In the first ep, Jack and Janet, thinking that JC Braddock was a man who'd invited Chrissy along on a business trip in order to take advantage of her. Jack mistook a man who would've helped his career as a chef as Chrissy's boss in that ep. In the other ep, JC Braddock hired Jack to cater a party for her, and a higher-level boss, played by the actor who later played Janet's dad, threatened Chrissy's career when she wouldn't give into his lecherous demands, so the three roomies managed to get him in trouble w/ his wife to get Chrissy out of trouble.

Apparently, Sidney Sheldon thought she was funny in a supporting role, and mentally remembered to bring her back the following season...since Dr. Bellows had already mentioned that he had a wife, why not bring her on-screen? And make her a bit "sophisticated" as well? And a suspicious "snoop"? And a little "frothy" to counter Alfred's "clinical" personality? {"Oh, Alfred, why don't WE ever do anything like this?"/"Amanda..I spend half my life CURING people who do things like this.." -"Jeannie, the Hip Hippie"}. Or have the nerve to flaunt her status in NASA society "{"I'm a colonel's wife!!"}. Or have someone who could react to an attack by an invisible dog, shrieking down a corridor in a shredded pantsuit and MAKE it look funny?

And THAT'S why Emmaline Henry became 'Amanda Bellows'!

For a long time now, whenever I'm about to watch an episode I'm hopeful that it's one in which Emmaline got significant airtime. Very lovely woman and a tragic loss at age 50.

I loved Amanda Bellows also. Emmaline Henry was so funny. I watched a movie the other day with my wife and daughter called Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (I know it's a girl movie). Nancy Travis played the stepmom of one of the characters. In the movie she looked so much like Mrs. Bellows. I think it might have been partly due to the hairstyle but her face even looked like her. My wife and daughter agreed.

Emmaline was an awesome talent, and actually much, much younger than Haden, more like Bill Daily's age actually...

I saw her Emmaline in a Highway Patrol episode done in the late 1950's. Maybe one of her first roles.

Barbara Eden had also done a Highway Patrol episode.

I've noticed other girls on the show could show their bellybuttons too, and I dunno why unless it's b/c when other women on the show show their stomachs it's just occasionally and Jeannie shows her stomach pratically all the time.

I sorta think that is a rude thing to say.

I mean in real life you DO see attractive ppl with not so attractive ppl.

I've just always thought it was kinda rude to say "he or she is to HOT to be with him or her." I mean what right have has anyone got to say someone is too unattractive to be with someone.


Also did you ever think when they were younger, Dr Bellows could have been better looking, looks DO fade when ppl get older. Even Amanda Bellows looks will fade eventually lol

If the latter, then this has nothing to do with the CHARACTER he played (Robert Reed, Dick Sargent or Neil Patrick Harris, anyone?). Yes, the late Miss Henry WAS quite fetching at that- yet they had Mrs. Bellows behave (and have Dr. Bellows react) as though she was a war-weary middle aged frump like Ethel Mertz or Doris Ziffel on "Green Acres". I suppose it made it more credible re Dr. Bellows NEVER being able to quite connect the dots re Jeannie if he didn't realize how gorgeous his own wife was. Maybe she blinded him with science like 'Miss Yakamoto' would in Thomas Dolby's video decades later.

Emmaline always looked great. She could make any fashions and hairstyles look terrific. A wonderful plus for the series, she was consistently excellent in portraying Amanda Bellows.

I always liked Emmaline Henry, first because she seemed like, and likely was, an extremely nice person. Second, because my last name is Henry too. But, like Gloria Henry, her last name was her stage name.

Since Miss Henry had died six years before that reunion movie's debut, I guess they felt it was better to not address her character at all than have to do any kind of acknowledgement of Mrs. Bellows's absence/death. Of course, it should be noted that not only was the show itself was a rather fluffy comedy rather than a drama or even a dramedy, it would have been a bit jarring to have mentioned it. Also, Dr. Bellows was an antagonist/foil to Jeanie, Tony and Roger so none of them would have had the kind of relationship to have reached out to him. For the longest time I always thought she was played by Nancy Olson, who played Betsy Carlisle in Absent-minded Professor. Who is still living today!!
