'Wedding' Rings Up $33.4 Million
American Wedding, an R-rated movie with pubescent appeal, opened with $33.4 million at the box office over the weekend to claim the top spot. The take amounted to nearly twice what the original American Pie earned ($18.1 million) in its 1999 debut, but was lower than what American Pie 2 earned ($45.1 million) in 2001. The results seemed to suggest that theater owners are once again relaxing enforcement of R-rated fare for underage moviegoers. A recent national survey of theaters by the Christian Science Monitor concluded that "teens are having little trouble seeing any adult fare they choose" and cited exhibitors who complained that the extra costs of hiring personnel to screen ticket buyers could force them to raise prices.
33.4 million is how much Gigli got for the pie in the face
