'Wedding' Takes the Cake
Universal's American Wedding grabbed the biggest slice of the box-office pie over the weekend, opening with an estimated $34.3 million in ticket sales. Sony's Gigli performed as expected -- that is, it tanked with just $3.8 million, to tie for seventh place with Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo, which is in its 10th week. (Several analysts observed that the failure of Gigli at least was nowhere near the scale of last August's Pluto Nash, starring Eddie Murphy, which opened with just $2.2 million.) Last week's winner, Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, dropped to second place with $20.1 million, while Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, also dropped a notch to third place with $19.1 million. Seabiscuit, which saw a wider release, galloped into fourth place with $17.5 million after opening in fifth position last week. Dave Davis, a film-industry analyst at Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin in Los Angeles, told Bloomberg News that he expects the film to continue charging ahead, perhaps reaching No. 1 by the end of the month. Overall, the box office took in $145 million, 7 percent below the same weekend a year ago.
American Wedding took the cake, while J. Lo and Ben's Gigli got a pie.........in the face that is
