Yep, I like their older stuff a LOT better.

But I'll have to say Madonna.

you can be heterosexual and like Cher. If you like Christina and Mariah and never have to worry about what people would assume about you, then the same would go along with liking Cher. I know gay people who love heavy metal music. If you like an artist, why worry about what someone will assume about your sexual orientation. Because if I know gay metalheads... I'm sure there's plenty of straight Cher-heads.

yep. I know heterosexual men who like Culture Club, Pet Shop Boys, Village People and Bette Midler, and gays who are into death metal and hate "divas" and dance music. Musical taste doesn't dictate sexual orientation, who you sleep with (or if not sexually active, whose pinups you have on your wall) dictates your sexual orientation, lol.

Cher by a landslide. Madonna is a stunted fruit of the MTV tree who destroyed popular music with her churlishly sacreligous videos, which served to hide her tinny voice, her asinine lyrics, and her utterly useless synthesizer "arrangements." She fooled a nation (and a world) of pop culture Moonies into thinking she could sing or dance. She became an icon with ABSOLUTELY NO TALENT to back up her status. Cher at least can sing and act.

Attention, all you Madonna fans who tihkn your heroine is the greatest entertainer of all time -  SNAP OUT OF IT!

I vote Madonna, but I also love Cher.

I disagree with whoever said they don't like Cher because it makes them look gay. Musical taste doesn't determine your sexual orientation, who you sleep with determines that. I have a friend who worships Barbra Streisand and is turned on by women. And another friend who listens to nothing but hard rock and heavy metal, yet he's queer as a three dollar bill. I knew yet another guy who was very straight yet his favorite music acts were Pet Shop Boys and Culture Club... yet he liked women. Musical tastes have nothing to do with sexual orientation at all. Liking a Cher song isn't going to suddenly make you want to make out with another guy.

out of curiosity, have you heard any Madonna songs after 1990? With all the real hacks out there like Britney, Hilary, Avril, J-Lo and co., why trash Madonna? Ray Of Light was a better album than ANY of those will ever get to record.

Yes, Madonna's nineties songs are better than her eighties songs.

And I'm sure Ishtar is a better movie than Heaven's Gate. So what's your point? :p

critics who hated Madonna in the 80's came around to her when they realized that unlike most "mainstream pop chicks", Madonna actually dared to push the envelope and challenge herself artistically. Now she is nowhere near the most talented female artist in history, but I do think as a "pop star", she's one of the greatest because she's remained relevant and has grown with every album. Her last cd was a letdown, but even then, there were a few great songs on it like Love Profusion and Nothing Fails.

She doesn't have a great singing voice, but I would rather have someone like her with an average voice who does great songs, and continues to grow artistically than someone with a beautiful voice like Celine (now Falling Into You WAS a great album IMO, but everything since has been blah) or Jessica Simpson or someone in that vein who has a wonderful range, but does by the numbers material.

Sorry, you won't convert me. I remain convinced that Madonna is a charlatan. Before she came along, you had to be good musician or a good singer to be taken seriously. Her voice and her "music" continue to make me want to run shrieking from whatever room it's playing in.

One reason I really despise her is becasue of her Most Popular Girl attitude, and her attitude that rock singers who aren't popular are a bunch of losers. She did intimate that about Elvis Costello, no? That's her yardstick of greatness: you may be an accomplished songwriter and arranger, but if you have no big hit singles, you don't count! The bitch!

I like Madonna's songs and sound better. I don't love any of Cher's songs except for a few she did with Sonny.

I don't get why people can't simply cast their vote and not rip the other one to shreds.

I'm curious when and where she said that. If I recall, Madonna (at least of recent years) has mostly been embracive of a lot of British indie music that is far from mainstream. While she has in the past actually trashed acts like Mariah and Whitney for "having a good voice but being in it for the money"

But still, why hate Madonna when you have hos like Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears who are much worse. Even if you hate Madonna, you cannot deny she knows how to make a great pop tune... whereas Britney and J-Lo have horrid voices AND make music that is terrible. Next to Michael Jackson, she is the most important POP artist of the last 20 years (before people bring up Nirvana and co... they're not pop), and unlike Michael, Madonna doesnt' have to rely on 15-20 year old glories.

I cannot stand Cher's music..musically I like Madonna's songs better, but when it comes to clothes..Cher rocks...one of my earliest memories is watching the Sonny and Cher and being in awe of Cher's gowns..Also I like Cher's no-nonsense attitude, and she is an excellent actress..so I say it is a TIE...

She once called alternative music "music that's not popular" and that Elvis Costello is alternative music due to "the fact that he's not popular." Alternative music, she said, is only good for making you think. Something she should do before she opens her mouth.

Madonna is an important POP artist? Yeah, well, that's why I like John Mellencamp so much. He never wanted to be no pop singer. ;)

You're right in that Maddie doesn't hae to rely on past glories. She can still rely on current glories like kissing Britney Spears on the mouth and giving Ben and Jen advice on their lovelife when they didn't ask for it!

and I love it when people who hate Madonna make the assumption that Madonna fans only like her and no other artist. I have nearly 2000 cd's in my collection, only about 20 of those are Madonna. I love Cher too, seen her in concert 3 times and have a lot of her cd's and dvd's. Because I'm a Madonna fan doesn't mean I dislike any other artist. So don't tell me liking Madonna has any effect on my opinion of Cher, because I think Cher rocks also, I just like Madonna slightly more.

But still, if you're going to state that Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears are more talented than Madonna, of course you're going to be attacked for making such a biased claim.
