View Full Version : Christine and Kelly's relationship
Janice 08-21-2003, 02:59 AM Christine and Kelly got along so well. I think it's nice that they didn't have a stereotypical combative relationship. It would have been so easy for them to be jealous of each other and vie for Hayden's time and affection.
On many occasions, Christine would go to bat for Kelly with Hayden and Kelly would do the same for Christine.
The writers should be commended for not falling into the wicked stepmother trap.
Penny Lane 08-26-2003, 11:06 AM I agree with you Janice! I love those two characters. The writers are to be commended!:D Although the friendship between the two would get to Hayden sometimes. He could be a really big baby!
catlover79 12-26-2007, 02:51 PM I too enjoyed the Christine/Kelly bond. Yes, Hayden really was a big baby sometimes.
browneyes106 03-24-2009, 04:58 PM I liked the relationship between the two of them. Kelly was really mature and wanted her dad to be happy. Christine also understood that Kelly was a major part of Hayden's life.
catlover79 10-17-2009, 02:39 AM I loved the dynamic Hayden had with both Christine and Kelly.
Miss Lisa 06-02-2010, 09:35 PM Agreed. The show would never have been as good if Kelley and Christine fought because then it would have just made all three of them seem like big babies.
catlover79 06-02-2010, 09:56 PM Plus, Kelly was already 18 when she met Christine and her parents had been divorced since she was a baby. So that probably made the relationship much easier for her to accept - and she was able to bond with Christine as an adult.

I have to agree with this. But it is very easy for writers to fall into that hate realtionship with stepparents/children - no matter the age. I also enjoyed their friendship. And I think it helped that Kelly saw Christine as a friend of hers rather than just her dad's finace' and later wife.
catlover79 06-26-2013, 04:35 PM Exactly. Coach was a show that bucked several stereotypes, and this was one of them. I give major kudos to the cast and crew for doing so.
Penny Lane 06-26-2013, 06:49 PM I am still waiting for season 5 and the rest of the series to be released. I wonder what the holdup is? I wasn't too crazy about the later seasons. I hated their move to Florida but there were some funny moments.(Like the UFO episode. hysterical!)Luther and Dauber could be such dorks sometimes!(ALL of the time?) And I didn't care for the episodes about them trying to conceive. That got tiresome for me. But I could see right there that the show would soon be cancelled. Always happens when a new baby or a move to another place happens. Example: LaVerne & Shirley:rolleyes: But I still would like the entire series on dvd. Any news about a release date?:)
Penny Lane 06-26-2013, 06:52 PM Wow! I just noticed how old this thread is! Started 10 years ago in 2003!:D
catlover79 06-26-2013, 08:27 PM I wish they'd at least release Seasons 5 & 6, which were the last years in Minnesota. For me, the show ended when they left for Orlando.

Yea it just was not the same when they moved to Orlando. I only watched it sometimes after the move.
catlover79 06-26-2013, 08:45 PM Yeah, there was no more Judy, no more Mrs. Rizzendough, no more Riley Pringle, etc. I really missed "Minnesota State" and Hayden's cabin - they really provided such a cozy atmosphere.
Bronson 05-24-2014, 10:35 AM I also liked Christine and Kelly's relationship. It was a nice change to see a stepmother and stepdaughter get along.
veggie-tari-jenn 05-29-2014, 11:15 PM I agree they had an awesome relationship it was nice to see...

Yes, I can see how the changes would have been shocking to long time viewers after years of the show in the cabin in Minnesota setting.
biffbronson 03-25-2021, 01:35 PM I did miss Kelly and Judy. Their absence bothered me moreso than the change of setting, but I was glad that Dauber, Luther, and Howard (& wife) were still around.
Overall I liked Katherine Helmond's character Doris, who was obviously inspired by the real-life former owner of the NFL's St. Louis Rams, Georgia Frontiere. She worked well as someone comparable in age to Luther.

I fell for Judy last week in the poker episode, tough but beautiful... as Coach called her, a Georgia Peach... tree.
