Bill Cosby felt it was time to call it quits. True or False?

Bill Cosby wanted the show to only run for five years, not eight years. It should have ended in 1989, but someone wanted more. Had it gone Bill's way, Olivia, Martin, and Pam would never have been "born". Denise would never have come back, Vanessa and Theo would never have gotten engaged/graduate. Winnie and Nelson would never have seen past the age of one, Sondra and Elvin would have still been in the wilderness store, and Rudy would still have to be cute.

I think what actually happened was that the Simpsons came along and kicked Bill & Co.'s collective butts...

I think the show ran its course long before any of this stuff happened...Sondra and Elvin were always very, very lame characters, and naming their stupid kids "Winnie" and "Nelson" was soooo bad....Rudy ceased being cute a long time before the show ended, although she's a beautiful girl today, and Raven was totally obnoxious...don't even get me started about "Pam"...

The show had run its course , it started to fall in the ratings but it was Bill Cosby's decision to end the series.

I think people put too much emphasis on that. It only happened one time and both shows were in the top 10 for that week. The Simpsons did not finish in the top ten for that year, but Cosby did.

Five years is average for sitcom life. After that the freshness is gone and storylines tend to be recycled. That was why Carl Reiner wanted to do The Dick Van Dyke Show for only five years. Those five years the writing remain fresh.

Interesting, I didn't realize that ThomasE...in fact, I've seen SO many shows that attribute Cosby's ratings decline directly to the appearance of the Simpsons on Thursday nights...

Also, regarding 5 years being average life of a sitcom, it's somewhat interesting to note that, in the olden days, a series would typically do 39 episodes per season (Leave it to Beaver, 6 seasons, 39 eps/season, total of 234 episodes). Now they do maybe 20 or 22 per season...Five seasons used to mean 190-200 episodes, now it's basically 100...laziness, pure and simple.

Wait a minute... Cosby Show was on Thursdays right? Well wasn't Roseanne on Tuesday and Wednesday Night? If so, it didn't directly compete.

I saw the clip from the last few minutes of the final episode in Italian from the Italian "Cosby Show" website. I used to have the copy of the series finale in english and I erased it.

well, you have to remember that in 90-91, Fox didn't have the stature it has today. The Simpsons did take a good number of fans away from Cosby. I watched it at the beginning of the 90-91 season, but started losing interest fast (IMO, the last 2 seasons of Cosby are almost as bad as the last 2 seasons of Roseanne) and by 91, Simpsons and 90210 was my Thursday viewing, NOT Cosby and Cheers.

The last 2 seasons, A Different World actually ranked higher than Cosby in the ratings, mostly because by seasons 7-8, Cosby had lost all the charm and "cuteness" that made it the smash it was for the first 6 seasons. Plus most of the cast didn't even appear in most of the episodes the last 2 seasons. It was almost like there was a massive paycut in production that they couldn't afford everyone. Tempestt only appeared in about 1/3 of the episodes in seasons 7 and 8 and many of the other missed many episodes too. A lot of people also dislike season 6, but I loved Denise/Bonet, and that was basically "her" year, so I loved season 6.

i think that bill wanted to end at season 5 because it was doing every well with ratings and have it end on a good note.

The last season of the Cosby Show was the worst.

Which is weird.... cause I liked Dabnus.

I think Dabnus finally gave somebody for Cliff to be a friend with.

he was never really that close with either Elvin nor Martin.

Bill didn't want to end it after the 5th season. But he said he SHOULDN'T have continued the show after the 5th season when he announced that the 8th season would be the last.

my favorite seasons are 1 and 2.

I've heard the song "If I Were a Bell" by Miles Davis. That song was used at the end of the final episode of "The Cosby Show". I have that song from the album "Say It Loud: Black Music in America" and also from the album "In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk", the album I don't have. It was featured in the musical "Guys & Dolls".

Andy Griffith fealt the same way about the Andy Griffith Show. He originally only wanted to do 5 seasons, but wound up doing 8. Although the ratings remained high, I don't watch TAGS after season 5. IMHO, I thinks TAGS went south after season 5.

I remember season 7 was supposed to be the last, I remember when the season started, many articles said it was gonna be the last year... but then Bill decided it was still a top 10 hit, so do one more year

It probably should've ended because season 7 was when it all went downhill IMO

It went downhill when Ugly Pam joined the cast.

I like the later seasons better than the first few season, and I LOVE the running joke in the last season with the door bell. Ding - thump. Ding - ZZZZZZZZAP!!! LOL. And I also like Dabnus, he is such a great character! I also really like the whole Denise / Martin relationship, and I like Olivia too. Pam isn't as bad as some make her out to be, IMHO, but I think that it would have been better if she wasn't in it as much as she was. The first couple of seasons were funny, but in comparison to the later season, I don't think that they were that great. I can't wait for Nick at Nite to run back through them again, as it just jumped back to season 1 tonight.

Dabnis was great. I wasn't too crazy about Martin.

I saw the final episode the other night. I thought it was good. I just started watching this show but I really didn't care for the last couple of seasons. There were so many people coming and going from that house I thought the house would collapse. Watching the early years of the show for the first time, I cannot believe the difference between the first few seasons and the last couple of seasons.

I started watching the show when it began on N@N and I thought that the whole show was great, but because Denise was my favorite kid on the show, I didn't like any seasons without Denise. So basically, I only liked seasons 1-3, 6, and 7.

But I still liked Pam, Lance, and Charmaine. I thought that they added alot of funny moments to the show. And I also liked Raven-Symoné as Olivia, I thought she was just as adorable as Rudy. Come on you have to give Mr. Cosby some credit, they needed another "cute, little kid" for the show.

I have seen every "Cosby Show" episode, I believe, and when I saw the last episode, there were 2 things that I absolutely loved: the opening sequence [which showed all the characters changing through the years like roseanne's seasons 8 & 9] and i loved claire getting shocked by the doorbell! That's what she gets for being so mean to Cliff!!

Why did they need a little kid when the show had already been on the air for 7 years? Why go backward? All the huxtable kids were older so it made since to me to move forward.

because it's funnier to watch a sitcom with a little cute kid in it!!!!!
if there were just the grandparents and pam and stuff...and no little kid...it would be sooo boring!!!!!but because of olivia,it's not boring!!!!!i love all the eps with her in it!!!!but of course also the first seasons!!!!

Actually, the show wasn't just meant for "grown ups"; Cosby and the cast said so themselves. If it was, there wouldn't be alot of kids on the show. TCS is a family show for everyone to watch, including kids. And I agree, the kids brought more life to the show. If the show just had a bunch of boring old people on it, its ratings would have fallen because alot of kids used to watch that show, and still do. Why do you think no one liked the grandparents? But the Kids were older. It was nothing wrong with moving forward with Rudy being 12, Theo being 20, and Vanessa being 18. Why add 3 year old?

The last 2 seasons are alright, but nothing special.

Season 6 was OK.... but Season 7 was when the show began to die.
Olivia and Pam were the worst things to ever happen to the show, Martin was tolerable -- but not necessary.

TCS shouldve ended at Season 6.... or done Seasons 7-8 the right way, without the unneccessary characters.

I just didn't like Olivia. She was Rudy II. Not only that, but Rudy wasn't annoying...Olivia was annoying!!!

I think Rudy was better. Olivia wasn't appealing at all to me. Rudy was more natural in her demeanor and her behavior.

One thing I didn't like was that in the last 2 seasons I guess because the cast had grown so much they virtually never showed everyone in any one episode anymore yet Olivia was in almost every single one and her exchanges with Cliff usually had absolutely nothing to do with advancing the plot.

Until I came to this site I never realized that there was such a passionate devotion to Raven Symone.

Less would have been more with this series. Although I like all 8 seasons it would have been better if it ended in 1990 when it was tied for first place with Roseanne. Cosby would have left people wanting more.

I have to agree with that. That would explain the arrival of many kids to sitcoms in the later years, when the other kids were all grown up. It would explain:

1. The arrivial of Nicky and Alex to Full House
2. The arrival of Billy to Who's the Boss?
3. The arrivial of Olivia to The Cosby Show

Anyway, I think after Season 4 the show started to slip.

So, I ask it again, how do you think the show WOULD have ended if it ended at season 5 and what do you think the finale would have been about at that point in the series?

If it ended in 1989 I guess they would have had Denise return from Africa for the finale (that is if Lisa Bonet had her baby and was up to working at the time). There were no major events at the time: Theo was a freshman, Cliff had already turned 50, Sandra and Elvin were already parents, neither Rudy nor Vanessa were grauating or going through some major change like puberty so I suppose it might have been just another episode or maybe a clips show. Maybe Cliff and Clair's 25 anniversary or something like that.

In some ways I wonder if the creation of "A Different World" is partially the reason the show lasted longer. Of course I am not positive about that as I don't remember how long we saw "Cosby Show" characters on "A Different World".

OLiva was no rudy clone, it was something ODD about Oliva. She was nothing like Rudy.

I guess I should rephrase that. I think maybe Cosby wanted to the show to go on because of A Different World. It seemed like for a while the two shows were very close and in some ways intertwined (sp?) with each other in the episodes.
