Edward Winter made his first appearance on M*A*S*H as Captain Callahan in the episode "Deal Me Out." A few episodes later, he appears as Colonel Flagg in "A Smattering Of Intelligence."

The two characters are basically the same, though Callahan appears to be somewhat sane. Anyway, the way I figure it, Flagg is always using an alias (Lt. Carter, etc), so I reasoned that "Captain Callahan" is one of his identities. Not too far off the mark when you consider how crazy Flagg really was.

I always loved that character...Winter played him with the right amount of insanity. He was a good actor. He played an abusive husband on "Lou Grant" was equally convincing.:rolleyes:

Flagg should have gotten the section 8 that Klinger was after.

Yes, it's pretty much assumed that Flagg was using an alias, in this case Capt. Halloran, as he often does while working for the CIA. Or is it the CIC?

In the season four epidode "Quo Vadis, Captain Chandler?" when Flagg greets Sydney Freedman, he mentions that they "played poker once," which proves that Flagg and Halloran were one in the same.

I guess old sitcoms felt they could get away with stuff like that, because they didn't thing that one day thier series would be forever rerun in syndication or on DVD where fans could spot those litte errors in continuity.

I overlooked that. Not that it really matters, because M*A*S*H like many sitcoms back then, regularly had the same actors return in different roles.
