Forget about Mariah Carey for a second. Beggars Banquet is the album you should be listening to. You should hear it at least once before you die.

Maybe I shouldn't post while drunk.

No...it's a great CD and so is the movie. Have u even seen the movie? A lot of people that haven't seen it claim it sucks, which is very ignorant...so im just wondering. It wasn't the best movie but it beats a lot of the chick flicks that have done good!

I love Charmbracelet!!!
But I'd have to say my fav out of all of them has to be Butterfly. Cause it ment a lot to her coming out of a bad marriage and all. She felt free to be herself not controled by the devil... oops I mean tommy matolla. By the way Josh just ignore the haters.

"They can say anything they want to say, try to bring me down but I will not allow any one to succeed raining clouds over me. And they can try hard to make me feel that I don't matter at all but I refuse to fall to ruin what I believe or lose faith in my dreams"- Mariah

Tim, I'm sorry to hear that. Did you have to have professional counseling afterwards? I did. For three months. Sometimes I have "Glitter" relapses, but it's nothing a little lithium can't fix.

That's right! I forgot about Mariah Carey's nervous breakdown a few years back! It puts an ironic spin on my "I saw Glitter trauma counseling" joke! Thanks for pointing that out, Josh!

And why isn't mental illness something to make fun of? I'm clinically depressed and have anxiety disorder, both of which I'm seeing a psychiatrist for (but am taking as little as the prescribed medication as possible).

I say if you can't make fun of yourself, um... you can't... make fun of crappy singers who scream and whisper a lot.

Its so sad what these aritsts get credit for writing. IE: Avril(the anti christ) got credit for "co-writing" Complicated because she changed one word in the song. I think she changed "stupid clothes" to "preppy clothes". Oh, the talent.

Working Class Hero
(Lennon)

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so ****ing crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still ****ing peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Love Takes Time

(Carey/Margulies)

Hooo oa
Uhhhh
A yeah

I had it all
But I let it slip away
Couldn't see I treated you wrong
Now I wander around
Feeling down and cold
Trying to believe that you're gone

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

Losing my mind
From this hollow in my heart
Suddenly I'm so incomplete
Lord I'm needing you now
Tell me how to stop the rain
Tears are falling down endlessly
Ooh

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

You might say that it's over
You might say that you don't care
You might say you don't miss me
You don't need me
But I know that you do and I feel that you do
Inside
Ooh

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

God (1970)
(Lennon)

God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
I'll say it again
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain

I don't believe in magic
I don't believe in I-ching
I don't believe in Bible
I don't believe in Tarot
I don't believe in Hitler
I don't believe in Jesus
I don't believe in Kennedy
I don't believe in Buddha
I don't believe in Mantra
I don't believe in Gita
I don't believe in yoga
I don't believe in kings
I don't believe in Elvis
I don't believe in Zimmerman
I don't believe in Beatles
I just believe in me
Yoko and me
And that's reality

The dream is over
What can I say?
The dream is over
Yesterday
I was the Dreamweaver
But now I'm reborn
I was The Walrus
But now I'm John
And so, dear friends,
You'll just have to carry on
The dream is over

Excerpts from
I Found Out (1970)
(Lennon)

...There ain't no Jesus gonna come from the sky
Now that I found out I know I can cry...

...I seen through junkies, I been through it all
I seen religion from Jesus to Paul...

Excerpt from
New York City (1972)
(Lennon)

...Up come a preacherman trying to be a teacher
Singing, "God's a red herring in drag!"...

Excerpt from
The Luck Of The Irish (1972)
(Lennon/Ono)

...Why the hell are the English there anyway?
As they kill with God on their side
Blame it all on the kids the IRA
As the bastards commit genocide! Aye! Aye! Genocide!...

Excerpt from
Out The Blue (1973)
(Lennon)

Everyday I thank the Lord and Lady
For the way that you came to me
Anyway it had to be two minds one destiny

Grow Old With Me (1980)
(Lennon)

Grow old along with me
The best is yet to be
When our time has come
We will be as one
God bless our love
God bless our love

Grow old along with me
Two branches of one tree
Face the setting sun
When the day is done
God bless our love
God bless our love

Spending our lives together
Man and wife together
World without end
World without end

Grow old along with me
Whatever fate decrees
We will see it through
For our love is true
God bless our love
God bless our love

Well if you want to go all out and post lyrics. You have to at least be fair. That was a love song not about the working man. Mariah has a lot of great songs of encouragement. Not like you haters would care. But here is one of my favorites.

Make It Happen

Not more than three short years ago
I was abandoned and alone
Without a penny to my name
So very young and so afraid
No proper shoes upon my feet
Sometimes I couldn't even eat
I often cried myself to sleep
Still I had to keep on going
Never knowing if I could take it
If I would make it through the night
I held on to my faith
I struggled and I prayed
And now I've found my way

Chorus:

If you believe in yourself enough
And know what you want
You're gonna make it happen
(Make it happen)
And if you get down on your knees at night
And pray to the Lord
He's gonna make it happen
(Make it happen) I know life can be so tough
And you feel like giving in
But you must be strong
Baby just hold on
You'll never find the answers
If you throw your life away
I used to feel the way you do
Still I have to keep on going
Never knowing if I could take it
If I would make it through the night
I held on to my faith
I struggled and I prayed
And now I've finally found my way

Chorus

I once was lost
But now I'm found
I got my feet on solid ground
Thank you Lord
If you believe within yourself
Just hold on tight
And don't let go
You can make it
(Make it happen)

Chorus

I'd have to choose either Mariah or Emotions

I love her old music, but she lost me in the mid-90's when she went all J-Lo on us and started working with rappers all the time. I am not nor have ever been a fan of rap music, so I lost interest when Mariah started shoving that style of music in her fans faces.

Love Takes Time

(Carey/Margulies)

Hooo oa
Uhhhh
A yeah

I had it all
But I let it slip away
Couldn't see I treated you wrong
Now I wander around
Feeling down and cold
Trying to believe that you're gone

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

Losing my mind
From this hollow in my heart
Suddenly I'm so incomplete
Lord I'm needing you now
Tell me how to stop the rain
Tears are falling down endlessly
Ooh

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

You might say that it's over
You might say that you don't care
You might say you don't miss me
You don't need me
But I know that you do and I feel that you do
Inside
Ooh

Love takes time
To heal then you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
'Cause love takes time
I don't wanna be here
I don't wanna be here
Alone
Uhhoo

It's sad that the guy is very close-minded about music. If it's not by Bob Dylan, or any Beatle- then it must be crap. He also forgets that some of those people mentioned on the credits are producers- they are not getting credit for writing. Most of the time Mariah writes her lyrics by herself.

In his little small world, everything seems like it was written by a Beatle also. LOL... he compared Paul McCartney's "Waterfalls," to TLC's- which honestly, was MUCH better.

---

Whoever was asking about the Glitter album:

Unfortunately, the movie soundtrack did poorly as well. One factor could be that it was released on the exact day, September 11. The weird thing is that many people say that the album isn't worth listening to, and etc.- yet many CD reviewers praised the CD for being very creative. Rolling Stone called "Never Too Far," and "Love Will Lead The Way" some of her best work.

The failure of the movie led to the failure of the CD as well. The movie simply casted a big dark could over it. Glitter (the album) only sold 2 million copies WORLDWIDE (a big failure) and it led to Mariah being dropped from her big deal with Virgin.

I think Mariah has a beautiful voice, but to say she was a better artist than Lennon is blasphemous.

If Lennon lived past 1980, I highly doubt he would've ever enforce the likes of Ja Rule, Jay-Z and Puffy (yes, I hate rap, sue me) on the world like Mariah did... but then, he did unleash Yoko Ono onto an unsuspecting public. But still, I'd rather listen to Yoko than the rappers.

I dislike Mariah for the same reason I dislike Jennifer Lopez, they forget that their core fanbase are into pop (in Mariah's case, her fanbase was mostly Michael Bolton/Celine Dion adult contemporary loving adults) and then they shove rap music down the ears of listeners who don't care for that style of music. It was a sellout to those of us who liked her in the early 90's. Just imagine what rap fans would feel if Jay-Z or someone decided to ditch rap and go rock. That's how a lot of us felt when Mariah (and more recently J-Lo) decided to go all rap on us.

that is a copout though. Nickelback's album came out the same day and was a huge seller, and I also believe Enrique Iglesias' album came out then too. I think people were starting to get sick of Mariah, and Glitter was the culmination of a "backlash", while Charmbracelet has been her humbling a little more, and she's gained back some fans who had gotten more and more jaded by her 97-01 recordings.

Think of it similar to Madonna's Erotica album from 92, a lot of people had become progressively turned off to her in the early 90's, and the Erotica album ended up suffering because many people were sick of Madonna and her "sexual antics" in 92 (I wasn't, I always liked her), and then the next album wasn't a smash, but it did help win back some of the fans she had lost.

I wouldn't exactly call it a copout- because it does play a huge factor. The music on the Glitter album was very upbeat, and people at the time were turned off by that, as if the movie didn't do enough to do that. Nickelback's album didn't do that well initially either. Once people started to discover "How You Remind Me," that's when the album started to sell. Plus, their music was much more mellow (oddly.) Jay-Z also put out an album the same date, it debuted at #1, but it quickly fizzled out of the charts.

I know people who would rather listen to Britney than Dylan, but they would never go as far as to say she's better than Bob because they know that while Britney appeals better to them, that she really does not compare with Dylan.

Go into any rock board and say that Mariah is better (not you prefer her, but she is BETTER) than Lennon, you would be laughed off. Mariah's got some decent material, but as a whole, nothing she has done compares to the best of Lennon.

I don't care if a majority wouldn't agree with me. You seem to be saying that this is a fact, which it certainly isn't. There are a lot of people who would agree with me. It is an opinion both ways. In MY opinion, nothing Lennon has done compares to what Mariah accomplishes in a day.

well, I stated that because you used Mariah outselling Lennon as confirmation that she's better just because she sold more albums than him, and I was pointing out that with the same logic, than apparently BSB are better than Aretha, Nicks, Bowie (even if you aren't crazy about either, you do agree at least they're superior to Backstreet, right) and Dylan because just like Mariah has outsold Lennon, BSB outsold all of those.

Anyways, debating chart stats and album sales is useless because for many artists, their best albums may not be the best seller.

we all have our personal tastes, but to say that someone is better than someone just because they sold more albums or had more #1 hits is irrelevant because there has been some real garbage that has sold tens of million of copies, and there's been albums that everyone who heard it loved and might've only sold 300,000 copies.

Monar C never actually said she was better for selling more, moron. She just said the # of albums showed shows SUCCESS. And mariah is the best selling female solo artist of all time so just leave it at that.

god, defensive aren't we "moron"? I have my favorite artists too but I'm not going to attack someone because they don't like them. I mean, what has Mariah done for you to get so up in arms if someone dislikes her? She's not your sister, she's not your mom, she hasn't written any songs especially for you.

Mariah may be the best selling female solo artist of all time but that doesn't mean I am gonna think she's the best. It's not like Celine, Madonna and Whitney are so far behind her that they could never catch up. The four of them are within 10 million of each other, if any of them ever had a big blockbuster album again (highly unlikely tho), they could easily overtake Mariah.

Why am I not a big fan of Mariah?
1. I don't like the rap music she's shoved down our throats ever since Honey
2. she keeps remaking songs that frankly don't need to be remade. I know a lot of rock fans who have never cared about her one way or the other, but they hate her now for ruining Def Leppard's song. I don't mind her cover of Heartbreak, but I know plenty of huge Def Leppard fans who have gone as far as to send complaint letters to the band for letting Mariah cover their song. I also remember when she remade Against All Odds, she did a decent job with the song, but there are other Phil Collins songs that are less linked with him that you could cover. Mariah did a good job with the song, but Phil's version is a classic.
3. her fans trash every other female artist of importance to the extent that if you are a bigger fan of Celine, Madonna, Whitney, Janet or the like, that you pretty much want to hate Mariah for the way her fans act towards others.

If you like Mariah, good for you. But don't be a sheep. No artist is 100% great all the time. When I was a teenager in the 1980's, I used to think Madonna could do no wrong, even defended crap like Shanghai Surprise. Looking back I realize how blind I was. I still like Madonna to this day, but I can point out her flaws and when she puts out a subpar album or a really bad movie, I will be the first to admit it instead of trying to defend it because a "good fan defends". Early Mariah rocks (did you get that I stated that already) but if she puts out something that is decent, I'll like it, but if she puts out something I dislike, I will admit it's not any good, instead of playing the "well, any good Mariah Carey fan will love everything she did".

yea, and I apologize for my posts, so I apologize to you, Josh and Huntington.

I think it all went wrong when a rock fan posted against Mariah, because I do like Mariah (tho I much prefer her earlier stuff, I liked music of all of her albums. I own all her cd's except Butterfly, yes even Glitter) and I also like Lennon, but in all honestly, you cannot compare them, not because one is so much better than the other but merely that they are so different. When you think of Mariah, a rival would be someone along the lines of Celine, Whitney, Toni, or even (tho they aren't in the same vocalist league, but in terms of success and stardom) Janet and Madonna. And with Lennon, you'd think more along the lines of McCartney, Dylan, Jagger and co. Mariah and John are polar opposites in terms of music style that it's insane to compare them, because both are grade A for what they did.

So what's everyones favorite Mariah song in here? For me it's Underneath The Stars.

Well thx for the apology... The reason why we defend Mariah so much is cause she is a very unique person who has a very strong conncetion with her true fans. We feel as if we know her personally. A lot of her songs that you don't hear on the radio are very personal, so this is how we get so close to her. Also I have been a fan for a longgggg time. Ever since the begining. So I will defend her forever... :D

And your right you can't compare her to other artist in diff catagories. But sales do matter. That's what the majority of people like. She is up there with ELVIS and THE BEATLES and like it or not... That means she is better according to her album sales. The numbers don't lie... And if people buy alot of a certain album that you think sux... well that's just how it goes.

The truth is Mariah is a very unique person who has an amazing voice. She has inspired alot of the young girls who are out there today singing. And in my opinion she will always the the best female singer of all time...

Of course, Music Box and Daydream are the only two I own. I haven't listened to either in probably 10 years though. When Musicbox came out during my junior year of high school, I really liked it. I especially liked "Hero", "Anytime You Need A Friend" and her cover of "Without You".
