View Full Version : What would you have liked to see them on?
dawsongirl 08-21-2003, 04:51 AM Take all four ILL stars...and Lucy's kids too if you want...and tell what show you'd like to have seen them on that they weren't. Comedy, Drama, Film, Game Show, SciFi...whatever.
For Example:
I think Lucy would have been funny on Hollywood Squares. The original with Peter Marshall that is.
Mickey 08-21-2003, 05:32 AM Remember how on Happy Days every so often they'd have some really famous guest star (usually somebody that British viewers didn't recognise, but never mind!)? They'd walk in and the audience would go nuts for five minutes, and the guest would stand there looking amused, waiting to say their lines! Well how cool would it have been if they'd had Desi or Lucy (well, both ideally, as a couple)?
My favourite of their guest appearances is probably Desi's star turn on Ironside (I love that episode). So to go along a similar vein, wouldn't it have been cool if they'd been around to do Diagnosis Murder?! Some cranky old couple who witness a murder, or get chased by murderers or something. I can just see poor Barry having to deal with the two of them and his father. :)

I'm not sure if Peter Marshall liked Lucy that much. I actually was in the bookstore flipping through a book about Hollywood Squares the other day, and it was written by the original host (I guess it was Peter Marshall). Anyway, he was explaining how Desi, Jr. was on there with his two other bandmates in the 60s and they had to share a square. Lucy came in and damanded that he be put in his own square, and when she didn't get her way, she stormed out. So he didn't portray her in the best light.
I would have loved to see Desi on "All in the Family." It would be so funny to see how Archie Bunker would react to that accent, the names he would call him, etc. Given the right script, it would have been hilarious! It would probably be the perfect guest spot for Desi, as he said in his autobiography that he loved that show.
Lucy would have been great on "Three's Company." Technically she was -- she introduced clips in one of those 'Best of...' shows -- but it would have been cool to see her as Jack Tripper's grandmother or something.
SPLAIN 08-21-2003, 09:55 AM WOW, great topic, but bad choices, i agree that Peter would have stopped Lucy from appearing on Squares, but that has to be the best choice for her, she adored game shows, and they would have written those snappy comebacks for her and she would have said anything and the audience would have gone nuts. Happy Days, another BAD choice as Tom Bosley also had a very bad experience with her. I used to see her as Mary Tyler Moore's aunt Flo, perfect part for her, finally sophisticated dialogue in a great ensemble cast and a great show with a small part for an older woman, keeping her busy, but not exhausting her and not having to carry the whole show. Or the mother of Diane Chambers on Cheers, or my all time dream casting, one of the Golden Girls. Desi as a regular on Alice, written by Bob and Madelyn, Lucy could have been his girlfriend or something, the ratings would have gone through the roof for that one. Lucie as the host of a daytime talk show, hey, even mom would have been great at that, i used to see Lucy as the sleuth in Murder she wrote also, then again, as you can see, i saw her everywhere. Desi jr was Automan for a while, but i don't know about him, all four would have been great in anything they tried.

LOL I could totally see Lucy& Desi guest star on get smart....
SPLAIN 08-21-2003, 01:51 PM Yeah, true, compared to some of the things she did on her shows, talking into a shoe or even in the cone of silence wouldn't seem so odd!
LucyFan 08-21-2003, 04:44 PM I would have loved to Desi on Here's Lucy. Could you imagine what the audience would think if Desi suddenly pop up at Carter's house claiming that Lucy was his long lost wife and that they had two kids together. lol, that would have been interesting.
Also, it would have been cool to see Vivian Vance have her own show entitled The Vivian Vance Show. Her show would take off where The Lucy Show left off thus seeing the character Vivian Bagley with her new husband and their problems.
Another thing that would have been neat to see would be Lucille Ball portraying one of the Golden Girls or being like the "fifth" one. Her character could be like related to Rose as her long-lost sister.
SPLAIN 08-21-2003, 04:57 PM Didn't you hear that Lucy was all set to play Rose's blind sister, but nothing came of it and another actress played the part!

Wow. Didn't know about that. Interesting story.
And yeah...kinda like a Sammy Davis Jr. appearance.
Brian 08-21-2003, 06:50 PM Some of you probably don't know about this show but it would have at least been interesting to see Desi Arnaz appear on the short-lived 1983-84 series "Automan", a show in which Desi Arnaz Jr. was a part of.
That Other Fan 08-21-2003, 07:58 PM "Lucy Goes To Broadway"
Had it been nearly as good as described in "The Lucy Book", it would've been great.
Lodee 08-21-2003, 09:27 PM What was the reason they gave for not making it? Wasn't it lack of time or Lucy was sick or something? It did sound like it would have been good.

That show is the bomb. SciFi from the late 70s, early 80s...damn good stuff. :D
I know... OT, but Automan battles the Hulk. :woohoo: Fun stuff.
SPLAIN 08-22-2003, 09:42 AM Desi jr might have given a role to his dad if it had been a comedy series, but a drama, how could he get him on a show like that without it looking like a pity invite? Yes, Lucy was too tired and sick to do Lucy goes to Broadway. By the time she was well enough to do it, she had her Lucy show to do!
