I hate to break this to you, but the James Evans character was a JERK more often than not. No offense to John Amos, but his character on Good Times was a loud mouth that had no clue.

His charcter was like everyone's else, he had bad moods, and good moods. He was loud all the time, he just was a man who didn't take NO ( HIT)

Please, Cliff Huxtable was GOOFY. I neer saw enough of Ward. James was just a hard working father who was the best for his family. All fathers get mad

Think again Solomon Dynomite became a popular catchphrase of the 70's. It was on T shirts, they made a JJ doll. The only thing John Amos got was a pink slip. LOL

John Amos stayed in the acting business and continued to be a success. Amos has a new sitcom coming out this fall. The only thing jimmie does is go on STAR DATES AND GET REJECTED

Whether he's still acting or not, Jimmy was still the star of Good Times and even though you'd hate to admit that, deep down you know it's true.

Yo B.D. Isn't the whole uniqeness about human beings our differences. Why should everyone be compared to everyone? If you're not like someone then you shouldn't be accepted? James Evans was unique because he was unlike any tv father you ever seen. He's still working. Where can you find JJ today? That tells me a lot about the depth behind ones acting ability. John Amos is still going strong while Jimmie Walker lasted as long as Good Times did. So much for depth.:cool:

First of all, I think Sitcom and his followers are having some difficulty separating the characters from the actors themselves. I really don't know that much about John Amos or Jimmie Walker personally, but as far as their characters on Good Times, I think the J.J. character was much more entertaining than James and eventually came to have a lot of depth.

There were problems with the James Evans character. He was obviously a good man, but he came off as also looking rather ignorant in the show (And please, don't get bent out of shape. I'm talking about JAMES EVANS, NOT JOHN AMOS. There is a difference, you know). James didn't really have much to offer in a family problem except yelling, hitting, and flying off the handle.

While some sitcom fathers, like Andy Taylor, held spanking as a last resort, James seemed like he was just looking for an excuse to beat the kids. He often threatened Michael with a strapping for the slightest infraction of the rules.

He was also verbally abusive to J.J. numerous times. He once told J.J. that when trouble broke out he could do the three things he did best: "Yell for help, hide in the corner, and shake 'till I get here." While funny, it's not exactly father of the year. Granted, J.J. was often afraid, but he did once take a bullet for James during a street confrontation. In a rare moment of softness, James kissed J.J. and thanked him for saving his life. However, I didn't hear James make any apologies for his past insults.

Even Florida said that he yelled at the kids too much in the episode where she attended school. James' chauvinistic beliefs also came out in that episode.

They also seemed like they couldn't decide how honest they wanted to make James' character. In some episodes he was "honest James" and in other ones, Florida had to talk James out of some dishonest ideas. With such mixed messages, it's probably no wonder that J.J. didn't mind bending the rules to try getting ahead.

In short, I think James' character was a flawed character who saw life in a very concrete manner with little shades of gray. Having said that, I do think it was very sad when James died and there were episodes with James that moved me such as the reunion with his own father. However, let's face the facts, the James character wasn't all that, sometimes he acted like he wasn't even all there. LOL

Thank you Gee Bee. Who the hell cares what Jimmy Walker is doing now, the fact is JJ was the star of Good Times.
