View Full Version : DVD Nonsense
phoebe7165 08-14-2003, 01:11 AM I was just looking through some of the other boards and was reading that "My Big Fat Greek Life" and "Andy Ritcher Controls the Universe" are both going to be released on DVD this year. As is said in the movie Princess Bride, IT'S INCONCEIVABLE!!! While I have heard that Andy was pretty good, and I'm sure it was, wasn't this show on less than 2 years? And MBFGL??!!!!Wasn't that on, like, 5 months? Then there's shows like Wings, on for 8 seasons and I haven't heard a peep about it being released. I just don't get it.
pilotguy 08-14-2003, 05:09 AM That's NUTS! While Andy Ritcher's show was not a mainstream hit, it DID (and still DOES) have a loyal cult-like following, so at least I can understand a market for THAT series on DVD (even if it is a relatively small one)....
...but "My Big Fat Greek Life" was an out-and-out FLOP! Both the critics and the public gave thumbs-down on that series...even people who LOVE the "Greek Wedding" movie hated the TV show!
I really think that there is a sizeable market for "Wings" on DVD....I think that it's time I start bugging Columbia House and Paramount Home Video with some of my famous phone calls and e-mails!
Chocoholic 08-14-2003, 10:21 AM I think there's a sizable market for Wings DVD's too. I don't know why they won't release it.
I will never understand the hatred towards Wings :sigh:
losthighway 08-14-2003, 11:41 AM The only theory I can come up with why some shows are getting DVD releases even though they had little success such as "My Big Fat Greek Life" and "Andy Ritcher Controls the Universe" or "The Tick" (which I think had all of 8 or 9 episodes) is that it's another way to try and make money off a product that did very little.
In other words, they can throw the 8 episodes or the 13 episodes onto one disc and produce it relativiely cheaply. If they feel a show has enough of a cult following then maybe they can make some kind of a profit out of it. I thought "Andy Ritchter" was a well done show that never got very good treatment by Fox, so I'm glad they are at least getting the opportunity on DVD.
As for Wings, it may be more work since you are talking about 7+ seasons and over 170 episodes. The powers that be may just not believe that there is a big enough market to support Wings on DVD. They probably don't think they can make enough of a profit and that not enough fans are going to purchase every season, if they released it that way. I still fear (even if they EVER make a single DVD of Wings) it will just be a compilation DVD "Best of Wings" type of thing with maybe 10 episodes. And sure that would be better then nothing, but I want the entire series!
I don't know how much input petitions have, but the Wings petition requesting a DVD needs to grow in order for it to have any impact. As of right now the petition has over 500 signatures. But another favorite show of mine that got crappy treatment by NBC and only lasted one season was "Freaks and Geeks" and the creators of that show put together a petition for it and I read they have over 24,000 signatures requesting it come out on DVD. And it will be! Now how much influence the petition had, I don't know? But 24,000 signatures is the kind of thing to get noticed. 500 wouldn't mean squat to these people.
Adamantium 08-14-2003, 04:09 PM Well, The Tick won in a poll, so they know people want it. "Andy Richter" is my second favorite show, so if that comes out, I will be extremley happy. As for Wings, I will be a 70 year old man watching, and loving my Wings DVDs every weeknight, if they sell it, that is.
And yes, My Big Fat Greek Life coming to DVD ticks me off so bad.
Just for the record:
The Tick (9 episodes)
My Big Fat Greek Life (7 episodes)
Andy Richter ... (19 episodes)
Wings (172 episodes)
Chocoholic 08-14-2003, 04:45 PM I'm happy Andy Richter is coming out, but the Tick and My Big Fat Greek Life? Did people even watch them?
Wings better be released soon.

Well I watched The Tick, but I get your point. I would rather have many other series on DVD before The Tick.

Here's another "DVD/VHS packaging" thought:
Many of the mail-order Columbia House video series ("I Love Lucy", "Dick Van Dyke", etc.) have a new video volume mailed to the subscriber every month. Many of these individual volumes have a common theme or contain episodes which feature a specific character.
So if Columbia House were to package "Wings" in this manner, you might get a video with the best "Joe and Helen" episodes, another with the best "Lowell" episodes (sorry, Peter!), another with the best "Antonio" episodes, etc.
Granted, grouping the shows together by featured character or story theme isn't the BEST way to watch "Wings" episodes, but it WOULD be a marketable option for Columbia House, Paramount or whoever ELSE would be authorized to sell the series on video.
