Wow! I had absolutely no idea that an actual online community of Facts of Life fans existed! What a surprise!
I watched FOL faithfully from its start in 1979 through its last episode. I have yet to see s rerun that I didn't recognize from the first time around - now THAT'S fanaticism. (And I too had to negotiate with my parents for later "bedtimes" when FOL held weeknight 9 and 9:30 slots - its was tough.) I remember EXACTLY where I was when the first episode with Jo aired - one of my favorites.
I would not have guessed that FOL had a new generation of younger fans - I just figured that times had changed enough that FOL would no longer be "cool." I am happy to know that I am wrong. This show was exactly the kind of show that I needed while growing up - and I actually grew up with it, being close in age to the Natalie and Tootie characters.
Like Lisa/Blair, my hair comes straight from a bottle, and it has been more shades of blonde than I can count. As a teenager, I derived my entire sense of fashion from Nancy/Jo, right down to the blazers and high tops and skinny ties. (Ah, those were the days!) To say that the show impacted my formative years would be an understatement. That Nancy/Jo's character was a "tomboy" who was strong and did her own thing was not lost on me. I NEEDED that kind of role model growing up.
It is funny to watch the old shows on Nick at Nite - some of them are downright silly when viewed from my almost-30 perspective, but it is interesting to watch the evolution of the acting and the direction in "fast forward" - the show really got better each year.
At any rate, I just wanted to throw in my two cents about FOL and express my pleasure at discovering that the show is still appreciated for something more than its 80s nostalgia factor. Enjoy! I know that I will.
