Actress Julie Parrish (http://julieparrish.com/) , known for numerous roles in television and film, including her tenure on the popular TV series Beverly Hills 90210 and co-starring with Elvis Presley in Paradise, Hawaiian Style and with Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor, died unexpectedly Wednesday afternoon. We will post further details when her family is ready for us to share them.

In recent years, Julie has participated in Elvis Week events in Memphis, including hosting the Official Elvis Collectors Club conference last August. We mourn the loss of a lovely, lovely friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends in this difficult time.

Elvis' real life backing musicians Scotty Moore, Bill Black and D.J. Fontana were not allowed to play the roles of the band in the movie because according to the casting crew they didn't look like country musicians.

Trivia for Flaming Star

Originally planned as a vehicle for Marlon Brando, not Elvis Presley.

Elvis had another song number in the film, "Summer Wishes, Winter Tears", which was cut after preview audiences laughed at the staging (Elvis singing to the Indians around a campfire, accompanied by a chief on war drums). A studio version of the tune was recorded, but the original 'Indian' version was only resurrected recently on the German 'Elvis: Double Features' CD collection.

The original title for this movie was "Black Star". Elvis even recorded a song with that name. When the title was changed, he re-recorded the song, using the same words and melody, but changing the word "black" with "flaming". The song "Black Star" was unreleased for years, until it appeared on the Elvis boxset "Collectors Gold" in 1991.

Trivia for Wild in the Country

The song "Husky Dusky Day", sung in the movie by Elvis and Hop Lange, was unreleased for years and appeared on an official record only in the 1990s.

The songs "Lonely man" and "Forget Me Never" where recorded by Elvis for the movie, but were not used.

Trivia for Blue Hawaii

Juliet Prowse, Presley's co-star in G.I. Blues (1960), was signed to play Maile, but she wanted to use another studio's make-up artist and have the studio pay to fly her secretary to Hawaii, she pulled out of the film.

Angela Lansbury, who played Elvis' mother, was only 35 years old when the movie was filmed, a mere 10 year older than Elvis.

The song "The Meanest Girl in Town" was one of the only songs not composed for this movie. It had been written for Bill Haley and the Comets and recorded by them in 1964 under the title "Yeah She's Evil".

For reasons unknown, several of Elvis' songs are slightly sped up, making his voice sound higher than usual. This is most noticable on the title track. This error appears to have originated in the recording studio, as the RCA soundtrack album retains the sped up versions of the songs. A recording of "Girl Happy", mastered at the proper speed, would not be released until the 1990s.

This is the only movie for which Elvis did not record a new soundtrack. All the songs had been recorded between 1960 and 1963, and had already been released on several albums or singles.

It did get darker when he got older but not to the black color. That was dyed. I have the brand he used written down somewhere. I think its some type of Loreal. Ill try and find it later.

ANTIWAR ACTIVISTS TO REVISIT DISTRICT

Protesters from more than 135 cities in 38 states are
expected to converge on Washington on Saturday, as
busloads of antiwar demonstrators return to the capital
for the first time since the fall of Baghdad in April.

Organizers said the rally and march will draw tens of
thousands from across the United States and Canada. It is
the first event of its kind co-sponsored by two major
antiwar coalitions, International ANSWER and United for
Peace and Justice, both of which coordinated some of the
country's biggest peace marches this year. The
demonstration will coincide with a rally and march in
downtown San Francisco.

"The antiwar movement is becoming ascendant again; it's
rising once more," ANSWER organizer Brian Becker said.
"Our demonstration against the occupation on April 12 drew
30,000 people. We will draw substantially more than that
for this demonstration."

The gathering represents a resurgence of sorts of the
antiwar movement, which had put its large-scale protests
on hold in recent months as activists emphasized education
over direct action. No major antiwar rally has been held
in Washington since ANSWER's April protest.

ANSWER held a national conference in New York in May that
drew more than 850 activists, and United for Peace and
Justice sponsored a strategy session in suburban Chicago
in June that attracted more than 550. The meetings were
designed to focus the movement on charting its future, but
the period of relative quiet also allowed some to find new
strength to carry on.

"People marched and demonstrated a whole lot to try to
stop the war, and we weren't able to," said Leslie Cagan,
56, national coordinator of the United coalition. "That
had, I think, for some segments of the activist community,
a little bit of a demoralizing effect."

But as the number of U.S. casualties increases and as
support for Bush's Iraq policy slips in polls, antiwar
activists say the time is right to return to the streets.
"Where are those weapons of mass destruction?" Cagan
asked. "It turned out to be lies. As strongly as we felt
we were right a year ago, we're even stronger in that
conviction now."

Activists say they expect several veterans and family
members of U.S. soldiers in Iraq to participate. Last
October, Wilson "Woody" Powell, a 71-year-old Korean War
veteran, filled his scratched 1997 Dodge Caravan with
three other veterans -- one each from the first Persian
Gulf War, World War II and the Korean War -- for a 14-hour
trip from St. Louis to Washington. They headed to a peace
rally, stirred by what they felt would be an unjust war in
Iraq and hopeful that they and scores of others could make
enough noise to stop it before it started.

One year later, with the war fought and declared over,
Powell hasn't given up. He and more than 500 members of
Veterans for Peace are expected to head to Washington next
weekend to call for an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq.
"Is this how to cohabit on the globe, by just being bigger
and badder than everybody else? Or are we much more
comfortable being good neighbors?" asked Powell, executive
director of the St. Louis-based group.

Nancy Lessin with Military Families Speak Out said
spouses, parents and siblings of military personnel
stationed in Iraq or recently returned home are planning
to attend. She expects 40 or more families. "None of us
want our loved ones to be misused in the way that this
administration is misusing them, in a war for oil markets
and empire building," said Lessin, a co-founder of the
group that started with two military families in November
and has grown to more than 1,000 members. Lessin's son is
a Marine who returned recently from Iraq.

A listing of cities organizing bus and car caravans posted
on ANSWER's Web site reads like a map of much of the
United States: Wilmington, Del.; Harrisburg, Pa.;
Savannah, Ga.; Asheville, N.C.; Kalamazoo, Mich.; Cedar
Falls, Iowa; and Milwaukee.

New York's union representing 200,000 health and human
services employees, 1199 SEIU, is providing free bus
transportation to Washington for its members and their
families. And ANSWER has reserved 65 buses for the New
York area alone.

"I think that people want the occupation to end," said
Mike Shaw, 35, a restaurant supervisor with the ANSWER
chapter in Providence, R.I. "I think they feel the war was
pursued under false pretenses."

MEMPHIS TO LEAD NATIONAL CELEBRATION OF THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF ROCK 'n' ROLL

WORLD-RENOWNED MUSICIANS JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE, B.B. KING, ISAAC HAYES, AND SCOTTY MOORE TO SPEARHEAD EFFORT

On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley recorded his first record, “That’s All Right,” at the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis…and rock 'n' roll took off. To commemorate that event and its global impact, Memphis will mark the 50th Anniversary of Rock 'n' Roll in 2004 with a yearlong celebration of rock music and the many streams of music that converged in Memphis to create a truly American sound known throughout the world.

To lead this major initiative, Memphis Mayor Willie W. Herenton has appointed world-renowned musicians Justin Timberlake, B.B. King, Isaac Hayes, and Scotty Moore to serve as Musical Ambassadors for Memphis.

Justin Timberlake, the award-winning solo musician and original member of the multi-platinum *NSYNC, was born and raised in Memphis, where his family still lives. Said Timberlake: “The many sounds of Memphis shaped my early musical career and continue to be an inspiration to this day. I am proud to be part of this effort to honor the legacy of rock ‘n’ roll and Memphis’ place in its history and future.”

B.B. King, a legendary figure in American music and one of the greatest guitarists ever, is also synonymous with Beale Street, where he has been a leading presence for decades. “The blues and rock ‘n’ roll have always been closely connected, feeding off one another,” said King. “It’s that mixing of styles that has made Memphis such a fertile ground for musicians.”

Isaac Hayes, renowned as the Academy Award-winning composer of the musical score to the movie “Shaft,” began his career writing and performing hit songs, including “Soul Man” for Sam and Dave, at Stax Records in Memphis. “I’m delighted to be a part of this national celebration,” said Hayes. “Rock ‘n’ roll began in Memphis, and the city continues to be a focal point of enormous musical creativity today.”

Scotty Moore, recently named one of the 50 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine, played lead guitar for Elvis Presley on all of his Sun Records recordings as well as such subsequent #1 hits as “Heartbreak Hotel” and “Hound Dog.” Said Moore: “Having played lead guitar for Elvis’ 1954 recording of “That’s All Right,” it’s a thrill for me to be a part of this historic celebration.”

For the anniversary, Memphis will host a series of major events throughout the year. One of the highlights of the 50th Anniversary celebration will occur on July 5 – 50 years to the day when Elvis’ “That’s All Right” was recorded. On July 5, 2004, Memphis will be the focal point for a “Global Moment in Time” – a moment at which radio stations across the world will be encouraged to simultaneously play “That’s All Right.” This will hopefully mark the largest playing of a single song at the same moment in history.

Additional events planned for 2004 are outlined below; other events and opportunities will evolve in the coming months:

- “Countdown on Beale” on New Year’s Eve will focus on the 50th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll and serve as the kick-off event for the celebration throughout 2004.

- Elvis’ birthday is January 8, and there will be a number of events surrounding this day next year.

- Other major events and activities in Memphis on July 5th will draw attention to Sun Studio on that historic day.

- Elvis Week occurs August 7-16, 2004, and it will be themed around the 50th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

- FedExForum, Memphis’ new arena and home to the Memphis Grizzlies of the NBA, opens its doors in September 2004. FedExForum will be a state-of-the-art, 18,000+ seat, sports and entertainment venue, which will feature a uniquely Memphis music theme.

Memphis is known worldwide as the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll” – with close to 20 percent of the earliest inductees in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame having come from within a 100-mile radius of Memphis.

In addition to Sun Studio, Memphis is home to many other musical landmarks that add to its powerful history – the Stax Recording Studio, where Otis Redding recorded his famous “Dock of the Bay" and now home to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music; Graceland, the Home of Elvis Presley; the famous Orpheum Theatre; Beale Street, the musical entertainment district and home of the famous B.B. King’s Blues Club; the popular Gibson Guitar Factory, and the Smithsonian Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, which showcases the chronology of the rebellious talent that helped shape the sounds of Memphis.

“Memphis Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is a campaign conceived by Kevin Kane, longtime Memphis businessman and current President of the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau. A U.S. appeals court brought down the curtain on November 6, 2003 on a film documentary about singer Elvis Presley, saying it made improper use of copyrighted film, photo and musical material. The case centered on a video called 'The Definitive Elvis' a 16-hour documentary that retailed for $99 after costing Passport Video more than $2 million to make. Elvis Presley Enterprises, entities that owned the rights to various Presley television appearances and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who wrote the hits 'Jailhouse Rock' and 'Hound Dog,' objected to the documentary's use of their material. New York Times Feature on Elvis's Wardrobe 11/14/2003

Recently, New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/index.html?vendor=msn) reporter Guy Trebay visted Graceland in preparaion for a feature about Elvis's wardrobe and the new book Elvis Fashion: From Memphis to Vegas (http://www.elvis.com/news/full_story.asp?id=451). Word is that the feature will run in this Sunday's edition of the New York Times, November 16. We don't know at this point if it will also be posted on the paper's web site.

I ate at Hard Rock Cafe, and they had a Hard Rock Vault in the basement of their store (it was in another building). They had one of Elvis' outfits...
