The concern of the Gunsmoke 'ptb' was that it would change one of the biggest ongoing dramatic elements which contained an air of mystery for which the audience was given an occasional hint. As for the fictional characters, it's something like a no-win situation, where they are both hopelessly committed to each other, yet neither could be completely satisfied by being less than totally independent.

The radio version of this show was much grittier than the TV version....Miss Kitty was known to be a madam, with working girls in her place...Matt was much rougher acting also...

also Matt says that he could never handle a house and his job. In season 19 or 18 a whole episode is about a fellow Marshall just like Matt and has a girl and he ends up leaving his job to get married to her. His girl also had a young boy who looked up to the other Marshall
