In today's paper, there was a comic strip, Heart of the City, and they mentioned a boy whose nickname was Tootie. I just instantly thought of Tootie (our Tootie!)

What do you guys think ? I know that Tootie must have wanted her friends to call her Dorothy since it was her real name, but it must have been hard for them ! Let's say that you could rewrite that show. Would you have the girls and Mrs.Garrett start calling her Dorothy, or continue calling her Tootie ? I'd have to go w/Tootie ! It's so cute, ("like an ice-cream flavor")

In "Summer of '84", they mentioned that "last year, we tried calling you Dorothy, but you never answered" (I might be off).....can anyone remember when they called her Dorothy ?

I would go w/ Tottie.It woudld just be weird to hear people call her Tottie ya know.

I don't know- I took the whole we tried calling you Dorothy last year but you never responded thing as a joke. Everyone calls me Mimi- however my name is Mary. Now if someone called me Mary I would respond. That's why I didn't think Mrs G was serious. As far as rewriting the show-
If we were to start off with her being Dorothy and the name Tootie never existed that could work though I think it would change Tootie's character. Being Tootie she was the cute kid. If she were Dorothy it would give her a more mature character (which is why it would be sorta realistic for her to want the others to call her that in her older years).
However, as far as starting to call her Dorothy in the middle of the series, my sister's name is Peggy. Last year she decided she wanted to be called Meggy (both nicknames off of Margaret) Meggy never stuck as a name cause you can't just put years of calling somone by a certain name behind you and start calling them something else. I don't think it would be realistic if they just picked up on calling her Dorothy.
