to them as Anglo-Saxons. The point is, don't group all light skinned people into "white". The same goes for all colors. Refer to people by area of origin, it makes more sense. :)

I always thought she looked Phillipino or any other Spanish/Asian mix for that matter. She was petite, had the jett black hair and dark almond eyes. In any case, she was always cute regardless of what her race may be. :)

Yeah, those almond shaped eyes, dark features and thick shiny hair made me think she was Spanish and/or Aisan.

Here's my two cents on the subject. Joyce DeWitt is indeed dark white with almond eyes but that doesn't mean she was either Spanish or Italian (turns out she factually is Italian though). She could have been 100% French and looked just that way. Hey France, Spain, and Italy are all on the Mediterranean. The people often look a great deal alike in those three countries. As for her being Irish well 10,000 years ago plenty of Syrian farmers(originating in the Middle East) settled all over Europe, with strong settlement in, surprisingly, the British Isles. Today's Irish are at least 35% Syrian but 65% Northern European in DNA so there are virtually no Irish as completely Mediterranean-loking as Ms. DeWitt. She definitely wasn't 100% Irish.

i think joyce looks pale in the first season. i always thought she just tanned a lot. in one episode, "extra, extra", the whole cast looks so dark! especially mr. furley. maybe they all tanned :)

Yeah, In the episode where Terri moves in and Janet gets nervous about Terri making moves on Jack, Janet's skin appears much darker!!
