Why did the producers feel the need to turn the cosby show into this new HIP HOP type of show? Was it because Pam and her Ghetto friends joined the show?-LOL

Actually it was only the season 8 opening credits. And if you pay attention Theo would ocassionally talk about rap and stuff in episodes. But since Hip-Hop was becoming more popular at the time I would say they did it just to go with the flow of things.:D

But if the show was never Hip-HOP from the beginning, why all of a sudden make it that type of show?

it seemed like the show started revolving around Pam and her hood rat friends. You was seeing the huxtables, just Pam, charmaine, lance and sly

I think Pam and her friends would of made a good sitcom instead of being on The Cosby Show.

Actually, it was originally intended to be the season 7 opening credits, but legal issues with the backdrop put it back a year. The backdrop was based on the "Dream Street" mural, as I understand it, and the owners of the actual "Dream Street" mural made legal trouble. So they went back to the old theme for a year while (successfully) working something out to use the theme for the following season.

On the original Season 7 theme, by the way, Lisa Bonet and Joseph C. Phillips are on the opening.

I never saw the point of using that mural in the opening credits. Plain stupid.

They were probably just looking for a new setting since they had the same one for 2 years. I think that the mural that is in the backdrop is a real good one and it was a good idea. And they didnt turn it into a hip-hop show. They just brought in Pam and changed the opening credits. That didnt necesarrily change the genre of the show.

It may wasn't intended to be a hip-hop show but that's what it became when Pam and her friends were seen more and more

I think they were trying to give the Cosby show a new feel rather than the old 80's style sitcoms... because at the time... I remember sitcoms having a more urban or a more hipper feel.... look at shows like Fresh Prince,Family Matters,Hangin With Mr Cooper to name a few..

But it wasn't no need to compete with those new shws in the early 90's because the Cosby show was still number one. All they had to do was stay the same. I see no reason why the show couldn't last to 94 or 95.

I think the show ended at a perfect time. All the characters had some type of closure in the 8th season, which was good. And since it ended when it did, you can look back at the show today and it's still a good show. I believe that they would run out of storylines if the show went on, and it wouldn't be as good and it would have a lot of forgettable episodes like Family Matters does. Also, I doubt Lisa Bonet would be back. I don't think they could go on for too long without her.

Yup. Exactly. They do that with most shows, too. I can look back and think that its such an awesome show cuz they new when to stop. It would have been nice to have more episodes but 201 is a real good amount

Pam's friends were NOT hood rats. They were actually smarter than she was. The Cosby Show would NEVER have characters on it that would be considered hood rats, Bill would've never allowed that.

In fact, on the last few weeks before the seventh season began (intended to have the "Hip Hop" opening), Bill Cosby ran some sneak previews of the next season's episodes, and they were described as "the all-new, fresh Cosby Show". So it seems that they were trying to remarket themselves, perhaps...
