I was wondering which one everyone prefers? I never really gotten into to the whole vcd thing since I have a slow computer and I am not really familiar with how to get my vhs stuff onto to vcd. I know how to make a vcd I just don't know how to do it from vhs, heh.

So right now I prefer vhs because to me it's quicker until the day I can afford a top notch computer *sigh*

Definately VCD for me :) I spent most of my life on the computer, and I dont use a VCR anymore

I perfer VHS over VCD all the way. Sometimes VCDs don't look or sound as good like VHS do.

I agree with you, VHS is better than VCD's, because VHS is great and it is neat.

and if im not mistaken isn't it alot cheper to do vhs, or is it about the same?

I'm afraid that before long everything will be vcd and us people who enjoy the old time way's of vhs will be left in the dust :\.

VHS is a lot cheaper and less time consuming. I think there is still a while to go before VHS goes the way of records and LPs, but eventually DVDs will take over the world (until something new comes up) :)

VCD is far cheaper then VHS, the quality of VCD can be worse or better then VHS depending on the equiptment used to make them. These days people should be using SVCD which is far better quality then VHS. Discs are also more convenient, easier and smaller to store and collect, simpler to go to a particular point in a recording Etc. SVCD is the same quality as DVD, and they only cost about 30 cents per hour, far cheaper then VHS, They don't wear out as long as you don't scratch them up, and a good CD burner is far cheaper then a good HiFi VHS deck. Also you only need 1 Cd burner to make copies, VHS requires 2

I have traded VHS tapes for VCDs, but I haven't yet seen one VCD that is as good a quality as a VHS given the same generation of taping. I realize that VCDs won't wear out like a VHS tapes, but in the short run, VHS are better for me. I am willing to trade for VCDs only because the type of shows I prefer are not easy to find.

I prefer vcd, but only ones i make myself or my friend makes cause we hit close to that vhs quality and can get them flawlessly commercial free. esp. my cartoons, I clean those files for hours to get 'em just "so" It's been a lot of fun, too.

I'd love the opportunity to try to change some minds. Anyone is welcome to send me a postage paid envelop with a blank cd(s)/ case in it, and I'll copy a disc or two for you to try out. As long as it doesn't end up costing me anything, I'll throw in the time.

Unfortunately you dont see good ones a lot, because people dont want to dedicate them time, but when you record something straight from the tv or a good first gen sp tape and clean the file good, it comes out pretty right on.

I have seen VCD's ripped from DVD that look as good as the DVD. It all comes down to software, hardware and disc quality.

what equipment do you recommend? I use EO Video (to convert certain files and Tmpeg to convert as well), and Nero to burn, are those any good?

Also how do convert vhs to svcd? isn't there a machine for that? if so what is it called so I can look for it?

Whoever said a CD burner is cheaper than a Hi-Fi VCR?? That's totally false...good VCRs can cost anything from $50-80, I've never seen a CD burner below $100...:o

Those vcr`s you get for $50 are not worth having.

Yeah, 2 or 3 years ago I got my mom a toshiba vcr for Christmas, it was $80 at Sears. I have a 6 head toshiba that does great, so I thought, cool - prices are dropping, right on. One day when I had a bunch of movies I wanted to record, I decided i would use hers to record one. War of The Worlds, recording in SP - i went to get a frame grab from the tape and paused it on a scene so i could get it just so --- the entire screen was white lines. I was so floored - brand new, less than 2 months old, recorded in sp on new tape. I appreciate my sweet baby go deck more and more every day. :)
