I am not familiar with Thomas Haden church work outside of 'wings' but I tend to find his character too stupid and annoying to be funny.

Lowell is an acquired taste which seems to improve over time.

Many people have an "Aw MAN, what a stupid IDIOT!" attitude towards Lowell, but as I've said before, there ARE pearls of
knowledge rolling around that seemingly empty skull of his....but we really didn't see this until "Wings" had been on for a few seasons!

As for Lowell being "annoying", he CAN be a royal pain in the butt sometimes....especially when he opens his big mouth and spills the beans about something that another character wants kept quiet. At THOSE times he CAN get on your nerves, but the character as a whole can be quite interesting...he's certainly more than just "the dumb mechanic"!

Careful Peter, you could be flogged for such comments!:D

Personally, I didn't care for Lowell at all for about the first 15 or 20 episodes. I've never liked those characters that just couldn't possibily be this stupid, and could only survive in the world of "sitcoms" and are just a plot device for writers.

I think as the show progressed, the writers and Thomas Hayden Church added some endearing and more realistic qualities that made him a much better character. A couple of my favorite "Lowell" episodes are "Mathers of the Heart" when Lowell asks Helen out....that line by Crystal Bernard always makes my life:

Helen: Joe, if my life hasn't gotten pathetic enough, I just got dumped.....by Lowell.:)

And "It's So Nice to have a Mather around the house" when Lowell moves in with Joe and Brian and does all the cooking and cleaning.

But yeah, when he is just too stupid I don't think it works.

I Like Lowell myself, He reminds me of Potsie. :lol:

Hmmm I never thought of that, I was thinking of Edith Bunker from All In the Family, Lowell is a lovable dingbat, as was Edith and Potsie :) :)

Lowell had some funny moments, but overall, he wasn't a favorite of mine. The show did suffer when he left though.

I liked Antonio better as the naive, innocent one of the group.

And as for people in real life dumber than Lowell, I've met quite a few :rolleyes:

I keep forgetting when I hear Lowell talk about Potsie's cousin on "Happy Days" that Crystal Bernard was a cast member on "HD". The audience didn't seem to like her that much.

Don't you know what happened to Lowell after he left Nantucket? He changed his name, went back to school and became an OB/GYN doctor...and drove that Cliff Huxtable right out of business!

Lowell isn't one of ,my favorite characters, and at the beginning I didn't really like him. But by the 4th season, I started to like him, and the show really wasn't the same after he left.

Peter, don't take this the wrong way, but maybe it's cos your a Brit. I know a lot of Americans don't get British humour. I personally like both kinds. I've liked a few British shows. It's easier for you guys to get the American shows over there (I know it depends on the popularity of the show), than it is for us to get the British shows. We fare a bit better now that there's BBC America, but still.

Although, I do feel badly for anyone who does not like Lowell. He is one of the funniest characters I've ever watched on TV. He's freakin' hilarious sometimes. It depends on your point of view I suppose.

Something that I've noticed about Lowell in these earlier episodes that I think was toned down in later seasons....

His very funny "Macho Cowboy" mannerisms...like when he swaggers and starts talking like John Wayne with this "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" attitude.....He's HILARIOUS when he does that!

I also love how Lowell can do and say these things and keep a perfectly straight, deadpan face. In fact, I think that I've seen Thomas Haden Church "break character" and sort of crack up laughing only once.....In "Duet For Cello and Plane", when Fay, Lowell and Roy walk into the hangar after Joe and Helen fight with the fire extinguisher and grease gun, Lowell and Roy are looking around at the mess...and you can tell that they're both really fighting back the laughter and trying not to completely crack up!

OMG, you know somebody else who can do that, Betty White on Golden Girls, most especially when she's telling those very silly(but hilarious)stories about St.Olaf. My sister said that if she ever met Betty, the first question to her would be "How were you able to keep a straight face telling those stories?" Makes you wonder how many 'takes' they had to do.
