I could read you post and everything you mentioned in it is true. However, that's no excuse for being unable to read/write. Far too many people - both in America and in Britain - leave school without being able to read and write properly and I think this is unacceptable.
Our school systems are going to hell and noone seems to care. It makes me sick. What the hell are my taxes paying for when our schools are still falling apart and and an alarming percentage of pupils are leaving school without a decent education?!!

Somewhat off topic but, indulge me if you would, please. A couple of mornings ago I went into a coffee shop restaurant to have breakfast. It was around 11:30 AM. The place was practically empty (the breakfast rush was over). Granted, I was distracted with my thoughts when I came through the door so I didn’t see the, ‘please wait to be seated’ sign. So, I seated myself at one of the numerous empty booths available.

After sitting down I noticed that the waitress who was responsible for that section spoke - under her breath - to other employees who happened to be standing at the register, which was right in my view. Then I noticed that they kept looking at me while they were talking. So, figuring that they might have been talking about me, I listened in and I overheard then.

Turns out that the waitress had made a stink about me because I seated myself. A derogatory gang up conversation went on for a while about it. Through most of it I wasn’t sure they were talking about me. I was trying to read my newspaper, and, besides, it seemed unbelievable that they would be ragging on a customer in his or her hearing range, especially since I hadn’t done anything to deserve their ire.

Finally, though, one of them said, “Maybe he can’t read”. Then the lady who said that looked right at me and, to her consternation, noticed that I was looking right at her with, I’m sure, quite a disapproving expression written all over my face. Then I heard her say, “Oops”.

She and the others left the scene after that. Moments later I got up to leave. First, though, I looked around if there was a sign about waiting to be seated since I didn’t see it on the way in. It was there allright, but it was just a chalkboard with ‘today’s specials’ and such mixed in with it. Besides, hells bells, Man, the place was practically empty so what was the point of waiting to be seated.

Anyway, their conversation was all strikingly rude, and totally unprofessional behavior. Not to mention unnecessary.

While I was looking for the ‘don’t seat your own damn self’ sign the waitress showed up with the coffee I had ordered. She stopped to ask me if I was looking for something. I told her that I was leaving due to the rude conversation I’d witnessed by her and the others. She looked startled and dumbfounded, turning a few shades closer to white. Then I left.

I cannot recall many times that I have been, or anyone else that I’ve witnessed has been, treated as rudely as that.

That does sound impolite of them. It wouldn't take a lot for one of them to go over to the table and point to the sign and then politely explain to wait next time you come into the restaurant.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when people talk behind your back within your hearing range. I understand that behavior in elementary school, but in the work place? People make mistakes, so what? No-one has to talk behind other's backs about it.

I agree :( sadly two of my uncles can't read, and they can write to an extent. They were never taught properly how to read and write, which baffles me cause my dad and aunt(my uncles' older siblings) went to the same school and they read and write just fine.

It saddens me :(
