1. Natalie
2. Blair (I don't agree with everyone that Blair and Jo are ONLY good together. I liked Blair in the first season, too)
3. Beverly Ann
4. Jo
5. Tie - Mrs. Garrett and Tootie
7. Pippa
8. Andy
9. George

And even though Andy and Pippa are way down there, I still like them. The only one I really don't like at all is George. Basically, Natalie is first, Blair is second, Beverly Ann is third, and everyone else is tied at 4th except for George who is 9th.

I didn't realize Natalie was that low on the totem pole for you; interesting.

Natalie was a huge part of the show's success. You could always count on Mindy to deliver the laughs.

And yet, Charlotte bringing her on the show seemed to cause NBC execs to go into panic mode, with the "too many girls for a girls' school" BS. She seemed to upset the delicate balance they had, and just four episodes later, Felice was demoted from "co-star" to "living wallpaper", and Julie Anne would never again have an episode all on her own, without assistance from Julie.

Part of me has always wondered if Julie Anne and Felice would have been shafted if Mindy hadn't been brought on board. It makes me wonder if this is why Molly felt intimidated: Charlotte's hand-picked girl was starting to get more lines than the first girl brought on board... and more lines than her.

(Nancy being brought on board seems to have sealed Julie's fate).

Of course, Mindy herself had nothing to do with any of this; she didn't know network execs were insane, and blaming low Nielsen ratings on "ten, twelve girls" instead of on the lack of promotion and the bad time-slot. Yet part of me mourns for the loss of Felice and Julie Anne because of Mindy being brought on board.

Ah, interesting.

Well, you're kinder to the producers/writers than I am. I say she was already relegated to living wallpaper before the series even started. She "co-shone" in "I.Q.", and that was it.

I also still blame Sue Ann for having a lot to do with Nancy's demotion. Once the writers found that "frienemies" rivalry with Blair and Sue Ann, it's like they took them exclusively as "the older girls" and left Nancy hanging out to dry.

But can you be relegated to living wallpaper while also "co-shining"? "IQ" was her last hurrah.

You raise a good point; for the next nine episodes, "the older girls" seemed to mean "Sue Ann and Blair". Nancy was allowed to talk on the phone, or zip up her jeans, but wasn't allowed to be in Blair and Sue Ann's clique. But a good part of that blame lies at Blair's feet: don't tell me Blair the Manhattanite was originally intended to be the one running out to the stable to take care of Chestnut the horse, when she earlier had an aversion to barnyard animals! I have always felt the writers changed that episode to suit NBC... erm... suits, who wanted more Blair and Tootie in every scene.

But can you be relegated to living wallpaper while also "co-shining"? "IQ" was her last hurrah.

The other 3 episodes of 1979 have her as living wallpaper. She was already LWP status by the time the series started, allowed to only contribute significantly to a story for one episode---and having to share the spotlight, at that. Before and after "I.Q." she was unfortunately LWP.

It's like prison. They say you're allowed 30 minutes of outdoor exposure for exercise in one day. Felice was "locked away", and allowed one episode for "play time" in one season (but not even on her own shoulders).

don't tell me Blair the Manhattanite was originally intended to be the one running out to the stable to take care of Chestnut the horse, when she earlier had an aversion to barnyard animals!

Well, yes, I will tell you that.

I have always felt the writers changed that episode to suit NBC... erm... suits, who wanted more Blair and Tootie in every scene.

I'm not saying you're wrong, and I see where you're coming from. But Blair was the richest girl there, so of course it would be completely plausible for her to have her very own horse, and have it brought to her private school, with no qualms from the headmaster. As far as the upper class are concerned, horses are a different matter altogether than barnyard animals.

Depending on your fan interpretations/desires, you can go in either direction with this question.

But Nancy gets a good scene with Blair and Sue Ann in "Like Mother, Like Daughter", taking part in the fight over Blair's dress. She hadn't become living wallpaper just yet.

And there's something Kim says in her book which has led me to believe that. Have you read that part?

You raise good points, but the stable scene just doesn't strike me personally as a Blair scene: Blair is caviar and country clubs, not rabbits and horses. It is telling that after this episode, we never hear of her horse again... unlike her three Harvest Queen wins, her doting parents, her skills at painting, etc.

As you say, the interpretation is up to the viewer.
