With Three's Company's British roots, I had always assumed that the character was also named "Jack Tripper" in the original "Man About The House", and that the name was a pun on "Jack T. Ripper". Both men were obsessed with sex, although Tripper went about it in a far nicer way. ;) What I found out on IMDB today, though, was that the lead male in Man About The House was named Robin Tripp. Of course, the producers of the American version could have picked the name "Jack Tripper" for the same reasons...
So ... was "Jack Tripper"/"Jack T[he] Ripper" an intentional pun? Or merely coincidence?
