... There are characters that are unseen for many seasons and then they make a guest appearance? Like Casey's ex-husband, I never pictured him looking like John Ritter. And then Fay's three dead Georges. I had my own vision of what they looked like. Same with "NewsRadio" when Lisa's boyfriend Stuart made a guest appearance and he was played by Wallace Langham. Totally not who pictured Stuart to be. So anyways, is it mostly dissapointing when that happens. Much like a music video. When I hear a song on the radio, I dayrdream. But it's ruined for me when I see the video.

I know what you mean....back in the 1940's (before I was born), there was a radio show called "Vic and Sade". (I've heard recordings of old broadcasts).

"Vic and Sade" was a low-key sitcom about a rather strange family. The series began as a daily 15-minute comedy-serial, and the actors would sit around talking, with no studio audience present.

Many of the family's conversations were about the things that people in their small town did, and these people had strange, funny-sounding names like Smelly Dave, Cora Bucksaddle, Mr. Gumpox, Bluetooth Johnson, etc.....and the things that these people DID were even weirder than their NAMES! (Kind of like Lowell's Cousin Beevo).

You never actually HEARD these townspeople, but they were always talked about, and after a while you began to feel as if you knew them.

"Vic and Sade" was a successful series for many years in it's daily 15-minute format. However, in 1946 the format was changed to a 30 minute, once-a-week show with a studio audience.

In this new format, the strange townspeople who had previously only been talked about suddenly became actual characters on the show, played by various actors and actresses...and when THAT happened, the show BOMBED and quickly left the air!

Listeners complained that they not only had their own image of what the characters LOOKED like, but what they SOUNDED like as well....and most of the characters just didn't match up with listeners' images when they actually appeared on the program.

In some cases, I think that this may have happened on "Wings"....

I've always been grateful that we never actually saw Norm's wife Vera on "Cheers", and I'm REALLY grateful that we never saw Lowell's cousin Beevo on "Wings"....I can't even BEGIN to imagine what HE would have looked like! :eek:

I can understand that. I have had that happen with novels I read, I picture the characters looking a certain way, but then you read in the book that they have a mustache or blonde hair, etc, etc. I am sometimes disappointed with the covers because they don't portray how the characters are described in the books.

I don't know I didn't picture Casey's husband as some young guys, I did picture him being alot older, but IMO John Ritter fit the role very well. :)

That's like casting somebody as Roy's mother. We heard for years about his mom and you got this vision of her. Then they cast Rose Marie. All those years I never pictured Roy's mom looking like Rose Marie. I was reading recently that the 'Frasier' people are thinking about casting somebody for the role of Maris. For those who never watch Frasier, she was the never-seen(but sometimes in the scene) now ex-wife of Niles. I'm like "NOOOO!, don't do it!! Like Roy's mom, and from how she was described for many years on Frasier, casting an actual person would ruin it. It's like showing what Wilson's whole face looked like on Home Improvement. I didn't watch that show all the time but I knew that was the running gag.:) ;) :p :cool:

When they showed Fay's 3 Georges, it was weird, because I didn't picture any of them looking like that. It didn't bug me all that much, but it was just weird.
Same thing as when I heard that John Ritter played Casey's husband Stuart (before I saw the episode), I thought that was weird, because I didn't picture Stuart looking anything like John Ritter. lol.

and yeah, the same thing happens with music videos. If I've never seen what a certain band or singer looks like, and then I see the music video, it's so weird to see what these people actually look like, because I had a whole different image in my head.

Now that you mention it, Roy DID give us a different mental image of Mom Biggins through the years.....more like a small, wiry woman. He would always talk about grabbing something from his mother's "bony little fingers", etc.

As great as she was in the role of Roy's mom (and she WAS great), through the years I was picturing a smaller woman...more like Estelle Getty as Sophia on "The Golden Girls"....but again, Rose-Marie was STILL wonderful in the part!

As for Stuart Davenport, John Ritter did a fine job...but someone here mentioned that they pictured Stuart as an older, more professional-looking man, and I did too. From Casey's earlier descriptions of him, I was picturing someone more like Corbin Bernsen ("Arnie Becker" on "L.A. Law")...but that was just my personal image of him.
