View Full Version : How off-screen relationships translated on-screen

WARNING: OVERANALYSIS of HOTC.
At first, the IHP was just a group of kids, and no one had a specific "best friend" in the class. Then, all of a sudden, "friendships" formed.

Even though Eric was "too cool for the nerds," and constantly expressed his dislike of them, he started hanging out with Dennis and Arvid. In real life, this trio of actors are friends.

Darlene and Sarah were two separate entities...until the V-Day ep where they talk about being best friends. On "Intimate Portrait," Robin Givens talks about how she and Kimberly Russell were good friends. I never liked their character relationship, though, since it seemed like they were always fighting over something petty (be it a car or a boy).

I remember seeing candid shots of Khrystyne Haje, Tannis Vallely, and Dan F. hanging out together...this also was on-screen, mostly with Simone hanging out with Janice.

Alan and Simone are in scenes together, but have little interaction with one another. However, we all know Tony took Khrystyne to her prom and are decent friends.

First, all the teen girls hung out together...then it was just Maria, Darlene, and Sarah. Then, it was just Darlene and Sarah. Maria never had a best friend in the class...and I remember Leslie saying that people think she's unapproachable, since she's quiet and shy. I wonder if that affected her relationship with the cast.

And let's not forget Jawaharlal. He never had a friend or group of friends he hung out with in the class, though there were moments that he had improvved convos with Arvid. And this is something pointed out to me. Someone mentioned that Jory seemed "more than thrilled" to be hugging Leslie in the picture on my HOTC page. (Her eyes are looking towards Howard, though.) Since then, I've noticed that Jawaharlal and Maria have many scenes where they're together, interacting, or sitting near one another. In Grease, his character asked hers out. I wonder if Jory had a crush on her. He claimed in an article that he doesn't like mixing professionalism with personal things...but I wonder. But if that's true and being that he's kind of distant from HOTC now, I wonder if he did make any real relationships with the cast.

I wouldn't be surprised if Jory did, I had a huge crush on Maria too! :)

Another thing I forgot. Brian Robbins and Robin Givens dated for a little while...there were a few scenes (like in "I Am The King") where Darlene and Eric were hanging out. And in the "Grease" ep, while the group was getting ready to get on stage, Darlene and Eric sort of hugged each other. Remembering how skeeved out Eric got when Sarah hugged him on "The Russians Are Coming!", it was obvious to me that the two broke out of character in that episode.
