Fred Dryer was Sam and Jerry Van Dyke was the Coach like it almost was? I don't know if they wanted to cast other people for other roles.
Sam?

Jerry Van Dyke would have been good.
But then Woody would probably never come along.
So, I think its best the way it is.
Fred Dryer - blah

I couldn't imagine any one other than Ted Danson playing the role of Sam. He was perfect for the role. If Fred Dryer would have gotten the role I don't know if it would have worked out. No one will ever know. Same with the coach.

Could you imagine Ted Danson in a guest starring role on Cheers as Sam's ex team mate? LOL

Yes, they actually wrote that role for her.
Well Jimmy Glen and Les ahd already seen wendt acting when he was on taxi. When it came time to cast George was the first person they had thought of. They were already keen on giving him the part but still held auditions anyway. John tried for it and was turned down. But on the spot right there he created the character Clifford Clavin, and was hired for a few episodes but eventually became a regular. Wendt at the time of filming Cheers was also in the middle of another sitcom "Making the Grade". But it fell apart so Wendt became Norm full time on cheers.

I think it wouldn't have lasted cause Ted Danson has that certain thing about him that made him stand out from the others. Ted has a quality that made Sam Malone seem just like the right guy I really don't know how to explain it. But its just like Christina Appelgate sp from MWC had.
