View Full Version : Bob Hope, Johnny Cash, John Ritter, Gordon Jump...who is next?
sally mander 09-23-2003, 11:57 PM 2003 will go down as the year we lost many famous folks, even though we still have three more months left to go til we get into 2004.
Ever since John Ritter passed away, I have been hearing a lot lately about how death comes in 3s. Bob Hope-Barry White-Kate Hepburn, then Cash-Ritter- Warren Zevon. Now Gordon Jump....who do you think will be the next star to die?
Believe it or not, where I work not only was this a recent topic of conversation but a friend of mine told me on the phone that in her hometown her local rock radio station is actually having a contest, name the next "big name" to die you will win $1000.
I myself have seen this same question asked on other websites.
Ronald Reagan, Johnny Carson, Beth Howland ( Vera from Alice ), Sid Ceasar, Olivia Newton-John, Jim Nabors, and Merv Griffin were some of the guesses.
Reagan wouldn't surprise me !! When was the last time this man was seen in public? Same with Johnny Carson. I remember reading something awhile back that he is in bad health. And like Reagan, he too hasn't been seen in public lately, though I seem to recall that was Carson's plan once he retired from doing the Tonight show. To get out and stay out of the public eye.
Sid Ceasar I know is up there in years but the others like Newton John and Jim Nabors, likewise with Tony Dow and Mary Tyler Moore, I thought they had their health problems under control.
dawsongirl 09-24-2003, 12:17 AM I pray no one.
Sitcomwriter 09-24-2003, 01:17 AM Kirk Douglas is way past his due date and of course, there's always a shocker so I'll say Dennis Miller.
rere1 09-24-2003, 09:32 AM I think that the next celebrity to pass on will be Larry Hagman aka JR Ewing from Dallas. He has had numerous health problems over the years and according to rumors he has been spotted drinking again. I definatly think it will either be him or Former President Jimmy Carter, or Former President Ronald Reagen
Although I hope and pray it won't be any of them.

Wow...that's kind of sick, don't you think? Oh, well, to each his own, I guess. That would just scare me to hear my name mentioned!
Brian Damage 09-24-2003, 10:27 AM They say celebrities always die in three's. So with Gordon Jump's passing, that means two more if you believe in that stuff.
James 09-24-2003, 12:02 PM Olivia Newton-John would be a total surprise; she is only 54 years old (she will be 55 Friday and was born nine days after John Ritter, who died too young IMHO).
At any rate, my answer is NO ONE.
*PinkLady* 09-24-2003, 04:11 PM God, I hope no one. There's been too many devastated fans this year.

Ditto. But after John Ritter it really could be anybody, age wise. I really dont want to think about it.

Yes, that is very sick. I can't believe they are doing that!
Adamantium 09-24-2003, 04:27 PM Although I hope not, I'll go with Alan Young. You know, Wilbur from "Mister Ed". He was born in 1919. I don't know if he's sick now or anything, but you don't have to be sick to die.
That contest is kind of sick. Not just guessing who will die next, but for getting money if the person you guess dies.
BTW, the day Gordon Jump died, I thought about him. Before knowing he died. I wondered what it would be like when he died. And then later that day, I found out that he died. :(
benjamoon 09-24-2003, 05:29 PM That contest is sick....
I certainly don't wish this upon anyone but some guesses of mine would include Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, or Jimmy Carter.... Nixon died in 1994 and all 3 of those presidents seem to be getting up there in age
Alan Young or Sid Ceaser wouldn't be a shock since they are so old.... also in that category is Eddie Albert, who was born in 1908 I believe
I was in Washington DC earlier today. On one of their radio morning shows they were taking phone calls asking which celebrity will meet their "end" next. Ronald Reagan was the one most of the listeners picked as the "next one to go". I agree such stuff is sick but again its radio. The goal is to shock you into listening. Michael Savage and his "Savage Nation" show is a perfect example of that.
The death comes in threes thing has been around for ever. People were saying it back in 1977 when Elvis, Mr. French from Family Affair and Groucho Marx died within a short time of each other.
Same thing happened a number of years later when From November 1981 til March 1982, Nat Wood, Paul Lynde, and John Belushi died. Baseball's Roger Maris, Orson Wells, and Rick Nelson died within a short time of each other in the latter part of 1985.
I always get a kick when people really believe this stuff or whenever some star dies some believe it falls into some sort of pattern. I do have to admit sometimes it does get kinda spooky. I Love Lucy is an example of that. William Frawley died in 1966, 20 years later in 1986 Desi Arnaz died. Vivian Vance died in 1979, and just about 10 years later Lucy died. So if you believe in this so called pattern then the little boy who played Little Ricky ( or even Desi Jr. since may people connect him with I Love Lucy ) should watch his health in 2006.
On the female side of this, guess that was broken since I don't recall anybody from I Love Lucy dying in 1999. If I am right Lucie Arnaz ( like Desi Jr. many people connect her to I Love Lucy ) doesn't have anything to worry about in 2009. Hey...when did Mary Jane Croft die?
barwars 09-24-2003, 08:08 PM hopefully nobody.

Believe it or not but she died in 1999 as well as Lucy's second husband, Gary Morton.
jayman75 09-25-2003, 01:00 PM There really aren't any Golden-Age stars anymore. Now that Katharine Hepburn is gone, Bob Hope, etc, there just doesn't seem to be anyone left from that time. Elizabeth Taylor might count, but she's gone way downhill and isn't really fit. Same with Ronald Reagan. Fred and Ginger, Lucy and Desi, George and Gracie... all gone...
ItalianBread 09-25-2003, 10:16 PM The radio station is sick and so are you for starting this morbid post.

Hate to say this, but there are quite a few "morbid" people out there.
I enjoy listening to the local music station here. At night they play only 70s & 80s music. Last night they did a WKRP trivia contest and of course they brought up the passing of Gordon Jump. The dj also brought up John Ritter, Warren Zevon, Bob Hope, Johnny Cash and went on and on about how all these deaths came in " clusters of three" and he even gave his opinion on who will " kick the bucket next".
I turned it off. I have more important things to do with my time than to listen to some boob predicting who the next two dead stars will be.
A friend of mine watches a lot of the Fox News Channel, she was telling me in a tribute/disccusion about the death of John Ritter, they brought up Suzanne Sommers and Don Knotts' recent health problems. What was the purpose? I understand airing a news story about John Ritter but with so many folks out of work right now, those dying in Iraq and other places, AIDS, crime, kids with guns, violence, etc... There are more important things to talk about than who they think will die next from Three's Company.
Death happens. It doesnt come in 3s, 4's or 17s. It happens everyday and its a part of life.
The Gooch 09-26-2003, 01:31 PM I wouldn't call him a star, but I just heard on CNN that the guy who played Whitey on Leave it to Beaver died.
jayman75 09-26-2003, 05:56 PM Today...
Robert Palmer, singer
George Plimpton, author
Stanley Fafara, actor (Whitey from LITB)
Herb Gardner, playwright
That's four in a short time. Even though they were in different fields, it's a lot of entertainment ppl...
jayman75 09-27-2003, 10:05 PM And now, Donald O'Connor (from Singing in the Rain)...

shocolah 09-27-2003, 10:36 PM I hope no one else dies. We've had enough! Robert Palmer, who sang "Addicted To Love" died at 54 yesterday. WTF is going on? 2003 has been a horrible year. I know people die everyday, but why all these well-known people all of the sudden? Hopefully 2004 will be a better year. I'm ready for this year to be over and done with. It's been like a rollercoaster ride from h-e- double hockeysticks!
Just this last week another shocker Fred Berry:(
Who's next?
Pitooey 10-26-2003, 08:48 PM If she keeps her shenangians up it will be Courtney Love......... :(
James 10-28-2003, 01:11 AM I just heard Monday Night that Rod Roddy, announcer on The Price Is Right, died at the age of 66.
:crying:
jayman75 10-28-2003, 12:20 PM Whoa... Mr Flash has passed away? I can't believe it. He was also an ambassador to some country... that's where he got his shiney suits.
I'll have to investigate.
TV Favorites 10-28-2003, 02:45 PM Yep, it's true. Good ole Rod Roddy is gone. :(
BTW, he was the official ambassador to Thailand where he spent much time there and that is where he had his flamboyant suits made.

Well, Nixon and Ford were both born in the same year(1913), but Reagan was born in 1911. You can't always use the year someone was born as a guide to whether or not they're going to die soon. However, if you consider Walter Croncite's appearence in the CBS 75th Anniversary Special recently, you can't imagine him lasting too long. Sid Ceaser certainly looks like he's on his way out, but I keep thinking that Jackson Beck could die soon.
jayman75 11-11-2003, 06:22 PM Art Carney passed away this past weekend. I think on 11/9/03 (Sunday), but it was just announced today.
