The tragedy occurred on the date 9/11 9+1+1 = 11

Sep 11th was the 254th day of the year 2+5+4 = 11

The airplane that hit the north tower was flight 11

That flight had 92 people on board 9+2 =11

The airplane that hit the south tower had 65 passengers 6+5 =11

The twin towers resembled the number 11

In English the Expression "New Youk City" has 11 letters

It was a terrible day for America. I get a sad feeling when I see the Twin Towers shown in movies. I never noticed it prior to 9/11, but they are used as a focal point in so many movies.

Speaking for myself, the 9/11 tragedy affected me so profoundly, and if I live to be 100, I'll always have a deep sense of sadness about it. It takes anything to make me cry about it. This thread, writing this, a quick story on TV, an article--puts a lump in my throat. I'll never get over it.

Same here. I had just turned 16 when Sept 11th occurred...I will remember it for the rest of my life. :crying: It is, indeed, a day in history that should NEVER be forgotten. I agree with everything you said, Janice. Well done.

It is a very sad day in history. A lot of innocent people lost their lives. My father-in-law was in the Bronx at the time and was on his way to check out the Twin Towers that day. Then he saw the smoke and realized what happened. Then realized he was this close to his own death. :eek:

My Cousin was also in Brooklyn that day and was all mixed up in it but he escaped alive. Thank the lord I was lucky I didn't lose any one in my family. But my heart goes out to the families who lost their loved ones.

I was at school that day. During homeroom we got word that the twin towers had been hit. The rest of the day was spent watching TV in some classes. Then I got home and found out my grandfather had died in his sleep that morning. He was always watching CNN and after my aunt heard about the news she tried to call him because she knew he would be upset about another war, but he never answered. The day before he had had the best day, it was one of the few that he actually felt good.

My heart goes out to all who have lost a loved one on Sept. 11 whether in was in the attacks or not.

I had two connections to people lost on 9/11. I worked with someone who lost a brother. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, the company where everyone died.

My uncle's wife...her nephew was in the WTC for an interview and was killed.

Although, I didn't know anyone personally, I did still find myself sending two sympathy cards--one to my former co-worker, and another to my aunt.

My then girlfriend was on the phone to a friend of hers at the moment when the first plane hit the tower. Her friend is a doctor who was at a medical convention in NYC. They were talking on the phone when suddenly, she heard a terrible commotion on his end of the line. He said, "I've got to go," and she didn't get the whole story for several days, but his convention was accross the street from the towers. He spent the next few days pulling bodies and pieces of bodies from the rubble. He says that the period is just a vague blur in his mind now.

You're right, MonarC... it is really weird.

And like someone else said, I'll never get over it. Never. I read an article on it the other day (I forgot which magazine) and I just started crying. So sad that a nation could be shattered by an act so... devistating. I'll never forget that day.

I've often thought of those who are young, and I feel bad that 9/11 happened so young in their lives. My niece was 17. My husband's grandchildren all under 10.
I was 43 when it happened. There were some horrible things that happened in my lifetime. From the ages of 6 to 16, I saw the adults in my life devasted by the nightly news covering the Vietnam War.
This is somehow different to me....that one single horrific event occurred, and the young folks have to carry it around in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
I would have hated 9/11 to have happened when I was, say 16. People aren't fully mature in their teens, and it must make it more difficult to cope with the tragedy.

When I went to Ground Zero in March with my high school band, I cold barely handle it. I just wanted to start bawling. I thought I was gonna pass out just from the emotions and grief that were going through me.

Yes, I see what you mean. We were still growing up when Sept 11th occurred and you were already an adult in your early 40's.

Like I said in my first post, I had just turned 16 the month before, and just started my junior year in HS when Sept 11th occurred. Because I was 16 then and still really young, I'm going to be carrying that memory FOREVER whereas you won't be carrying yours as long because you're older than us.

In April 2002, I went on a trip to Washington DC because I was in the Close Up program. I got to see firsthand the side of the Pentagon that was hit on Sept 11th and it was just..Wow. At the time I went (more than a year ago), they had just finished rebuilding the exterior and were rebuilding the interior. It was so eerie. That reminds me - I took pictures too...They did a really patroitic thing - they had a US flag tacked ON the part of the Pentagon they were working on...

That is weird... I remember hearing about that a few days after it all happened. It doesnt feel like 2 years already. It sad. We drove my Ground Zero this past March, but by that time there really wasnt much to look at.

Oh wow. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I didn't know anything about it till school was over...(it was probably a week into 7th grade for me) My mom told me when I got into the car, and I didn't even know what the WTCs were. I remember waiting to pick my sister up and sitting outside on the swings, looking through a car window seeing a lady read the paper that said "Target: America". It was very scary. But to see it on tv, it was just awful. To see America getting attacked like that was awful. There was so much commotion about it, I didn't know what to think, except...what is this, WW three? Ever since then my dad, who is a correctional officer has been going to Albany almost every weeked to guard some of the important buildings there. And even to this day, I know it might sound weird, but whenever it's, say, 9:11 in the day or at night...I always happen to look up at the clock and it reminds me of it. And when you see the WTC in movies or they're mentioned in books, it alway a really sad thought. :(

It's not weird. It happens to me too, everytime.

I have a carton of Tropicana OJ in my fridge now that has an expiration date of 'SEP 11'.
Everytime my eye catches it, I think of that day.

I was in my European history class when it happened and my teachers father worked in the pentagon- I remember him on the phone all class, a ton of students in the hall on their cell phones trying to reach relatives that work in NY and DC. My best friend's dad was in DC, my french teacher had flown into Logan earlier that morning, and my cousin's were supposed to be flying out of Logan that afternoon.

The number thing is pretty creepy- I remember being in band when the first person mentioned that "hey...its the eleventh so today is 9-1-1..."

I STILL have my worksheets with the date 9-11-01 on them someplace...I remember writing a small journal entry in one of my notebooks during my free period and I put the date as "Tuesday, September 11, 2001".

This is so weird - I had a science project that was due on September 12th, the day after - it's back home with me now and the cover of the project (it was a leaf project) said "Due Date: 9-12-01". I had made the cover just two days prior, on September 10th, right before I went to bed...

That was a horrible day. I remember being in my 2nd period class when that terrible event happened.

Even at college, my roommate told me that he lived right down the street from the towers and he looked out of his window and saw the towers collapse. To see it on the news was terrifying, but to be right there when it happens has got to be down right traumatizing. :eek: :(

yeah that happens to me too. I think it's cause that number means something to everyone now. Before it was just a number you call in case of an emergency. That number will never be just a number ever again.

I've never really thought of that, but you do have a good point. I always thought of 911 as the number you'd call in the horrible situations of a murder, fire, mugging etc. But if you say "9-1-1" outloud, it's really creepy.

I remember the day after that, I noticed something very interesting in the early morning around 5AM. I looked up in the sky and noticed that the moon and Venus were very close that morning. Venus was halfway between the two points of the crescent of the moon. And it made me think, that's the symbol of Islam. The crescent moon and the star in the moon. Was that a sign from the heavens for the hijackers to attack? I've read that the Muslims are into astral signs and the moon, so it got me thinking about how to interpret the events and how to possibly prevent them.

I have a lot of questions as to who was behind 9/11, some ideas, but this conjuction of the moon and Venus (of course a planet) really made me wonder about the meaning and intent of Islam in this day and age.

I heard about it when i woke up that day... i was scared as **** before i heard the whole story. i was watching the news and it looked really serious, i was panicking. when i got to school we listened to the radio live from NYC and there was a lady on there screaming "MY HUSBAND WORKS ON THE 61ST FLOOR BUT NOT ANYMORE CAUSE THE 61ST FLOOR DOESNT EXIST!" and then her husband came out and she like "OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD MY GOD OH MY GOD!!!!" and she was breathing real hard and we were laughing cause she sounded like she was having a baby... lol... i thought alot about it throughout the day and when i got home i watched the news until i had to go to bed.

Thats fascinating.... We had a six week course on Islam as part of an honors world cultures course my freshman year. I remember September 12th before homeroom a bunch of us from that class sat around with our world cultures teacher and threw around ideas about the motives behind 9-11

I visited the site in Shanksville PA where Flight 93 went down. I reacted in much the same way as you mentioned above. My little girl couldn't understand why I was such an emotional wreck and you can't explain it to a little kid.

What was worse was that the local TV stations had cameramen there - about 20 of them, with those huge cameras who were literally IN YOUR FACE while you stood there looking at the field, or the angels, or reading the wall. (I was there the weekend before the 1st anniversary of 9/11). It was hard to digest what I was seeing, crying and having those fricken cameras in my face.

9/11 should be a National Memorial Day. NOT a Holiday. A Memorial Day.

Whenever I would come out of New England and heading south on I-95 into New York, while I'm driving past Manhattan on the NJ Turnpike, the towers were RIGHT THERE. The thing about it was they were so mesmerizing. Still paying attention to my driving but I also couldn't help but constanting looking at the massive towers. Just about couldn't take my eyes off them. Now nothing. Still really strange to see it that way now.:(:(

I can't believe it's almost been 2 years ago. They are rebuilding ground zero. I wonder what it will look like.

Remebering Sep 11th

It was first period when the first one hit, I was in history, there were some rumors going around, and our teacher was really not sure what was going on and proceeded on with the class, and then during second period we found out about the first one hitting and we turned on the tv in the room, we saw the second one hit, it was horrible, I started to cry a little, people were crying, my teacher had to leave the room :(


but I imagine it was somewhat the same feeling people had when Kennedy was shot, I mean in sense they found at school, work, and was just such a tragedy


I was in new york, in downtown manhatten a week earlier, it was kinda freaky, I was like, "Mom where are the twin towers?" and kept asking about them...it was weird

The last time I saw the twin towers was 9/5/01, my birthday since I was 23. When I was working at Gateway Industries, I was listening to the radio and I heard during the breaking news that a plane hit the 2nd tower of the building. During my work time without listening to it, I've never heard that another plane hit the 1st tower. During my break at work, I've heard that both towers collasped. When I came home that afternoon, I saw the news about the tragedy. I taped a full 6-hour tape of uninterupted news which goes on until Sunday night. The next day, I used to listened to music and events that happened on the old Rhythm 94.3 (aka Cool 94.3). CJ was the host of the "Morning Rhythm Show" which he played songs like "United We Stand" by Brotherhood of Man, "Ooh Child" by the Five Stairsteps and "Lean On Me" by Bill Withers. It also includes phone calls from friends and families in the Poughkeepsie/Kingston area. That was sad. I have a mixed CD featured songs in honor of 9/11. The songs are:

1. "Only Time (9/11 version)" - Enya
2. "Patriotic Medley (9/11 version)"
3. "Yesterday (9/11 version)" - The Beatles
4. "America the Beautiful (9/11 version)" - Ray Charles
