- "ABC's NFL Monday Night Football Special Kickoff Opener" Puts the Network into a Dominant First Place on Thursday Night in Viewers and Young Adults

- ABC Posts the Strongest Numbers for Any Net on Any Night This Summer, as the Opening Game of the 2003 NFL Season is the No. 1 Program of the Summer


Thursday Night (8:00-11:00 p.m.)
"ABC's Monday Night Football Special Kickoff Opener" (9:07-11:45 p.m.) between the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins attracted an average audience of 19.2 million viewers and a 7.7 rating, 23 share among Adults 18-49. ABC dominated Thursday night, beating second-place CBS by 4.5 million viewers (16.4 million vs. 11.9 million) and by 83% among Adults 18-49 (6.6/20 vs. 3.6/11). The Network posted its largest margin of victory on Thursday night in at least 12 years - since at least September 1991, which is the start of Nielsen Media Research's electronic database.

* ABC drew the largest audience and highest Adult 18-49 rating for any network on any night this summer (5/22-9/4/03). Additionally, the opening NFL game of 2003 qualifies as the top-rated television program of the summer in viewers and young adults.

* Excluding the night that the Net aired the Michael Jackson interview (2/6/03), ABC logged its best Thursday night performance in 20 months in viewers and young adults - since its coverage of the 2002 Rose Bowl on January 3, 2002. The Net posted triple-digit increases over what it has been averaging on Thursday night this summer: Total Viewers +183% (16.4 million vs. 5.8 million) and Adults 18-49 +230% (6.6/20 vs. 2.0/6).

* Compared to the 2002 season average for the "Monday Night Football" franchise, the Thursday night 2003 NFL opener was up by over 2 million viewers (19.2 million vs. 17.1 million) and by 7% among Adults 18-49 (7.7/23 vs. 7.2/20).

* The "NFL Kickoff Live" concert on the National Mall, featuring performances by Britney Spears, Aerosmith, Mary J. Blige and Aretha Franklin, drew an average audience of 9.3 million viewers and delivered a 3.8 rating, 13 share among Adults 18-49.
