Remember "The Slumber Caper" in which Marcia was unfairly blamed for writing "Mrs. Denton, Hippopotamus" under a picture of George Washington that she drew? The principal made an example of her and made her stay after school for a week. But at the end, it turned out that Marcia's friend Paula wrote the caption, only "she didn't mean any harm", in Marcia's words. At the end of the episode, Carol says that Marcia and Paula explained the whole thing to Mrs. Denton and the principal and that "all is forgiven". Huh? Why didn't Paula get punished for writing that? And I didn't get the whole "she didn't mean any harm" bit. So if Marcia had admitted to writing the caption, but said "I didn't mean any harm", then she would have gotten off?

I've always thought that this was strange. I think the writers just wanted a happy ending, and didn't want to have to deal with Paula getting detention, or being pissed at Marcia for forcing her to confess.

Yea I see what you mean. Even if she didn't mean any harm it still was kind of a mean joke.

From the school's point of view - they had already punished one person for the prank, so they didn't need to punish again.

Marcia - it was her decision how to deal with the prankster. She disinvited the girl that she thought did it, rashly. But when she found the real prankster, and she realized that she hadn't intended to get Marcia into trouble, she didn't feel angry at her, or anyone.

In a way, it was probably wrong for her to be drawing a picture in the first place, even an innocent one.

How could she not mean any harm? The girl wrote a caption saying her teacher is a hippopotamus. Hello? That's an insult.
It isn't funny. When she admitted to writing it, SHE should have been punished.

The whole thing about Paula not meaning any harm was further explained that she meant for only Marcia to see the remark on the drawing, and that it was accidentally left behind for Mrs. Denton to discover.

I understand that. The fact remains that she wrote an unkind remark about someone she should respect. It's no different than if a person sends a note to a friend calling a mutual "friend" a bunch of names, and if the person being talked about accidently found it, shouldn't they be offended? Just because they weren't "supposed" to see it doesn't change the fact that the other person was being unkind.
