Stanley Fafara -- Beaver's buddy 'Whitey' dies

PORTLAND - Stanley Fafara, the actor who played Beaver's buddy "Whitey" on "Leave It to Beaver" and later struggled with drugs and alcohol, died Saturday following complications from a surgery last month. He was 54.
Fafara had been admitted to the hospital in late August for surgery on an intestine constricted by a hernia. He suffered complications from the surgery, including a blood clot in his leg and underwent two more operations, which weakened an already frail body.

Years earlier, Fafara had contracted hepatitis C while using drugs. The surgeries strained his liver and kidneys, all of which shut down during the past several weeks. On Saturday, he slipped into a coma, and the life-support machines were removed.

"Leave it to Beaver" aired from 1957 to 1963 and made Fafara a celebrity.

In the early 1980s, Fafara started breaking into California pharmacies for drugs before he was arrested and sent to jail. When he got out, he worked as a roofer, waiter and janitor, but eventually Fafara began dealing drugs.

In the summer of 1995, Fafara checked in at a detox center, stayed for two weeks and graduated to a clean-and-sober house for addicts where he lived for two years.

Oh what terrible news!! I first heard about it when I visted these boards here. And I thought he was doing so well, there. He will be missed. :(

That is horrible. It must be something with the age 54 this month. John Ritter on the 11th was 54....Robert Palmer today died with a heart attack at 54 and now "Whitey". How creepy. We have lost so many celebrities this year.:(

I am very sad to hear this. R.I.P., Stanley.

That's so sad :( . I don't think I will be able to stand another celebrity death. Seems like every other day someone is leaving us.

OMG! Another celebrity death? RIP Stanley.

I wonder why they did not announce this a few days ago. Just think we were just wishing Stanley a happy birthday on the very same day he died. According the news, Stanley died on his birthday. Sept. 20, 2003. He was 53 years old.

i don't get it this is the first i heard of it...tv land hasn't mentioned it or anything. i think they should have a LITB marathon

This is a shame. It was awfully nice of him to visit on this board for the time that he did. I was interested in his life of recovery and wishing him the best.

How come they announced it six days later? I remember when Frank Sinatra passed away on May 14, 1998, we heard about it on next morning's news. (Nothing against Frank, of course!)

Oh, and according to imdb.com he was born September 20, 1950, so he died on his 53rd. How sad!!!

Wow, on my homepage today it said 'Leave it to Beaver' actor died, i thought it was Jerry Mathers or Tony Dow, honestly i forgotten about many of the other characters on the show. Still he was yet young and too young to die. Its amazing he use to post here. Wonder how the cast is taking it.

I agree! I watch TV Land a lot, and still have not seen any mention of his passing at all.

My favorite "Whitey" episode was "Wally the Lifeguard"....filmed on an open beach, with a lot of wind, and Whitey's hair was blowing everywhere. Quite a change to his usual style, with the well-kept look. He had a big smile while that was happening; a boy enjoying life.

RIP my man..........you are in a better place. :wave:
