View Full Version : "The Dead Pool": Which new Fall 2003 sitcom will be cancelled first?
The Zap2it website has a cool game that they put out every year which is very popular called "The Dead Pool" in which TV viewers get to choose which new Fall Season series will be cancelled first. The 2003-04 edition of this game begins tomorrow but, since I don't like waiting for anything, I say, why wait for tomorrow when we can start our own version here today on this message board? And so, I'd like to offer you this year's candidates but with one little twist. I am not including any series from UPN or WB since I figure most of them won't last too long anyway so what's the point? It would be like choosing an MVP from this year's edition of the Detroit Tigers. (You baseball fans out there will understand. The rest of you, keep reading.) So here is what you have to choose from. If you wish you could pick more than one series since Zap2it allows you to pick up to 3 candidates. But no more than 3 are allowed here, understand? Good! Here are your 12 contestants:
Arrested Development (Fox)
Coupling (NBC)
Happy Family (NBC)
Hope and Faith (NBC)
I'm With Her (ABC)
It's All Relative (ABC)
Luis (FOX)
Married To The Kellys (ABC)
A Minute With Stan Hooper (Fox)
The Ortegas (Fox)
Two and a Half Men (CBS)
Whoopi (NBC)
(The WB/UPN sitcoms: All About the Andersons (The WB),
All of Us (UPN), Eve (UPN), Like Family (The WB), The Mullets (UPN), Rock Me Baby (UPN), and Run of the House (The WB))
Here are my choices:
1. A Minute With Stan Hooper---That's about how long I expect this series to last. It stars Canadian comedian and instant series killer Norm MacDonald, whose last show ("Norm") was so bad that I feel it was indirectly responsible for ABC to bring back TGIF Fridays. The FOX network deserves him!
2. Whoopi---I hate Whoopi Goldberg and I wish her nothing but failure. The previews I've seen so far have been absolutely dreadful, in my opinion.
3. Luis---Any series with a heavy ethnic flavor is usually doomed from the start. This one appears to be no different.
On a happier note, the only new series that I would predict to be sure hits, and you may have your own opinions on this, are "Coupling", "Hope and Faith", and possibly even "I'm With Her" if it can get past the one-joke premise.

Sitcomwriter 08-28-2003, 05:23 PM I WOULD have said "The Mullets" and "Miss Match" but they aren't there so....
Happy Family
Married To The Kellys
Luis
*GoodMorningCalgary* 08-28-2003, 05:36 PM These are the ones I WANT to fail:
Coupling
Arrested Development
It's all Relative
But here are the ones I think that are gonna fail....
Married to the Kellys
Whoopi
Luis
TVJunkie101 08-28-2003, 06:01 PM Not that I want it to, but I think Whoopi will get canned. I think it looks hilarious.
Anyway,
WHAT I THINK WILL BE CANCELLED FIRST:
Arrested Development (Fox)
A Minute with Stan Hooper (Fox)
Coupling (NBC)
I think Hope and Faith will do good, at least I hope so. I don't really like ANY of the new sitcoms except this one. Last year had a better crop. All the dramas though, look pretty decent.
I have a feeling we may be seeing quite a few cancellations this year, probably even more than last year.
Pavan 08-28-2003, 06:10 PM Whoopi
Married to the Kellys (I think it will, though the pilot's clips looks great)
All of the new FOX sitcoms, since they are debuting in late October!
Every other sitcom I think has a shot
GoldenFamilyTies 08-28-2003, 06:41 PM All the FOX Shows
It's All Relative
I'm With Her
Brian Damage 08-28-2003, 07:00 PM It's All relative

The only good thing about "Norm" was his weiner dog, because I love dachshunds. Unfortunately, the beloved weiner dog couldn't save the show.
I have absolutely nothing against Whoopi, but I'll have to agree with Sal. The previews were sooooo dreadful, there's not even a word to describe how dreadful they were.
I'm a very skeptical person anyway, so I hardly ever watch a show from the beginning. It comes and goes so fast, I never get a chance to watch it, which is probably good because if it was that bad to get cancelled that quick, it wasn't worth watching in the first place.
Freakzilla 08-29-2003, 03:17 PM 1. Whoopi: The previews aren't very good. Plus, Hollywood Squares is much better without her.
2. Happy Family: The commercials they've shown are funny. But they don't show any of the actual show. So I don't know if it can rise above it's stock premise.
3. I'm With Her: A show based the premise of an ordinary guy dating a super-star actress. I don't think they could get much milage out of a premise that thin.
Special mention:
A Minute With Stan Hooper: I like Norm MacDonald and Fred Willard. I like the premise of a guy and his wife moving from New York to a small town in Wisconsin that's filled with crazy people. I think this show could be a big hit. But since it's on FOX, even if it's good, it could be the 1st show cancelled.
omalleyfan 08-29-2003, 04:27 PM I am a huge fan, but I have a feeling Whoopi will be first to go. I keep getting flashbacks to Bette when I see commercials for it
musicradio77 08-29-2003, 09:20 PM "Whoopi" is the first show to go out with a big bang. I saw Whoopi in the center square on the new "Hollywood Squares" on GSN since I didn't see it on Friday mornings while I was at work.
James 08-30-2003, 04:45 PM I could not find the Dead Pool link, but I think It's All Relative will be the first sitcom to be canceled.

You mean you hope. Will and Grace did a pretty good job, I'm sure 'It's all Relative' will as well.

I think this show will be great, too. And I agree that FOX will be quick to cancel it. I think that very few current shows are any good. But this looks like it might be a gem.
