THE ABC TELEVISION NETWORK AND DON MISCHER PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCE FIRST ANNUAL "REALITY AWARDS"
Premiere Edition Airs This Fall as Two-Hour Special
The ABC Television Network and Don Mischer Productions today announced formation of the First Annual "Reality Awards" that will honor network and cable primetime reality and alternative series and specials.
The first "Reality Awards" ceremony will be presented on ABC this fall as a two-hour special. An entertainment industry blue-ribbon panel of nearly 200 people will choose nominees, and television viewers will vote to determine final winners using an internet balloting system. The show will contain prestigious categories such as "Best Series" and "Most Memorable Moment," but also categories with a sense of fun, such as "Best Twist."
Award-winning producer Don Mischer, now preparing -- for his eighth time -- the "Primetime Emmy Awards" and with vast career credits as the producer of large-scale live productions, will be executive producer of the new "Reality Awards," working through his company, Don Mischer Productions, in Los Angeles.
Said Mr. Mischer: "The impact of reality television is undeniable. According to the Neilsen ratings for the 2002-03 season, six of the top 10 network series are reality-based programs. And this will be a fun show, as we recall some of the biggest reality moments in primetime -- from the funniest to the scariest, the sexiest to the most scandalous."
"Television networks strive to create programming that dominates the conversation around the water cooler. And some of the most talked about shows of the last several years are reality TV," said Andrea Wong, senior vice president, Alternative Series and Specials for ABC. "An awards show will give reality fans the chance to see their favorite people and most memorable moments celebrated on one show."
The first annual "Reality Awards" will cover programming that aired in the 2002-03 season, including through the summer of 2003.
