Has anyone read this book? My (freshmen) English class is reading it now... it's horrible. The regular CP classes don't have to read it and I'm so jealous.... It's so boring, tasteless, confusing, and I hate the way Charles Dickinson (or Dickens?) writes his sentences. I honestly couldn't care less about what happened during the French Revolution, really.

Yes, I did last year in senior English. I'm surprised you're reading it this year because that's not how things work up here...you just get boring stories in freshman English, more boring stories in sophomore English, American Lit. in junior English and British Lit. in senior English.

I can never get into those books. The stories are interesting but the way things were written back then are very hard for me to comprehend. I'd rather just watch the movies.

Mine too! We have to listen to some british guy narrate it on audio and follow along in the book and write a summary for each chapter, which i cant do because its so boring and i cant pay attention..

I had to read it in english 9 a couple years back, it's not that bad. Not that great either though.

I feel for you. My Classical Lit. class is reading Homer's "The Iliad" right now. *Gags* Whoever invented sparknotes is a saint!!! :D

You don't care about what happened during the French Revolution???!!!:eek: OMG, that was one of the bloodiest, most fascinating times in history!!! How people imprisoned in the Bastille by King Louis XVI would clamor out for freedom and bread and depose and behead the king and his stupid wife and end up with the brute Robespierre, the head of the Reign of Terror, and then Napoleon!!! Plus, they had GUILLOTINES!!!!

A Tale of Two Cities was another book we had to read in 10th grade. I, however, chose not too (which is what I usually did). I mean, with the long list of books we read in high school.. I read about 1/4 of. If I didnt like a book but read it anyways, I wouldnt know what happened because I hated it. So I figure, not reading it is gonna be the same result. Id just pay attention to the discussions to get the gist of it and hoped I wasnt called for a question. If so, Id just make something up or whatever. If we had tests or quizzes on a chapter or 2, Id read the first and last paragraphs of the chapters.

hahahahahahahaahahahaha.....ahhh...yes...a tale of two cities, the most annoyingest book ever written. all the honors english classes were required to read it, and my teacher had to give it to us because it was required. she didn't even attempt to explain anything to us....just assigned it over spring break (we had one week to read it). it was so confusing, but I got sparknotes and it really, really, really helped. there were some parts of the book where i didn't understand what had happened, so i'd read the spark notes section for it, and it made everything better. go on sparknotes.com or get it from the bookstore!

You can learn an awful lot about dictatorship, revolution, the rule of the mob, the downside of revolutions, and the history of world democracy by studying the French Revolution and the Reign of Terror. The Marquis de Lafayette, who came to this country from France to fight along side Washington to help us win independence from Britain, was imprisoned and nearly killed during his own country's revolution. This is well worth studying.

Ashley, I'm talking about your town. The Spongerama is on that one really long street in Tarpon with all the shops, restaurants, and bakeries.

I only went to the Spongerama once a few years ago. That film was like some kind of 50s documentary on sponges, and extremely dry and boring. It was almost like a spoof of some kind, although it wasn't one. The movie was so boring that I felt like I was going to pass out. I tried to crawl out of the room, but my then girlfriend dragged me back and made me sit through the whole thing. Thereafter, she used to kid me about seeing it again. It was horrible, I tell you! Oh, the humanity! *sob*

I liked A Christmas Carol but not Great Expectations. We had to red the latter in freshman English and I HATED it. I thought it was boring and the characters were flat. Mrs. Havisham was really weird and she had that rotting cake! :barf:

I always thought Charles Dickens was a bit overrated, a cliché or proxy author, just like when you ask someone to name a playwrigt they ALWAYS name Shakespeare, when there were probably some plays wrote at the same time as Romeo and Juliet that where 100 times better, or when you ask someone to name a horror novel they jump straight to Dracula and Bram Stoker, truth is there are many many good horror novelists, he just got most hype. And now JK Rowling will be a 'default' author as well. I don't think the government ever review or question what is taught in English, they just leave it to continue, and if they want to teach about troubled young people Catcher in the Rye is always the example.
I've gotten off track, but really, Christmas Carol wasn't that good, and Oliver Twist is the most boring book you'll ever read.

I've always thought Dickens was pretty boring myself. The only story of his that I love is A Christmas Carol, and even then, I prefer watching the movie.

This is a real place?? I saw something similar on one of Micheal Nesmith's video records. I wonder if he's been there? :)

Anyway...I hated Tale of Two Cities when we started reading it (I was a Sophmore, I think) but then my teacher saw that we were having trouble reading it on our own, so we started reading most of it in class and having group discussions on it. Once i could understand what I was reading, I really enjoyed the story.

It's in Tarpon Springs, FL. *ShortCake* lives there, but for me it's a 45 minute ride. Tarpon Springs is fun, but the Spongerama has elevated boredom to lethal proportions.

I think they found a movie about sponges made some time ago. It looks like one of those instructional movies they showed you in school. It has lines that sound like, "Okay, here's another sponge we like to call type 153." I realy did start to feel like I was about to faint, and I never faint.
