It shut down my company (thousands of people) on Monday afternoon. We applied a patch from Microsoft and it seems to be okay.

Hi, Ashley.

It seems mostly to affect Windows XP. A box pops up on your screen saying that your PC will shut down in 59 seconds, which is what then happens.

Yep. I'm on XP at home too, and I got it. :crying: I would be online for no longer than two minutes when the 59-second countdown kicked in...I would sometimes get an error about a Generic Win32 thing or whatever it was... Crystal (MsConanOBrien) got it too and she made a thread about it that went for nearly 10 pages...it's somewhere down this page or on the 2nd page. For me, the Generic Win32 thing would come up first (sometimes, it didn't come up all the time) and THEN the RPC shutdown error would come up.

This is what the RPC shutdown looked like...

I first got it at 1:15AM on August 11th AND IT SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. It's not a very happy thing to look at, at 1 in the morning. :(

Mine did it non-stop the other day, but the last two days it hasn't happened to my computer, and I didn't download a patch.

This worm is supposed to when the clocks reach saturday, on each computer send out 50 packets a second to www.windowsupdate.com in an attempt to crash it so people can't get the patches.... Its infected over 300,000 computers... so that would be a lot of packets sent to the windowsupdate.com

Its already Saturday in Russia.. and well I can't get onto windowsupdate.com....

Is it being down related to this? Id assume so

I'm not sure. If it was already Saturday in Russia when it was 1AM CST here, Windowsupdate.com was still up for me. I just checked for updates and the site was running fine... (BTW it said I had no new updates to install)

According to an article I read the site was DOS'ed but microsoft is saying it wasn't from that virus...

AYYYYYY, I just got rid of this virus a few minutes ago! It was annoying enough that I didn't come online for a few days, but it could have been worse. Glad it's finally gone.
