It's something Blair says.

Tootie: We are in Troubllle!

Nat: Who wants to be a skinny pencil? I'd rather be a happy magic marker!

Well, when you don't breathe, and lose oxygen, your skin turns blue. So, I always thought that it meant "hold your breath" (which would also keep you from talking), and that would be the result.

Of course, in the 1980's, smurfs were a big deal. Perhaps it had something to do with Papa Smurf and smurfing smurfy smurfs. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

Many people said Turn Blue prior to Facts of Life or the Smurfs. It was just a saying that probably was a wish that you'd hold your breath and suffocate.

In 1963-64 there was a horror movie host in Cleveland named Ghoulardi, who always would say,"Turn Blue!"among other things. You FOL people associate this line only with Blair? To people in my generation in my town this line will be forever linked to Ghoulardi... Ernie Anderson, who became a network announcer for ABC from 1977 to his death in 1997.
