I just wanted to start a new random thread for thoughts anyone has about current episodes...
Yesterdays WGN episode #134 "Married as Strangers" - the one where Howard and Marion go on their second honeymoon, I noticed a couple of things:

When they get into the room (which says 235 on the door, contrary to the HD online episode guide) and comment on how it hasn't changed, and Marion starts talking about the view, and opens the curtains, Howard says "If you want a romantic view, we'll have to wait until the leaves fall"

The problem is the tree in the window is an evergreen which has no leaves.

I also tried to figure out what a "Stingray" is - the drink they ordered, just to see if it really gets served in a pineapple, but i can't find anything about a drink called a "Stingray" at all.

Todays WGN episode #137 - "Fonzie's Funeral -part 1" ,
this one was a classic episode with all the components that made it great, but it almost turns into a "jump the shark" moment in the series, this was the first time when I watched the series originally that I felt "cheated" and that they were stretching to fill in the storyline when they were writing it.

Did the Fonz get all blowed up? - it was reminescent of those serial movies they used to have in the 50's with the cliff-hanger endings every week.... maybe it was supposed to be some sort of tribute to that?

Cool idea!

That episode(Fonzies Funeral) is one of my least favorite episodes. Its kind of silly. JMO

OK - part 2 of "Fonzie's Funeral" I honestly thought that the best part was seeing the Laverne and Shirley gang, Squiggy was classic: "He was the nicest guy what ever beat me up."

Oh, and I didn't recognize it when I originally saw it, but Richard Moll - "Bull" from night court played one of the Candyman's henchmen. The Candyman looks familiar too, anybody know what else he was in?

Y'know, everytime I watch the show now, I am amazed at just how long the show opening is - if they were to cut it down for the syndication, they could probably stop cutting all those scenes out of the episodes - what does anyone else think?

Tomorrow's WGN ep (right now that's all I can get), "The Duel" - this one was bad if i remember it correctly, wasn't it stereotypically offensive, blatantly insulting in the way it expected us to believe the Fonz could out-duel a world champion, and completely devoid of lucious Ralph and Potsie hilarity?

Well, tune in tomorrow kids and we'll see...

That's where I have a problem with The Fonz, whether he's fencing, water skiing, riding a bull, it's really hard to believe he was that good on his first try at these sports. I mean to beat experts, come on! Hey, but I still love my Fonzie. But, please!

I always wondered if that Patrick guy who played Jacques was really from France, but an American who imitated a French accent, but really was from California.

That accent was SOOO phoney - right from the start you can tell; the frnch use a silent "H" so when Jacques says "I was blessed with a superior sense of HHum-aire" he shoulda said it like "oyuu -- maire"

I guess with the belt thing - i was confused, I remembered thinking the Fonz saying he got a black belt in something - i just never thought that it was for fencing!!!

Also shouldn't they have had fencing mats/lights/point-keepers(or the scorekeepers, whatever I'm not a fencing fan)

You know it wasn't that bad of an episode, but there were a lot of stupid goof-ups, and stuff that didn't make sense:

Why does the Fonz need to put on the jacket for the duel? wouldn't it make motion difficult?
why does the college fencing guy Fred Brill not referee the Fonz's duel instead of Al? we know that Fred is there - he was sitting on the far left in the 3rd row, and he's the one that hands them the sabers... for that matter who's watching Arnold's - Potsie?
the whole switching places helmet thing - this had to be the only time we see the Fonz carry a helmet into Arnolds
you can clearly see Fonzie's hair and the back of his head in the fencing mask - was Jacques obnoxious AND ********?
at the end of the duel when Richie comes up to congratulate the Fonz those jeans he's wearing look kinda long and baggy on him - wait a minute those are the much shorter Fonz's jeans ?
that black T-shirt the Fonz wears, I don't like it. When did he switch from white to black shirts anyways?

I miss the earlier EP's when Arnold's was a DRIVE-IN and they ate outside in their cars...

My understanding was because Henry Winkler had gained weight & a black t-shirt made him look thinner.

#140 - Chachi's Incredo-wax

This was a great one!!! KingIstillgotitJack and I were rofl about all the goofy stuff that wax did- this was prolly my fav episode for chachi (that and the one where he was selling ties)

Potsie as Buckwheat, Potsie in the Ten-gallon hat, Potsie with the moofed-up munster hair - how could you beat that!?!

The only part I didn't like was that this was the episode where they decided to let Al be the piano player - I always get ticked off when I see people pretend to play an instrument, and Al and his "whirliing dervish" was just ********. Al was good as the Sheik .... but when they started talkin about the "foreign investor" my heart skipped a beat thinking maybe they were gonna bring Arnold back as a "special guest star" - BAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!

#139 - Mork Returns

OK , this one shouldn't even COUNT as an episode, it should actually be like #138.2 - I loved Mork and all, and the Mork from Ork ep was one of my favs, but there was what, 5 minutes of original scenes, the rest was just old clips.... when I was a kid watchin this I felt ripped off, and I felt just as ripped off today.

#147 - Richie's Job
this one was good, Richie gets a job at the Milwaukee journal making $2.25 an hour loading newspapers onto the back of a truck - not exactly his dream job (he wants to make cub reporter)

I think the best part was Ralph and Potsie in the UWM mascot Charlie Cardinal outfits!!!! I gotta find some pics to post of that

The opening scene where Mr C is bawling Joanie out for not being dressed properly makes me think that I can vaguely remember some other scenes that were cut out - I'm certain that I remember this being the one where Joanie and Mr C have a blow up over the way she dresses, and shes says somethin about what Jenny Picalo wears and gets sent to her room again.... anyone remember this?

Did you notice that some scenes from these episodes are deleted, depending on whether you watch WGN or TVLAND? For Example the latter has the scene in Ritchies job in which Rich takes the family out to dinner, but WGN cuts it out. I don't know of any deletes from "Joannies Dilenma". I wonder if Fonzies advice in his office to Rich would work in real life. I think most companies would appreciate Fonz telling Rich to be a team worker before he is a star.

Rich: There are implications

Joannie: yeah & tonight I get to find out if they're true!

Remember the Alamo!

#143- Shotgun Wedding

This was the 7th season premiere, which originally aired as a 2 part crossover with a back-to-back episode of Laverne and Shirley.

I really missed the Laverne and Shirley second half - I only get HD on WGN, so I doubt I'll get to see it anytime soon, but from what I remember, it puts the syndicated Ralph and Potsie as doctors ending to shame.... Laverne and Shirley were at their classic best though

#144 - Chachi Sells hi Soul

gee they had'nt done a silly fantasy ep in a while have they? This ep did have some really funny bits (my fav was when Random turns the kissing girls into Potsi, Ralph and Al!!! :D ) - but the whole crossover thing with the Angel Random was baaad - what was the name of that show anyways? Does anyone even remember that show at all? The only thing anyone remembers about that show was its place as a bit of HD trivia.... :grr:

#154 - The Mechanic

this was one of those "issue" episodes :( - Fonzie hires a mechanic in a wheelchair, and can't bring himself to fire the guy, even though he's a complete turd and is drivin the Fonz nutso.

Y'know, it never bothered me when HD tried to give us a message, as long as they kept it funny. This one was sorta a downer in my book, I dont even remember seeing Ralph & Potsie at all in it, and there were a couple of parts where they actually made the Fonz look dumb:
- when Chachi tells Fonzie that he has to write an autobiography and the Fonz asks "who's it about?"
- when the Fonz is talking about the problem and he says " I'm not saravoyant"

obviously meant as jokes.... but really came of a little flat :( what did you think?

#155 - They're Closing Inspiration Point

(you know, I was really hoping more people would come in here to discuss these - or any other episodes, I also just wanted to make sure any of the less obvious things I notice in some of these EPs are documented here somewhere...)

This was a great episode - they brought back a lot of the feel from the earlier seasons - although I think they coulda broken down and done a couple of outside shots, I mean geez, they were still a top-ratings show, they couldn't fit it into their budget to go on a little field trip???

I loved the fact that when the Fonz ccomes into Arnolds with the sign, his is just an exclamation point

(! - and the parts with the cement blocks on his feet and where hes draggin the boulder on the chain were hilarious....

they shoulda brought back Officer Kirk, actually they shoulda had him in more episodes - every hero needs a nemesis to battle...

Ralph makin out with LoriBeth for the "short dramatization" was hilarious "what? you want it to look realistic don't you Rich?"

#148 - Richie Falls in Love

This was a weird one - at the beginning of the episode, Richie is with LoriBeth, but upset with her about being forced to dress up as Humpty Dumpty for the Homecoming Parade (??!??!)
- so he goes to the bar at the Pfister Hotel, which didn't make a lot of sense to me in the first place, and orders a rootbeer. So when a woman comes in and coincidentally orders a rootbeer, this somehow changes his whole life (??!?!!!?).
If i were rating these episodes, which maybe I should, it'd be easier than going into a long diatribe over the bad ones... I'd giv it a '4' outta 10

#167 - Ralph's Family Problem

This was the 7th season finale, and it was a tough one for me personally, because (without going into too much intimate detail) - my parents were going through a nasty divorce throughout most of my childhood... so I understood how Ralh felt, probably moreso than Don Most did at the time.

Still, it was a good episode, i love seeing Jack Dodson as Mickey Malph, another GREAT charater they shoulda had on more often
Ralph: "What's yellow and goes 'click-clack'?"
Mickey Malph: "A ballpoint banana!!!"
The editing of the episode sucks on WGN as usual; when Mr Malph first comes into Ralph and Potsie's apartment they go from him saying as an optometrist he's "Busy, busy busy" to "try these on" with the fake nose and glasses - you miss the entire joke, and have no idea where Potsie went, or what happened with the ATO pagent thing???

robyrob
10-03-2003, 11:23 AM
A couple of notes about that ATO thing:
- and that would be their fraternity letters, Alpha Tau Omega) - I have no idea if that is consistent or not, I just wanted to make note of it...
- they mention the year being 1961 several times in this episode,

- trivia note - the pageant winner is Ellen Sweeney

Actually "Ralph's Family Problerms" was made after "A Potsie is Born." We see scenes from the old Arnold's in the former.

I think my favorite from that period is "Father & Son" in which Ritchie & Dad try to become buddies. The problem is they weren't meant to be that way. Mr. C has a real problem trusting Rich who is in his room with the cake girl & lets Potsie & Ralph know about it. Doesn't it seem strange that it would be that way, since Rich was the perfect son who never drank nor smoked?
By the way what happened to Lori Beth in this one? I assume she was still Rich's girlfriend.

#149 Fonzie's a Thespian

this is the one where Marion's theatre group is putting on a benefit production of "the Rainmaker", and their star, Sloane Marlowe hits on Marion, gets slapped, insults her and Fonzie scares him off, so ends up replacing him in the play.

Some of the best parts:

Potsie (after Richie explains that he has to review his own mother in the play): "A writer shouldn't have parents"

the Fonz's 'chat' with the creep-
Fonzie: *knocks on stage door* "Uh-Oh, who could that be?" *punches fist through door* "It ain't opportunity!"

Riichie: "No-no, a chat is just threatening, a discussion is hitting"

Fonzie (on acting): "But that's Shakespeare - anybody can do that!"

I believe that there actually was/is a Pfister Hotel andother buildings IN Milwaukee, and you are correct, the name DOES show up in MANY episodes, also it was in quite a few episodes of Laverne & Shirley, and as you mentioned Fonzie's girlfriend's name.

Of course, all of this doesn't EXPLAIN much, i have no idea why, other than it actually IS a popular name in the real-life city of Milwaulee....

I've always wondered if "Father & Son" might have been a sequel of sorts to "Burlesque." The reason I say that is because at the end of "Burlesque" Howard learns that he will be installed as the Grand Poopah of his lodge. However, in Father & Son the installatation actually takes place. I always have liked Burlesque, though some have criticised it. I thought Irv Benson was very funny. I notice he was on Johnny Carson a few times. Did he pass away later? I don't remember him on tv besides HD & the tonight show.

Irv: By the way the girl is crazy about me. You know she knocked on my door for 4 hours & I finally had to let her out! He's talking about Cassandra Peterson who we know as Elvira.

#152 - King Richie's Big Night

Richie gets crowned king of the Delta Gammas (?) at the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, but when Bullfrog slips something in his drink, he turns on all of his friends....

I thought this was a pretty good ep - they played a couple of good songs (Hello, Mary Lou, and Let's Twist Again) had a good story and a couple of good jokes.

A few of my fav parts:

Ralph and Potsie yelling "fix! fix!" after Richie wins...
when richie comes home in his underwear - with FLIPPERS!!
Marion: " Now you see why its so important to always wear clean underwear!"
Bullfrog stuck in the pooltable
Richie's head stuck in the cup

robyrob
10-07-2003, 10:33 AM
I did think that Richie's "freakout" was kinda a little unrealistic.... i mean we have no idea what was slipped in his drink, but it wasnt even 2 minutes before it hit, and I still can't believe that Ralph and Potsie didn't grab him and stop him there; if it were one of my friends acting like that I'd know SOMETHING was wrong and get him outta there

Rich had no idea the next day that anything had happened the night before. I know some pills can affect one's memory. The highlight for me was when he aplogized to his friends for what happened anyway. His friends apologized too & didn't need an explanation. That's true friendship! I'm not sure if I would have that kind of faith in a friend like that. Fonzie really straightened things out in this one & should have smashed Bullfrog's face into the side pocket, but was too cool for that.

That's one of my favorite episodes. Potsie and Ralph or even Lori Beth should have realized he acted a little strange, they should have thought Richie wasn't acting right. Ah and Fonzie, what a friend. He handled the situation, as usual. And Richie's head getting stuck in the trophy, what a embarassment. But it was funny. I missed that episode. I can't watch much of HD anymore, so it's mainly from memory.

i forgot to mention it for the Potsie/Anson Williams lovers out there...

in #152, Potsie sings "Hello, Mary -Lou" and "Let's Twist Again"

and on a side note they once again mention that the year is 1961.... i think they were building us up for the shock to come:

#151 - Joanie Busts Out

(hey - i just put my comments here in the order that I see them- which is the order WGN shows them :( )

this is the one where Joanie decides she has to prove that shes not a kid anymore.... so she goes to model for the photographer that Chachi works for ....the NUDE photographer

i loved this ep - Ralph and Potsie were hilarious, Richie was nuts, and the Fonz played it cool !!!

The important trivia note here is that this is the episode with the "new Joanie" - in the middle of this episode is when she gets the poodle perm :(

10-08-2003, 05:22 PM
I like that 1 too. I like all the HD episodes! What does Joanie say 2 Chachi when she comes into Arnold's? I liked Joanie's hair. I think the funniest part of the 1 where Richie gets drunk (#152) & asks Chachi 4 a drink & he pours his drink into Richie's pocket. LOL for both. Speaking of 152, doesn't it remind you of the episode of "Three's Company" where Jack (John Ritter) gets something in his drink & he says "swing w/me mama" or something like that. That episode's really funny. Those flippers are funny. How 'bout the episode where Richie, Fonz, Laverne & Shirley (their 1st episode) go 2 Richie's house & he tore his pants & knocked over the lamp. I luv the girls. The one where they go camping & run into L&S & Carmine, Edna, Frank, Lenny & Squiggy. & the other camping episode where Richie blows the whistle & drivers Fonz crazy. & the 1 where Fonz, Chachi, Roger & Potsie go to the place after Fonz & Ashley broke up & C, R & P get locked inside. Makes me think of another "Three's Company" episode where Jack & mr. Furley (Don Knotts) get locked in the freezer-it also happened to Greg & Bobby on "The Brady Bunch"

#156 - Here Comes The Bride Again

The kids want to hold a second wedding ceremony for Howard and Marion's 25th anniversary

This ep was GREAT!!! soo many hilarious parts - and it sorta reminded me of the last episode, with the wedding and all...

I loved the part when Howard is getting ready to propose and the Fonz tells everyone to get in the bathrooms, then when theyre alone in the dark and Howard is trying to talk, Ralph comes in and keeps interrupting them :D

The wedding guys - Cross and Crawford who don't listen to any of the answers to their questions...
Richie: "what's that clown doing?"
Cross: "a cartwheel"
Crawford: "why dont you like clowns?"
Chachi: "you fired the clown - what's next - you beat up the tooth fairy?"

Mr Burqhart (the neighbor) *shakes fist* "I'm gonna fix your wagon!!"
Ralph and Potsie in their too small tuxedos....
Fire Fighter (with hose) *puts out fire in bathtub where hamburgers are badly burning as they barbeque*

Fonzie: "this is the strangest wedding I've ever been to"
Cross and Crawford: "thank you."

Trivia bits:
Howard's first visit into Fonzie's "office"
Elvis' "Now or Never" plays as the Fonz enters Arnold's

At the closing, the Fonz says "I hope that we're all still here 25 years from now when the C's do this again" - 25 years from the original airdate would be December 18th, 2004

OK - i was curious about the "special guest stars"...

"The Bob and Ray" radio show, from 1951 to 1953, starred Elliott and his long time sidekick Ray Goulding. Elliott appeared on a number of other television programs including "Happy Days", "Newhart" and "Bob & Ray, Jane, Laraine & Gilda" in 1979 (with Goudling, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner).

In 1990, Elliott portrayed Fred Peterson in the Television series, "Get A Life", which starred his real life son Chris Elliott, who also played his son in the show.

I like the interview between Rich & Bob & Ray in which Rich sucks on a pillow! The ministers are always one step behind whatever Rich says. I laugh whenever I hear it.
Rich. We were thinking of 30-40 people in the back yard.
Bob- Do you have any idea how manhy guests will be coming?
Ray-that's an important question.

#153 - the She-Devils

one of MY favorites (I know I say that a lot, but I was waiting for this episode for weeks!!)
Al gives Richie, Ralph and Potsie new jackets for the band, and they are - PLAID :D (on a side note: Al says that he has to go back out to the car to unlock the trunk because Clarence the cook's hand is stuck in it - is this the first mention of Clarence the cook?)
The She-Devils come into Arnold's to find nerds for their nerd-party contest, one of them sees the jackets: "Looks like a test-pattern"

Again Richie forgets about LoriBeth at the drop of a hat - although this time he tries to resist because she's only "gone for the weekend".

Some of my favorite lines:
Ralph: "Have you heard about my watchdog? I said attack - so he had one!"

Potsie: "Well hello, hello, hello - my name is Potsie Weber..."
Big Bertha: "NEXT!"

Richie: "Who do you have in that sack?"
Potsie: "Maybe it's Big Bertha's lunch"

Fonzie (as Artie): "is this a party? Did I miss the cake? I have to calm doown or I'll get a nosebleed"

Fonzie (as Artie): "I was collecting snails for my snail circus"

Fonzie (as Artie): (after tearing sink that Chachi is chained to off wall) "do I have to pay for this outta my milk money?"

Yep, as great as iI remembered it!!!

Do you ever imagine yourself in an episode of HD? I do in this one! As Fonzie I might have said to Bertha: "I know about what Chachi did to your kid sister,Rhonda. Disgraceful! I'm gonna personally talk to him & if he doesn't straighten up I'll personally shave his head! Woa!" Chachi dumped Ronda which is why the she-devils got him.

Don't at least 2 of the girls look familiar? One of them played Potsie's girlfriend in a camping trip organized by Rich. Another was also in the commercial by Howard that featured Hank Aaron.

#166 - The Roaring Twenties

This was the one where Howard's Uncle Joe comes to visit and tells Richie the story about great-uncle Cecil Cunningham who was a district attourney during the prohibition period in the 1920's.

I liked this one, the only singing parts fit (Joanie and LoriBeth as flappers singing some cornball thing about "Pat my back big daddy") with the story and the characters the gang played were great. Al as The Bear - "give him a hug", Fonzie as "Spats", Ralph as "Purvis the jumpy assistant DA", Potsie as ...what was he again?, Mr C as the owner of the speak-easy., Mrs C as his puritannical drum-beating wife, and Joanie as their daughter....

It really looked like they had a lot of fun doing this episode, it had some funny parts, i should gets some quotes, if i have time.

I always have liked this one, but the show ends with Uncle Joe giving Rich a cookie. But I know there's a scene that comes later that I haven't seen since the show was on. It's where a piece of pie is missing & Joe asks Howard how it was, & he says it was delicious. Also, Joe explains that his family moved west with no husband, & Joannie asks how that was possible. the show really ends where Uncle Joe reveals he is teaching a new dance-the tango. Don't you just hate it when the network deletes parts of show to fit commercials in? I wish someday there could be a HD special that could contain some deleted scenes.

I think Potsie was "pretty boy" & Rich played the DA who closed a speakeasy owned by someone who looked a lot like Howard.

The problem was that musicals were sorta popular around that time (Grease, I don't even want to think about any after that one) so I assume that the producers felt that they HAD to do a few musical episodes, even if most of the HD cast weren't really very musiical/singing/dancing inclined...

and sad to say wayne, but I know that I don't have any special deleted scenes, and we probablay wont ever see them unless HD comes out on DVD...

#159 - Hot Stuff & #160 - The New Arnold's

This 2-parter is a pretty important milestone in the series, it marks a change in the look and feel of the show. When I see the episodes with the new Arnold's I think of KC, Jenny Piccalo, Joanie with the poodle-doo, Chachi's bandana, Roger and (blech) Flip. The episodes were pretty good, but the jokes got dragged down by the seriousness of the plot at times.

My fav part was Fonzie and Al destroying the cake arguing over where everything should go and Fonzie's exit: "I'm not leaving without my table!!!" *grabs handful of cake and storms out*

Important point that I noticed - the whole argument about whether to rename the place "Fonzie's" or "Big Al's" was instigated by Potsie!!! - hmmmmmm....

Chachi was irresponisible throwing his apron like that. Boy was Fonzie ticked. I do like what they did to the girls bathroom, really nice. In the guys bathroom, did they keep the 'air dryer'? I don't remember seeing it too much. Fonzie's 'office' was cool. It was sweet of Al. And the spatula was a sweet gift from Fonzie to Al. Times were changing, a 60's look for Arnold's. New characters, some forgettable and new looks.

I can only imagine how different it might look. What was Arnolds address again? Someplace on Lake Drive according to "Ritchie Branches out."

Well in my world Arnold's would still be Arnold's. I would have made it into a diner. Here where I live diner's are very popular. We have alot. 50's and 60's music would still be playing on a jukebox.

#157 - Ah Wilderness

the one where the guys go on a camping vacation and Ritchie wants to be the leader....

I liked this one a lot.... lots of jokes, change of scenery, new characters - I just noticed that Ralph's date, the retainer-bound, lisping Susie Simmons was played by Julie Brown, who starred in a bunch of hilarious movies, including Earth Girls Are Easy !! - of course, Ralph ran over her when he saw the bear...

Potsie had some good ones in there too, forgetting the matches and the can opener -
Fonzie: "You know that we're gonna open them with your forehead?" (the cans)

Why does Ritchie get so power-mad when he gets his hands on a whistle? I can understand him feeling competitive with the Fonz, but the decisions he made were really sort of bad, and the whistle was destined to be his downfall :(

your thoughts?

I'd hate to see Arnold's as anything but a restaurant... and the best idea that I'd like to see with it would be a retro-style 50's diner - what could be more fitting?

Here's an observation about "Ah Wilderness": Rich enters the house obviously in pain from the limp caused by Fonzie throwing a rock at him. How can Rich be much of a help unloading any truck with a bad leg? It seems a bit inhumane of the Fonz to insist on Rich's help. Sure Rich wasn't used to being a leader & didn't know anything about tents & should have brought food along. But Fonz did apologize, in a way, for not being good followers & saying Rich might have a been a better leader.

Another one of my favorite episodes. It cracked my up every time Richie wanted to 'rally' everyone up by blowing the whistle. Very funny. Potsie and his girlfriend, I could have smacked everytime the 'ahhh' each other when they thought one of them was bringing the matches or can opener. I did feel sorry for Richie, he wanted to be the leader instead of Fonzie. He did get carried away, but he ended up doing a pretty good job. I thought too that it was a bit mean of Fonzie to insist the Richie help out with the unloading. Gee the poor guy gets his foot bruised and he had to walk 12 miles around trip getting supplies. Give him a break.

It all shows how easily people can get caught up in their own pursuits and forget about other's feelings - gee did i learn something from HD?

I'm not sure if the Fonz was punishing Rich by making him help unload the truck - I think it was more of a gesture of comraderie... so they could do it together

#161 - The Hucksters

Howard comes back from the Hardware Convention and decides that he needs to do a TV commercial....

This was almost like a throwback episode - if it weren't for Joanie's poodle-doo, you could almost see this episode fitting into the 3rd season.

I love their "famous slogan" that Richie comes up with for the first commercial: If you want hammers, or nails, or wrenches, or pliers, or bolts, or screws, or electrical outlets...."

Warren Berlinger was great as Mr. Vanburen, the Ad-guy, I love his sayings: " throw it out on the back porch and see if the the cat licks it up"

Ditto for Sparky Marcus as Billy: "What is this, show-and-tell? Gimme the glove!!!"

I love the part where Howard plays Iggy the stockboy, and the Fonz' s line is classic: "I belong everywhere"

Marion: Who are we?

Howard: I'm Iggy!

#162 - Allison

Howard gets an erroneous bill from the electric company, and Richie and the Fonz go to try and sort it out when the Fonz falls for a deaf girl named Allison.

A pretty good episode, but it seemed a little strange when I first saw it years ago - Allison was played by the same deaf girl who was on Sesame Street

My fav parts:

Howard: "What are you gonna do If I don't pay? ...You'll shut the power off? - I'd like to see you try BUCKO!!"
*Joanie turns off the lights*
Howard: "I'm sorry for yelling"

When the Fonz is first trying to pick up Allison by snapping his fingers all around her and she doesnt even flinch, then Richie starts writing a note for the Fonz, and the Fonz uses hand signs for "drive" and "eat" and she nods and they leave with Richie still dictating....

At Arnold's, when the Fonz says he's going to Inspiration Point, and Potsie asks "With Allison?" - and the Fonz says "No, I thought i'd take Ralph"

Some of the Fonz's made-up sign language was hilarious, I thought Henry did a pretty good job of it :D

I didn't even mind the way they closed the storyline, with Allison accepting Doug's marriage proposal, I didnt really want to see a recurring girlfriend for the Fonz - and they didn't make him look bad the way they did it. :)

Fonzie really liked this girl enough to learn sign language. That was really sweet. #163 - Fools Rush In

This is the episode where Joanie and Chachi officially "hook-up". I always liked the way Joanie put Chachi down all the time in the earlier eps - those put-downs and comebacks were classic, so I was never a big fan of the J&C thing. I remember the way Scott Baio was getting plastered all over the teen magazines at the time, and the producers of the show wanted to cash in on that I guess.

I thought it was cool that Joanie was talking to Rich as Chachi was talking to the Fonz, and their plans were actually working against each other :) It was strange that Ralph wasn't in thise ep at all, yet LoriBeth WAS
Richie (to LoriBeth): "Don't let the fat kid hold my ice cream!!"

Al gets his 2 cents in: "Sorry Chach - I'm busy saturday night..." (after Chachi gets invited over for dinner by Joanie :)

Joanie is babysitting for Potsie, and Kathie and Scottie Marshall guest-star as Potsie's niece and nephew.

#169 - Live and Learn

Fonzie goes back to school as an auto mechanics instructor.
This is the first episode of the 8th season in this cycle on WGN.... goodbye Richie and Ralph - hello Roger and Jenny
I'd comment on the opening intro, but really the absence of Ritchie says it all...

For some reason Mother Kelp is upstairs with a sprained ankle from trying to fix the aerial on the roof, but they dont show her in this ep - i guess shes just there to drive Marion nuts.

Fonzie comes back from a vacation in Itally, with a full beard - it sorta looked like a "Hollywood" beard to me, I wonder if it was real?
Chachi: "You bought a beard"
Fonzie: "I didn't know the Italian word for razor, so I kept pointing to my face, and they kept feeding me"

The Fonz gets his letter telling him that he gets to be the new auto-mechanics teacher at the highschool - I never had a problem with him working as a teacher part-time, I know some people did, but I really think that the realism didnt matter, because the kids in his class were so funny :)
I didn't like the way they made him sound stupid so often though
Joanie: "You start tomorrow, that doesnt give you much time to prepare your curriculum"
Fonzie: "What's wrong with the way I'm dressed?

Kid in Class: "I know, I'm tardy"
The Fonz: "I don't care who you are - you're late"

I thought Eugene was a great albeit small addition to the cast, he was so funny with the Fonz
Eugene: "But I dont have any friends"
Fonz: "I know.

The Fonz (guessing Eugene's name): "Fletcher? ....Lowell? ....Eugene?"

The whole class thing was funny, especially the part where he had the entire class standing in the corner :rotflmao:

I was sooo glad he shaved off the beard in this episode, it was just too weird, man

I suppose it was important that Fonzie helped a kid and got his apple at the end of the day.....

#165 - A Potsie is Born

(I know I'm workin backwards here, but I did have a few points to make about this one, and wanted to hear what everyone thinks about this episode in general)

Potsie gets an audition to sing at the swanky Vogue Terrace... and turns into a swelled-head in the process....

As I was watching this, I kept thinkin I recognized Loretta, the girl Potsie was tryin to impress - its Gail Edwards !!! I loved her as Dot on "Its a Living" and as Six's mom on "Blossom" !!!

Potsie was hilarious in this ep, he was able to be stoopid Potsie and oblivious to how much of a jerk to his friends at the same time :)
The band plays "Surfin' Safari at Arnold's when Mrs Pattison "discovers" him,
the bit with Mrs Pattison:
"Come to the hotel for an audition, how's Friday at noon?"
Potsie: "You name it - I'll be there!"
Mrs Pattison: "how's Friday at noon?"
Potsie: "You name it - I'll be there!"

The part where the Fonz comes in all messed-up lookin - he and Mr C saw the billboard giant-sized Potsie

Ralph had a few choice lines, and got to practise being Potsie's flunky...

At the audition the gang plays "Mack the Knife" while the judges ignore them... the Fonz has a "talk" with them and stcks up for his"boy"

It was strange, but the sign behind the band clearly spells his name as "Warren WEBBER" - not that they cared who he was anyways, but they DID make a sign...

My favorite part in the whole ep was Joanie saying:

"You'll be in a room covered with rubber on the walls.... bing BING BING !!!"

(that was from Riccochet Rabbit - one of my fav cartoons !!!)

Some people don't like the later episodes, I like them just fine, I mean they're different, but theyre good in their own way.... :) - I think I'm getting dizzy 'cuz its the first time I've seen Jenny Picalo in a looong time

This ep was sorta reminiscent of the one where Richie got his car in the first season.... not a lot, but there were some similarities :)

It was nice to see the way the Fonz and Mr C made up at the end, and the way Joanie 'fessed up for the Fonz :)

ahhh my fav funnies:

Fonz (in Joanie voice): "Dad, can I have a car? "
(normal voice): "And he's gonna put you in your room 'til youre forty."

Jenny: "If daughters always listened to fathers, the human race would never reproduce"

When Mr & Mrs C go to see the Music Man movie (the one that Ron Howard starred in as a kid  )
Marion: "I just love that little freckle-faced boy"

NosyLadyinLine: "If I was your wife I'd feed you poison"
Howard: "If you were my wife I'd take it." :rotflmao:

Joanie: "Yeah, I think this is punishment enough."
Howard: "Think again"

with lines like that - how could anyone say the writing was going downhill?

I liked this episode, even though I missed it. Fonzie looked so cute in his robe. I also liked the way Mr. C and Fonzie made up, a Kodak moment.
Howard can be such a cut-up, I love his line:
NosyLadyinLine: "If I was your wife I'd feed you poison"
Howard: "If you were my wife I'd take it"

Howard wants to cool down the romance between Joanie & Chachi and they end up getting stuck in a motel after sneaking off to a Beach Boys concert.

This was a weird ep I thought - its hard to watch them try to include Richie in the episodes through letters....
Richie (in letter): "I've included a picture of me with my G.I. haircut"
Marion: "Oh Howard, he looks like a cantelope!"

Richie (in letter): "I applied for the position of camp paper editor, they put me on latrine duty. The guy they made the editor used to be a plumber"
Howard: "That's the army"

The part where Howard tries to kill Wilbur (the date that Howard found for Joanie but turned out to be a creep) was hilarious,
Marion: "I've never seen your father run before, look at those little legs go!"

I dont know who the motel guy was, but he was annoying.
Chachi: "It just so happens that we belong to a religion that forbids luggage"
I liked where Chachi tries to sleep on the desk! (what - no bathtub?)
Its hard to believe that they made such a big deal out of an unmarried couple staying in a motel room together....

Chachi trying to hide the ladder from MrC: "I uh, I just came by to, er, ah paint your house"
Mr C: "There's brushes and paint in the garage, you get started, and I'll check on you in about an hour"

I always wondered how much they paid LoriBeth to be in the last five seconds of an episode, with no lines or anything, just to sit there and look like she's another piece of furniture....

I never could figure out why L.B. was in the opening credits after Rich left, it seems redundant. Before, she was only a guest star & wasn't in all of the episodes. Which was actually the 1st episode made after Rich left? Was it "Live & Learn?"

I think Mr. C would have had a heart attack or stroke. Fonzie wasn't too thrilled about it and especially when he found out the girl was Joanie. And the L.B. thing was kind of dumb. She kind of annoyed me anyway. The one scene in an earlier episode where she needed $800 to fly to Greenland, why didn't she at least get her parents to pay half.

I dont have my ep guide handy, but I just watched the Thanksgiving ep yesterday, and the one where Ralph's parents are getting a divorce today... (yes, that's how I plan on spending Thanksgiving - I havent seen an episode in almost 2 weeks since the move)

The Thanksgiving ep was cute, but got a little to corny for my tastes; did they need to beat the whole "-yee" and "eth" thing to death? - i mean we got it already man, they're in the New World!!! I think that they were just trying to make a light-hearted, fun holiday ep and they didn't put a lot of thought into it.

My fav part was Ralph and Potsie as Bear-slayer and (?)Wolf-Tracker !!!

Bear-slayer: "Here, Keep your rat"

I've talked about the divorce ep before, and my parents divorce was the reason i became a tv junkie at that time, so it is always a difficult ep for me.... what are your thoughts about it?

animalcrackers
11-28-2003, 08:00 AM
I watched both too. The divorce one was okay. The Thanksgiving one was pretty funny. What was it that Potsie, I mean Bear Slayer, said that he and Wolf Stalker didn't put their traps in the woods because they were afraid of the animals, so they put on the road. That's when Joanie stepped into one. What about Howard and Richie's hair?

i always loved Jenny Piccalo, such a great character, this has got to be one of my favorites with her - Phil Silvers is great as her dad Rosco Picalo, they should've had him on more often

favorite line -

Howard: "Where is your wife?"
Rosco Picalo: "Rosalind is out in the car"
Howard: "Why don't you invite her in?"
Rosco Picalo: "She's changing the tire!"

I'll do one:
WGN
2O1: Hello Tough Guy

In this one Eugene takes Jenny to a rather sleezy restaurant with Joannie & Chachi. Eugene is trying to impress Jenny, but has little luck until the big dude & Eugene mix it up. Jenny squirts mustard & ketsup all over the dude. Fonzie walks in the room after the 4 leave & thanks the dude for putting on the act. It ends with Fonz & the dude arm wrestling. One wonders whether the dates know the fight was really a set up. It seems Jenny knew about it, but Eugene thought he really got the best of the dude -what was his name?-

You can get TVL in Canada but I live in the country so it's harder to get. So it's coming in 04'. But Dejavue is awesome. I don't have it but I've seen it. I would say it's better than TVL but it's really great.

2O2-SOUTHERN CROSSING -WGN-

Fonzie & Al go to the south to join in the "Freedom Riders" convention. On the way they meet a black fellow named Charles who invites them to a "whites only" restaurant. At first things are a bit uneasy. Of course prejudice was quite big in the south in the early 60's. I liked the scene in which the waitress finally pours the black fellow some coffee, & her boss decides to keep her. Fonzie bangs on a wall & the "whites only" sign comes down.

What's interesting is that we never see the guys at any convention. We can assume that they went there & carried signs & everything. One wonders if Charles could be blamed for be a bit spectical of having his folks invite their white friends over for the night.

I never would have thought Al was the kind of guy that would go to a "Freedom Riders" convention, but it's cool that he did. I thought it was funny when the Sheriff came into the cafe and the owner pointed out the black kid and the Sheriff made a crack about it ( I can't remember what he said, I'm writing from memory ).

watching the ep where Eugene gets help from Chachi and the Fonz to try impress Jenny Picalo, some great lines in it:

Fonzie (after trying one of Al's gumballs from antique machine): "Its amazing what seventy-five years can do to a gumball"

Chachi (to Jenny after Joanie knocks out Eugene): "I think he's dead"
Jenny: "How can you tell the difference?"
