View Full Version : I think of weird things when I'm bored..
Krista2882 08-04-2003, 02:22 PM ok, Wings takes place in Nantucket, Massachusetts. We all know that...
and I don't know if people know this, but people from Massachusetts are known for saying the word "wicked" all the time. As in, "that cow is wicked cute!"
It sort of leaks into Connecticut vocabulary, but not as much. I've been saying it because I picked it up from my cousins who live in Massachusetts.
BUT I've never heard anyone on Wings ever use that word. Wouldn't it have been totally cool if they threw that in the script once in a while, like maybe Joe saying, "Alright Brian, I'm wicked pissed." ? haha that does sound pretty stupid. But the show takes place in Massachusetts! They should have said "wicked" once in a while...
what do you guys think? hehe.

Chocoholic 08-04-2003, 06:44 PM That would have been wicked cool if they used the word "wicked" like we cool Massachusetts people do! :D
I've never heard the term "big sandwich" heard around here though. We usually call the subs or grinders.
Krista2882 08-04-2003, 10:03 PM lol you're from Massachusetts? awesome! Do you say "wicked" a lot? hehe
yeah, I never heard the "big sandwich" term around here. I've always known them as grinders.

Yup! It's a wicked awesome state. And "Wicked" is a wicked cool word :D
Also, especially in the Boston area, we don'trecognize the letter "R'. We pahk ah cah and go into a bah to have some beahs and watch the ballgame. <Did that make much sense? I never liked the Boston accent.>
wingshock 08-05-2003, 08:58 PM Hmmmm.... well, maybe "wicked" isn't really just a Massachusetts thing ... and also, how long have they been saying it?
I remember when I was in college in the late 80s we used to say "wicked," except for I don't remember saying "wicked cute" I just remember using it as an adjective... like, "The paint job on that car is wicked," or "He's got this wicked new stereo system."
Maybe it's more recent slang or younger people slang... remember everbody on Wings was 30 & up.
Love,
Wing<><

yeah, I actually don't know how long they've been using "wicked" in that context in Massachusetts... it's as long as i can remember, but i had never noticed it until someone had pointed it out one day. hehe... and all of my family members from Massachusetts say it.. my uncle and my aunts too, so it's not really a younger people slang...
but yeah- i know what you mean about the other use of "wicked" from the 80's. it was a little different use.
and Snoopy- lol yeah, one of my Aunts has a wicked Boston accent because she's lived there for about 25 years. it's funny.
and I just used the word "wicked" in my "wicked" post and didn't even realize it. yes!
and wingshock- i just realized how i would explain the difference. in the 80's it was used in place of what we use the word "cool" or "awesome" now. like instead of "the paint job on that car is wicked", now people would say "the paint job on that car is awesome" well, I've been told that i'm one of the only people who still says "awesome"... so i don't know. hahaha. but you know what i mean...
and the Massachusetts usage of "wicked" is kind of expressing the abundance of something. like when i said that my aunt has a wicked Boston accent- meaning that she has a really thick Boston accent....
lol hey, I think it's fun discussing the technicalities of the usage of the word "wicked"!! :D

wingshock 08-06-2003, 08:35 AM Oh yeah, I get what you're saying about "wicked" Krista. Cool.
Thank goodness we can all still say "cool"
I used to have a crush on a guy who had moved from Boston when he was a kid. He had lost the "pahk the cah in the yahd" thing. But he still had this cute little way of saying words like "furry" and "hurry."
Like normally we have the R's pretty stressed in there -- like I say FUR-ee. But when he would say it, it would come out more like "fuh-ree." I thought it was so adorable at the time. Oh, wait.... I thought it was wicked adorable.

Chocoholic 08-06-2003, 11:47 AM Another thing that I thought would make a great joke was the mention of Lowell, Massachusetts.
offtopic: There's this restaurant in my town called Antonio's and when I was younger, when my mom and I would drive past it, I'd ask her, "Do you think Antonio is in there?"   I've never been inside it though. I hear it was pretty expensive and the food and service were crappy. In fact, I think it's been shut down, but the building is still there.
