Blaine suspends himself over Thames river without food for 44 days

LONDON (AFP) - US illusionist David Blaine, a self-styled modern-day Houdini, started his bizarre quest to spend 44 days and nights suspended over London's river Thames with nothing but water to sustain him.


The madcap New-Yorker is planning to live for six weeks in a plastic box measuring seven feet (2.1 metres) deep, seven feet long and three feet wide, with no distraction, communication or food.


Blaine, 30, entered his tiny temporary home suspended over the Thames Friday at 9:27 p.m. (2027 GMT) and is not now due to emerge until Sunday October 19 at 9:00 p.m.


"I'm not worried about the first three weeks, I'm worried about the second half of this when I start to lose my mind and everything gets really bad," Blaine said shortly before entering the box.


Up to 4,000 people turned out to see Blaine begin his gruelling challenge.


The showman took a photograph of his late mother into the box with him for inspiration.


"I am just pushing myself to be the most that I can. That's all I can be," Blaine said.


Doctor Adam Carey, who carried out a physical examination of Blaine just moments before he stepped into the box, said: "From a medical point of view, I cannot condone it.

"From a personal point of view I think he's nuts."

Hes got tubes in there to go pee and tubes for water... They have a service where you can watch him live inside the box with a camera in there... 4.95 a month though, on some forums talking about it, its like breaking news if he goes to the bathroom "OMG DID Anyone see him just go to the bathroom!"


Of course he has a blanket to cover himself when he goes so people don't actully see it ;)

I really don't see the magic that's involved with his stunts. As far as I can see he's just going "look at me, I'm gonna do something stupid!" When does this magic kick in? He keeps talking about his training... I thought magicians never gave away their secrets (Houdini never did) :p
