Depp Officially Offered Willy Wonka Role
The idea of Johnny Depp playing Willy Wonka is about to go from pure imagination to reality, as Variety reports that the actor is in talks to star as the ultimate candy man in Tim Burton's new adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Word has it that Warner Bros. has officially offered Depp the role, and it's now up to the agents and lawyers to negotiate an offer to the hot-again actor, whose Pirates of the Caribbean has emerged as one of the summer's biggest hits. Long considered a fan favorite for the role, Depp was something of a "dark horse" candidate, as reports initially had Christopher Walken and Michael Keaton – both of whom, like Depp, had previously worked with Burton – vying for the role, with Depp's name coming into play as development progressed. Shooting is expected to start sometime next year.
